Man, i don't know how many times I played FF6 before I relalized I could give Gogo other people's special attacks. Then I was like, MUAHAHAHAHA.

Anyway, i think my party was Terra, Edgar, Sabin, and Locke.

Also, what's the Gau ability with Charm? I am just at the point where I got Gau and I'm wandering around the veldt looking for dudes to leap.

Nightshade, an enemy in Owzer's House in the World of Ruin. At this point you probably have Gau's best rage: Stray Cat for Cat Scratch, a random 1k+ damage attack. I don't know of any other great rages in the World of Balance.
The Templar has Fire 2, which is pretty good right from the get-go.

Here's what I learned:

"Stray Cat is an early Rage you'll likely find useful throughout the game (early in the game, it's just insanely powerful, later you can combine it with the Merit Award for numerous effects including massive MT damage).

Also useful in the first half of the game are Aspik (Giga Volt), Anguiform (Aqua Rake), Marshal (Wind Slash), ChickenLip (Quake), Chimera (Aqua Rake, better than Anguiform but not available till a little later, and several others (check a Rage guide, preferably Djibriel's).

For the second half of the game, Stray Cat will still come in handy, but you'll want some updated Rages also. Good ones include SrBehemoth/Brontaur (Fire 3, Brontaur is better but is in the last dungeon), Woolly (Ice 3 and absorbs all but Fire and Pearl), Magic Urn (Cure 3, absorbs all elements and blocks all statuses, Karkass/Punisher (Bolt 3, Karkass has Death Protection but is Undead, while Punisher has inherent Haste), and Tyranosaur (Meteo). Quite a few others are useful also; once again, use a Rage guide."

Also, Charm is apparently like Muddle, but unblockable, even by bosses.
My party was always Edgar (my fav character, always on point), Sabin, Celes and then a random fourth member. Usually Cyan or Locke.
Edgar and Sabin (because I needed someone to equip Sprint Shoes) was my final party.

I may have had just Edgar for Kefka, but I can't recall. It was either just him or the brothers Figaro.

I fought a lot of brontosaurs la~
i never beat the game (world of ruin is mad boring) but i beat world of balance (which should have been the end of the game!) with Locke, Mog, Shadow, and Edgar

Cyan is the coolest but i had heard enough "he sucks actually" and am enough of an aspie that i never used him

same goes for Sabin

i don't remember any of the other characters except Setzer because his name is dumb and Celes because of that stupid fishing shit

I find it rather telling that despite Final Fantasy 6 having a huge number of glitches - chief among them that many of the stats in the game either aren't used for what they should be or just plain don't work at all - that it's still regarded as either best or second best in the entire series.

I think the reason for this is multi pronged - Fantastic hand-drawn graphics, well paced story, music, and the fun of customizing your characters.

Also, goin' thru the whole game with cool shades.
iirc FF6 stats do work except Evade (and consequently Blind is just Cool Shades Time), it's just that stat gains mean a fraction compared to level gains for damage output. +1 Vigor is trivial compared to +1 Level.
Rad Sunglasses rock.

Anywho, I can't find the damn Stray Cat in the Veldt! Curses!

Has anyone ever tried to Paint an invisible enemy with Relm?

Also also, Setzer with Fixed Dice rocks.
Gau should start with Stray Cat, double check if you have it already because I don't think you can find Stray Cats in the wild yet.

*edit*
Stray Cats are "in the North East map" and have 156 HP so you probably just didn't encounter one. Still, Gau should start with Stray Cat, else I wouldn't worry too much about it. The game is very anti-Gau for a while, you can always go back to pick up more Rages when you get Mog's water dance.

FF6's stat system is f.u.b.a.r.

I don't think level should determine things as fundamental as raw damage. It is overly streamlined.

It's useful if you want meaningful HP progression while having rather static stats, which is why FF games use level in their calculations.

STR usually only increases one point at a time, if at all, while HP is increased based on an exponential curve. If damage was STR * 2 - VIT with that HP growth, battles would drag on unless enemies had very uneven stats compared to the party. Having it also based on level means that you can say "at level 50, enemies should have X HP because the party will have, on average, Y STR." The player can alter this with ATK/MATK/PDEF/MDEF/whatever, while still having their simple and small main attribute numbers. Notice how FF stats rarely breach 99 until FFXIII!
I used Sabin, Cyan, Shadow and Edgar/Setzer.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for cool vs. functional.
in the context of final fantasy VI everyone is functional really, it's worthwhile just picking the guys you like

This is true.

The last time I played through it though, I didn't equip espers on people who had no business using magic. At least that left one mage per party in Kefkaville.

that was my favorite part because it was like "check out these rad fucking dudes smash a train, bet you wish you could use them for real"

like i said though, despite the fact that they're probably not even that bad, i am an asschop about rpg stats

(actually my favorite part is when i spent an hour grinding at that place where you can just hold down the A button and then "oh lol no espers = shit stats")
Mog was the best because he could equip the Snow Muffler (255 defense!) and wasn't a complete pussy to boot! Mog was level 80 for me and Edgar was level 99. Both had all the magics. LIFE3LIFE3LIFE3 CAN'T STOP THE PAIN TRAIN!!!
