THE SCREENSHOT TOPIC RETURNS

Yeah, mun! I'd totally love to see a finished version of the RTP in that style, Joseph! It's so... stylish! And I'm not usually a big fan of the "chibi" look.
Can I hop on this bandwagon too? It seems quite comfy!
But yes, that has want pasted all over it, JosephSeraph. I'm sure people would drool to get this.

@JosephSeraph: Looks amazing!! I really hope you finish it. If you don't, you should at least turn it into a community effort! That character style is such a great take on those 2k3 characters.
^ looks complicated... And interesting :) i've been having itch for anything old-school lately and that looks exactly the kind of stuff i'd like to get into. Where are the graphics from?
Portraits are from old school infinity engine games (NWN, Baldur's Gate, etc.), most of the rest is from PV Games
@Kaelan
Woah, looks very Duungeons&Dragons-y Xd cool stuff.
I uploaded the Alice game presentation, we can finally introduce it on rmn. ^^
Here's 2 of the screenshots. : )
I hope some will get to play it at some point. ^^

The windows and in-game graphics are cute as balls, but...uh, those um... portraits are kinda... horrifying... >.<;;;
I think it's the eyes. And how big the heads are in comparison to the other parts of the faces. Especially the red head. Dear lord, that is distracting as all hell and kinda frightening. Even if they're supposed to be chibi-style... they scare me. ;.;

@Liberty
Aww, don't you love scary things? XD Because we do~! <3
Especially with Alice in Wonderland type of setting. ^^
In fact we actually had a more classic bishoujo manga approach on the character design at first,
with normal young girl anatomy and face etc, but, did not like it ; P.
( It was drawn by a very talented, experienced artist, too - but just didn't fit the game's weirdness. )
The current avatars / facesets come from an artist that usually does more surrealist watercolor works with really curious shapes and colors.
Thanks for the compliment on the spritework tho.

The part that I'm finding really distracting isn't the art style in specific, but like Liberty said, the location and spacing of the facial features. If you look at the head as a whole, and compare the face (the lower half of the head) to the top of the head, the face looks really smushed and out of proportion, giving them a very alien look.
Compare the location of just the eyes in this chibi picture and I think you'll see the difference. They've been placed more in line with the actual structure of a human face.

I'm no artistic expert, especially in drawing faces, (mine really aren't very good XD) but I think that's the source of the offputting nature.

Hehe~ nobody would argue I suppose. ^^ (cutesy sample pics btw.)
But there is no issue here - as you probably have read by now, the surreal- and alien look was exactly what we were looking for in this game ; ) hence the desicion.
Our previous picture was similar like your sample, but we had to reject it XD

Gahhh, thanks guys, right now I'm adjusting all the tilesets into a single one -- partly because I'm putting tiles in events, too -- but I'm so bad when it comes to organizing them! =A="
Also, @unity and @liberty, that style is a thing, you know? Quite inspired by the 70-80's, I'd say.It's just a liiiiiittle bit more exxagerated than usual, but 70's manga had facial features pretty much like this. And I also really, really like the deformed, surreal vibe this brings up. I'd say to keep it up! Love the screens so far.
I suppose it'll be easier to perceive the effect of the portraits in game (in-setting) hahah :D
*back to my lame attempt of organizing stuff*

@NebelSoft: If it's not to much trouble to ask, how do you go about finding artists for your project? I'm curious, because I'm having to do the same thing :3

Ah,.. well just try a simple and common creativity platform like deviantart.
Once you hang out there, you stumble across very professional and experienced artists from time to time - you check their profiles and portfolio, see if they are open for commission, and if their price level is in the range of what you are willing to invest / pay for good art. : )
Then you compare art styles / artist's experience levels* and prices until you think you found the right artist and just sent him a friendly note, with some information on your project.
As far as I can tell, artists from Thailand often have a nice skill / price rate - ( because of the currency exchange rate ) And many Thai artists have a great feel for style / colors and high quality illustration art. But that might just be my imagination. ^^
A fair price I personally can afford to invest for a character-illustration (maybe half body, or cute full body) would be around 30 USD$. (Not that I'm greedy, I'm just not too wealthy myself ^^; )
Anyway, just be honest, tell them that it's for a game and if it's commercial or non-commercial. : )
* this is a bit of a tricky one - even if an artist has brilliant art in their gallery, doesn't always mean they can draw what you want exactly how you envisioned it, especially if they are inexperienced - or - what you request is not what they are used to draw... So it might be a good idea to check if they already have a commission in their commission folder (or wherever) that already looks very similar to what you want.
Thanks for the advice! ^_^ That's very helpful!
I'm pretty new at hiring outside help, (and I'll prolly only be able to afford it once a year or so if I save up) but I feel like I've hit a wall with my own art, so it's a big help.

...or you can just ask in a forum or write a blog entry for your deviant.art/tumblr account if you got a nice number of followers already. Chances are you could be as lucky as me and get an artist for free that is just trying to get better and gain a few more fans. I wouldn't be able to afford more than one picture since I'm a girl that still goes to school, after all.:)
