THE FEATURED GAME THREAD

Posts

Well Pom certainly is a divisive topic. I see Pom as a great short game with custom graphics and a cool storyline. Archeia has a point that it might be too short for a Featured Game, but since when does a game need to be long to be featured? I've played a lot of <1hr games that are way better than 30+ hour-long epics. Length shouldn't matter in my opinion, and neither should depth of mechanics. It's all about the experience, I say.

But I still believe Pom shouldn't be featured. The reason for this is simply because everyone already knows about Pom. People being directed to this site to download Pom should already have a URL, and all regulars of this site already know where to get it. The Featured spot should highlight games that deserve a bit more spotlight than they currently do. The only reason I could see to give Pom featured as of present is to award it with an "honorary" thing. Being featured probably won't even increase its download count by that much.

So yeah, Suzy and freedom needs exposure, Rust and Blood needs exposure, Labyrinthine Dreams needs exposure. They all have <1000 downloads (last time I checked), but glowing reviews and talk from those that have played it. I'd suggest you considering featuring one of them.
I actually liked God of Crawling Eyes. That one was surprisingly good.

I did play most of our featured games and pom isn't close to them gameplay mechanics wise...

yeah, again, I'm not putting pom forward as a potential featured game. reading the recent posts in this topic, I got the feeling that it had sort of soured people toward games of a similar style, and figured I'd sing their praises in comparison to more typical rpg maker stuff. I might have misread the atmosphere completely, in which case... my bad!
So yeah, I vote Vorlorn.

I'd vote Homework Salesman, but it's only part 1 of 4. Do we feature incomplete episodic games?

Hey could we just do a poll on what game was featured next?
I'd much rather people give reasons for their recommendations. it's much more interesting when it's a dialogue rather than just numbers in a box.

Very much this. I feel like featured games are representing the best this community has to offer, and going by a number of votes as oppose to fully elaborated opinions is kind of unreliable. Not to mention the creator of their featured games could possibly vote on their own games, which can skew results.
So like I said, I pocketed Pom for later, and SRW and STTB for later too. I went with Homework Salesman because the game is cool looking. When it is completed later (all 4 episodes) I will make a blurb about it on the frontpage. I'll probably do Pom on it's 1 year anniversary. Enelysion will probably be a hidden gem soon.

but... can someone explain to me why you guys seem keen on Very Pink Game and against Pom? They seem very much like the same kind of game to me: short, cutesy, shallow gameplay, entertaining story... except that Pom has a point to the game. (and for the record "it's too popular!" is a pretty dumb reason NOT to feature a game)

Normally I'd agree, but it's just such an extreme case, and the game itself isn't THAT fantastic. I can't speak for Very Pink Game because I don't know anything about it. At least with Pom I saw the LP, so I have some idea of its merits.

Welp, so what exactly is the purpose of Featured Games? Just because the game isn't that fantastic does not mean it can't be featured (for the record, I don't like the gameplay of Pom either). From what I see of the posts here, I don't think there are actually any solid reasons why Pom shouldn't be featured.

There needs to be a clear definition of what "Featured Games" are exactly. And that definition will have to boil down to Kentona and his team.

EDIT: @Nessiah, Well, your reasons are legit, but since kentona has already defined the criteria for featured games, and "cool" is pretty subjective, but a majority of people do find Pom cool. Even if the gameplay is weak, there are many aspects that make this game so popular. And yes, I know that gameplay is a core element of a game, but given the good reviews and the sheer popularity of Pom, I dare say that nowadays, it isn't just about the gameplay anymore, really.

Besides, it's okay once in a while to feature joke games, provided the joke games are clearly notable. It isn't like joke games are featured every month.
For gods sake will you drop it with Pom. It's painful to watch everyone dancing around the subject and hiding their real thoughts.
the criteria for featured game is as follows:

1. is complete
2. hasn't been featured yet
3. is cool

The third point can be loosely interpreted. There honestly isn't much more to it than that!

it's also painful watching people play mentalist so like

maybe say what you wanna say instead of being oh so canny and vague and beyond it all tia

or let it die altogether because I dunno about people hiding their thoughts but damned if they're not hugely and inordinately angry about something that does not warrant that kind of curmudge

e: also I'd like to nominate Cool Spot for the Sega Genesis as our next featured game

A legitimate reason Pom shouldn't be featured? Okay. The gameplay is very, very weak. It consists almost entirely of fetch quests (lol) and requires no thought or effort to complete. The "battles" are only such in the strictest sense of the word, as the most strategy they ever require is 'take no action'. Otherwise, the game is well written, has a decent plot, and a cutesy art style. That's my mini-review. It fits better into the visual novel category than anything else.

Even though you guys are arguing about Pom, I wanted to thank you guys for the feature on HWS! We've both been pretty inactive lately but thank you guys anyway!

WHAT? I thought my posts about POM was as legit as it can get especially about gameplay.

And congrats to StarCadets and HWS~

men•tal•ist (ˈmɛn tl ɪst)

n.
1. a person who believes in or advocates mentalism.
2. a mind reader or fortune-teller.

What?

Anyway, sure I'll be less vague. I think the reason nobody is bashing the game too hard is because they don't want to be seen as jealous.
If the game didn't have the amount of downloads it had due to it getting LP'd by pewpewpie or whatever I am 100% certain it would not even be up for discussion on getting featured.

Personally I think the humor is shit (personal opinion), the gameplay is boring and the game deserves maybe an average score (2.5).
There are some good points, like the graphics, a pretty unique style and a somewhat fresh/original story. It's good for someones first game, but nowhere close to most of the games that got featured in the past.
