THE "HERE'S AN IDEA" THREAD

Enker that is a pretty cool idea. We would have to lay a pretty good game design foundation to make it all work. I'd be interested in helping with that.
...Maybe we could incorporate a FF5 class system that a lot of people here seem to really like...

What I thought was a really awesome twist on a community game, was what some folks in #rm2kanime did.
Each participant makes a world and a special character class given in the world. You are able to use the different classes you receive in other worlds you play.
In essence, it was an RPG-equivalent of Mega Man. Too bad that slacker Sei never released it.

It's something I'd deffinatly be up for working on (alongside my own long-time love Shadow's Reach). We could have a basic test of the home setting and character creation up by then end of the week with a tutorial dungeon if I really put my mind to it. Contact me if you want to be involved - PM me here or email me and we'll do some deffinate work on a trial version.
Anybody want to produce some custom graphics or chipsets for it? What classes do people enjoy playing most? I have about 10 in my head but would like to implement people's favourites.

I have roughly 65 classes in mind.
End of the week might be pushing it in terms of getting something going. But here are the reasons why like your idea:
1. It's episodic
2. It has classes
3. Fuck storylines.
If you are serious about starting up a community project, make a new post proposing it and ask for people to sign up. If there is enough interest perhaps we can get something going.

I think it should be made in RPG Maker VX. RM2k is archaic.
I have another idea similiar and it involves the community in a small way though. You ever played Lax Team to the Rescue it had all people from the forum log in and save this one dude who must of been the lead programmer. We can have something like Kentona gets kidnapped by an evil dude and now it's time for the players of this forum to rise up and save Kentona before it's to late. To eb in the game the community could have to submit their own sprites of themselves for the game and the names would simply be our usernames on here like
NoblemanNick
Weapon: Twin Swords
Special Ability: Dance of the 1000 Swords
or
WIP
Weapon: Unknown
Special Ability: Onto the Future(Rm2K programs starts falling down from the sky and destroying the enemy while breaking themselves.)

RMVX killed Generica.
hey, i thought it was the lack of participation that killed it.
I'll open up a thread for the proposed idea - though it WILL be something in RPG Maker 2000, I warn you all ;) my love lies with it.
I can see "submit a class" being this:
My hero can wield one-handed swords that hit like trucks. He can wear the heaviest armor. He can cast healing spells. He can cast all-hitting nukes. He has an ability that refills his HP/MP too 100% and it costs 10 MP. His ultimate sword is the dragon sword, which is far more powerful than any 2-handed sword in the game. His ultimate armor is the dragon armor, which reflects all magic, Gives 500 XP per map step, and reduces fine lines of the human player by 25%, giving that youthful, healthy look. Playing this class expands your voter base to working-class whites and evangelicals.
ok everything i just said was said in jest. Just in case anyone somehow didn't pick that up yet. BUT there's an element of truth in all jokes. Is he joking or isn't he?

A game like SaGa Frontier, with multiple characters, the ability to freely roam areas and regions, and tons of secrets, quests, characters, and side-quests.
I'd kill for a game like this.

Uhm any US-developed RPG.
Also check out the rest of the SaGa series!

Of course I know Western RPGs have the same deal as SaGa, but I'm just going to say this up front; as much flak that jRPGs feel, I have always enjoyed their setting, atmosphere and world far more than I have most Western RPG's. If someone would combine the feel of SaGa with an actual competent version of what SaGa tries to bring to the table (but usually fails at), I'd more than happy.

That's because Western RPGs are really boring.

But seriously.
Well I love a lot of Western RPGs but you really have to admit that even the best ones are sort of boring and are only fun because of the thrill of exploration. There's really no focus whatsoever to the actual game design in most of them (especially Elder Scrolls) so you're left to wander around and find your own fun. The more linear ones like Neverwinter Nights are always kind of bland and uninspired and even though D&D rules rock so you can have a lot of fun levelling up and slaying orcs you really can't compare the design of dungeons in Oblivion or Mass Effect to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest.
I know that pretty much all of my friends would fall asleep playing Planescape Torment. A lot of reading in that game. :(
That's the beauty of Morrowind, and to a lesser extent, Oblivion. The gameplay is player-driven. I think finally learning everything about the main storyline of the original Morrowind was one of the most awesome video game experiences I've had. It really is an extremely well thought-out storyline. The last segment of the main quest, where you finally meet Vivec, learn the truth about everything, and begin the Red Mountain campaign still sends chills down my spine.
Of course, a much broader base of people are good at enjoying games that are completely linear. And yes Darken, a LOT of people are functionally illiterate. A shame too, since so many fascinating things can be in the text of RPGs.
