Crazy idea: how about restoring signatures to help members promote their own stuff, their own way? I'd be much more tempted to click on a link to, say, a project page in my immediate sight than visit the profile of a member who for some reason or the other I don't particularly care about.

ask yourselves whether you want to be part of a community where pics of a lion licking its own balls and dog sniffing the crotch of a pair of jeans are offensive images
This question is really weird

I would like this if people who posted like crazy would not make this look like spam.
"I post 10 times as much as the average user so I get all so much more exposure"
Some people see it as a plus for advertising. I just see it as ENOUGH of seeing this game already!
Legend of Philosopher's Stone, yes you.
*Wishing I did not respond to that in this thread. Too off topic.

THIS IS THE BEST IDEA I HAVE HEARD OF IN YEARS!
lol, seriously. Then everyone can promote their projects as they post! People who don't have their games looked a Illustrious, will get some attention.
Sigs for advertising is just bad. Do you know how much exposure you get from the forum minority? Who would go to the forums to look for games... if we're doing that then there is a problem with the main website.
That's not the problem Darken. I don't think too many people come to the Forums for games. It is just it would give people who are "shadowed" by other people's amazing games can get a chance to have theirs looked at. :|
Not everyone browses the game pages you know.

author=IllustriousI doubt getting word of their projects out (on the forums I mean) would be the first thing on most forumers' minds, but even if that were the case, getting everyone posting this way could help exhibit a more vibrant community? And if posting ever went that out-of-hand, I'm sure moderators would be able to deal with it.

Giving users the option to turn off signatures would be a good idea too.
author=DarkenI'm not saying such advertising should be a replacement for the games section, just a supplement!

If you are interested in what a forum member has done you can click on his name and go to the games. This feature will benefit like 10 people who only go to the forums lol. We have been over this before, if you're exclusively going to the forums, you're using the site wrong.
Yet people with amazing games can also advertise here. Sigs do not directly fix the problem. Like is that all you can think of "bring back forum sigs"??? Seriously?

There's no single solution to whatever problems RMN faces, but every little helps. How hard is this to understand?

I am sorry Darken. What is your solution?

Forum sigs accomplish NOTHING... is what I'm trying to get at. I am desperately trying to think of people who would actually benefit from this.

Get rid of you.
a design issue several staff members and the site creator agreed was problematic and discouraging to those wishing to contribute thoughtful content, but 1+year later is still mysteriously unresolved.
Let me clear up the mystery.
-WIPs philosophy for the site is that no one's opinion is more important than any other's. This is evident in the front page design, since 90% of the content is automatically fed. (In fact, the only real portion that is not - the featured game - WIP wants to remove. I intervened and argued for its continued existence. Maybe I should have let him fulfill his true vision? too late now.).
-Anywho, WIP ties of RMN and resigns. Karsuman is in charge. (I was a staff member at this time)
-Ankylo is chased out of town, and we are truly fucked, as he was the last person who knew how to manage the servers and code in python/django
-I create a "secret" group of people who I try to get to spur content creation and organize events and crap. (remember? I asked you, too)
-eventually, after a frustrating few months of lack of engagement from the rest of the staff I made some wholesale changes. (Remember? You mocked me for this) I undo my changes and I resign.
-WIP comes back. Thoroughly disgusted with the poisonous atmosphere he sees here he plans to kibosh the site.
-holbert intervenes and wrests control of the site back from WIP. Luckily he is also able to convince ankylo to come back and manage servers and set up a new SVN repo. I come back too.
-even though I don't know python, I learn it and began working on bug fixes with ankylo. RMN4's design begins in earnest. (I have sunk probably 10-30 hours a week into this since April, but apparently that's not enough??). We settle on a new frontpage design (designed by geodude :O!!)
-we are forced to move to a new server host (our sweet deal finally ends). That takes up about a month of time to do.
-meanwhile, shitstorm after shitstorm afflicts the forums (especially surrounding that one aspect of the frontpage that is NOT auto-fed - the featured game. WIP' philosophy doesn't sound so bad now! lol). cool members like creation and anaryu and catmitts leave.
So yeah, it has been a tumultuous year to say the least. Sorry that we weren't able to revamp the site to your satisfaction in that time. Maybe it's time to move on? idk

People who exclusively use the forum (who, yes, are "using the site wrong"). Maybe this would get them more interested in game development, or better yet, playing? And yes, I really think they exist. If you don't we're going to have to agree to disagree, old boy
Well, I guess some people's minds compulsively seek for flaws and possibility of changes in everything, which is not a bad thing per se, but it creates the illusion of unsatisfaction. I like this site a lot, and it gives me chills every time someone suggests something big and potentially disastrous like this "Void" thing. I really like this idea of auto-feeds on the main page. It may not be perfect, it may have holes, but it's impartial, and it works. The structure and dynamics of RMN are awesome and I love it, and the real indicators of the site's quality are the games we post and the ways in which we support people who makes games.
So, if anything, what can be improved is the userbase. I think it's sad, but not unfair, that people who contributed with stuff (like YDS and tardis) are leaving, but their loss is far from having a huge impact in RMN. People talk about DRAMA, and how DRAMA ruins RMN, but I don't see it. It's just normal social forum dynamics, which don't (or at least shouldn't) have a significant impact on the site itself. Everything seems to be fine. Site is running great with a new user-supported server, people are still making stuff, playing stuff, helping others, and that's what it matters. I agree with Mog, we should be happy. And I mostly agree with Darken... all this discussion just makes me want to break it down to what matters:
Make games
Play games
Write stuff (reviews, articles)
Help people
If anyone is not doing that enough, he should be the last one complaining.
