WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT? (GAME DEVELOPMENT EDITION)

Posts

djbeardo, have you been there before? I'd like to think that creative scenes are usually pretty supportive and encouraging towards each other. So give it a try! Sounds like a cool event.

So lately I've been pretty inactive with RPG maker.. I have this dark sadistic dungeon crawler in the making, but I was thinking of maybe starting another project with a silly and light-hearted feel. You know, to balance each other out. The problem I have at the moment, that's slowing me down, is that my working laptop is an Apple product and I have to switch to my old PC every time I want to actually do some game making. Pretty troublesome.

Today, I completely-by-accident stumbled onto a bug that required the following steps to trigger: use an ability with each character, open a specific chest, then challenge a specific NPC to a game of cards, and it would cause the game to freeze. I could repeat it, but leaving out any of the steps wouldn't trigger the behavior. By some miracle (and copious debug statements), I figured out a variable was being Rube Goldberged into a wrong value, so I managed to implement a fix after tussling with it for a couple hours.

So, what I'm thinking about is: I sure wish they sold alcohol on Sundays here.

Only the game itself matters.

While this is true, unfortunately it will not prevent people from perpetuating the stigma, even people who actually use said engines :/

You in Texas? haha

Well, we can't buy liquor at least on Sunday, which kinda sucks because it's the only thing I drink.

I'm thinking about how pleased I am with the fast progress of one of my current (commercial, yay!) projects. RMN has been helpful, also I'm working with my brother to collaborate, so just good fun regardless.

So, I joined two jams on itch.io and one of them has me doing a sci-fi interpretation of a non-sci-fi story. So I'm setting The Last Unicorn as a space opera. They actually go together surprisingly well.

Are you going to post the game you make here? I would play that.

FINALLY it seems like my little Breakout clone is coming together smoothly after the headaches of being a newb learning a new engine (and things breaking). I even figured out how to make the ball speed up with every brick hit, just like in the original game. I feel so relieved.

I've been thinking about a different approach to how I make games. I'm still working the kinks out of the process, but I'm kinda liking this new method. It involves quite a few changes to my usual method of writing the story first, then figuring out how to tell it through gameplay.

It's a long post, so I'm putting it in hide tags since I don't want people to scroll like a maniac, but check it out and tell me what you think:

I'm going to try changing my approach to games as well, mostly because my life situation is changing soon and I'm going to have a lot less time for game make.

Right now, I want to get most, if not all of the game's remaining visuals out of the way (I have about 70%-80% of them already). That way, I'll have the building blocks in place to put the rest of the game together and it will be less of a hassle to assemble the game during the fewer instances that I can do so.

I'm just really glad I got as much done as I did before all of this; the project is roughly 50% done and most of the tedious busy work is out of the way so the rest of it will likely be less difficult. A lot of what is left to do is largely eventing. Had I started a project of this size now, I would probably never finish it.

Ahh, that's brilliant! Why didn't I think of this? Now I can have all the perfect fantasy town/dungeon names and background I need when I make a dungeons and don't know how to have them be cohesive in the story! Absolutely amazing, although I do have to do a little editing. Here, lemme demonstrate:

Ban Nab Bnbanhh ville
This coastal village has been invaded by their rival tribe CnConhh. The CnConhh plan to steal all the Ban Nab fruit for their own diabolical and economic purposes. The Fuvghjkjgh Order has recruited you to stop them!

Kmn-Yhujnm ,Et.Al;L'Opital
A foreign hospital is located next to the Kmn-Yhujnm depths. Undead have been rising and plan to take over the hospital, invading through the basement. Turns out the basement is 70 floors on the side of the cliff nearest the depths, and the Fuvghjkjgh Order requires your aid to clear out the zombie invasion to create a series of Bottle Factories.

Rtytuiui'Opujghftrkll;kill Mountain
The ancient clanhome of Rtytuiui'Opujghftrkll;kill resides in the Kmn-Yhujnm mountain range. Secluded from the rest of the world, they were allowed to tap into the dark magics and begin performing blood rituals with sheep. A member of the Fuvghjkjgh Order, Caz, demands you infiltrate their clanhome to put a stop to this.
Waiting for one of my testers to finish one of my games, then I'll release it. In the meantime, I'm already beginning work on another game. I'm going to make the jump from Ace to MV.

Now I have to figure out, in my new project, how to make a game still beatable without the use of recovery/miraculous-pool-of-healing areas. So there's the whole item focus aspect.

The game has 8 (initially) playable characters. There's also going to be some choices that result in character death, and I'm trying to come up with clever ways to make that have ramifications both inside and outside of battle.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Well, being featured last month caused Last King of Hyrule to get 160 downloads and 0 comments. Meanwhile my MUD got 8 new players last month, most of whom talk on general chat constantly about the game. Guess which of those two situations makes me excited and energized to keep improving the game?

Well, the stats should be around somewhere, so it might be interesting to see what kind of games that general RMN visitors are most interested in on the front page. Could decide how to do future featuring.

Prepare to catch 'em all soon, guys.
