SKYRIM HYPE THREAD: UNDEAD CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE DRAGON'S SOUL
Posts
author=Craze
Man, giants TERRIFY me. I had one come at me and my companion (Lydia) out of absolutely nowhere when we were hunting elk and wolves along a river. I decided to run and got across the river in a hurry, but Lydia was a little further back when the giant arrived and promptly got flattened.
The giant chased me across the river and up a winding road for what felt like two or three kilometers. It just wouldn't quit! Eventually it got tired of chasing me and walked off.
The whole while I was being chased, I was feeling something I had never felt before in a game. Even though Lydia has as much character as a cardboard box, I was REALLY hoping that she was okay and was thinking of her safety the whole time I was running away (this was before I realized companions seemed unable to be killed or harder to kill than the player since Lydia ran out of health twice and got back up before). I honestly felt terrible for "leaving her behind" and, when it was safe, I ran all the way back to where the initial meeting was with the giant (took almost two minutes) constantly thinking "please let her be okay!"
When I got to where we first saw the giant... No sign of Lydia. I panicked a bit and could not see her anywhere, but then I turned around and WHAM! There was Lydia looking at me.
Biggest sigh of relief I've had yet.
In short, giants are scary. When they are chasing me I feel like a victim in a horror movie running from the serial killer.
Giants are awesome, I saw a bunch of mammoths, tried to get closer. One of the giants walked to me, and went into battle stance... I was like WTF, okay dude okay, I'm leaving, then I took a few steps back, and he calmed down and went back.
Awesome.
Other funny encounter, saw a dragon fighting a giant, so I'm like, okay, I got this, I will help the giant and perhaps get a dragon soul. Dragon lands in front of the giant, and I accidentaly hit both with Fuss (or is it Puss?). Giant gets kinda mad and the next thing I know, I am flying in the air exactly like that bear in Craze's video. I laughed. Then reloaded.
Don't know if the power of their attacks is just easter an egg or intended, but giants are waaaay too awesome.
EDIT: Oh Im just throwing this here.... :

First time I met a giant it went like this:
Holy shit what is this... A mammoth skull?!?
Then saw a man. Hmm he looks close ill talk to him.
Hmm he is farther away than I thou--HOLY F A GIANT! Then he clubbed me so hard I died instantly and went flying up a mountain.
Reloaded and went a NEW way, only to meet? You guessed it. A woolly goddamn mammoth. Fml

Can anyone please explain to me what makes this game so widely appreciated?
Only a few minutes of gameplay are available to watch on youtube right now, and I have to say that nothing strikes me as innovative or impressive.
From what I can watch I suppose there is a ton of customization and collection possibilities, a lot of freedom in where to go and what to do, and the graphics are real pretty. But all that doesn't make me go "wow".
Seeing how the game is played I get the feeling that it can appeal to everyone who, as a kid, used to play in their backyard fighting imaginary monsters and wandering fantastic lands. That would appeal to me too if I were still a teen, but what I'm expecting from next-gen games nowadays is realisticness, or should I say I want them to be up to my "level" :
I want them to allow me to do ingame everything I can do in real life (or allow me to do things I cannot do in real life). I could defeat that dragon naked and using a dagger, with the help of my acrobatic moves, dodges, knowledge of anatomical weak spots and all that. But so far I didn't see any of that happen in the Skyrim videos I watched. The character sluggishly moves on his two feet. Can't he perform any evasive maneuvers or even jump for Hell's sake?
I'm no hater of the game. I just want to understand what I seemingly can't ^^

I can't and won't. That's why I'm asking for people who play the game to tell me about their own experiences.
You wander around having adventures, finding shit, doing shit, and fucking shit up. The world is your oyster and there's a ton of shit to discover, read about, find out about, and the story to enjoy (the universe of the Elder Scrolls is vast, expansive, and storied, to say the least). It is the primal, basic example of the need and the intense fun that can be had of exploration.
Really you're not going to get a good readout on why something is fun from some Youtube videos if you have no prior experience in the series and aren't willing to invest what, an hour or two (if the opportunity presents itself) to play it.
I am not ragging on you for having a different perspective but it's going to be quite limited if it's "I DON'T SEE WHY PEOPLE LIKE X THING BUT I WON'T TRY IT OR DO IT FOR MYSELF THOUGH."

I kind of thought the giants would attack you if it were attacked, rather then going near it. Obviously, I might get pwned the next time when I see them alongside the Mammoths.

So if I understand what you're saying, the game's world is deep and the biggest fun you get out of it is to discover everything that's in it.
Judging from the previous posts, players seem to be particularly moved on the emotional level by the game. Like I said I suppose that a game like that would be a dream come true to anyone who enjoys a deep immersive experience and really picturing themselves as the game's character. Is this how you would describe your own feeling about the game or is my hypothesis wrong?
One of my questions is, if the developers focused so much on creating a strong sense of immersion and exploration, why didn't they widen the physical abilities and mobility of the character (as they did in Assassin's Creed, for instance)? Correct me if I'm wrong there Feld, of course.
And let's stick to that. I don't believe in the "you can't understand it if you don't do it" stuff. :)

You must lead a dull, boring life.
EDIT: Here is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, distilled:

Guys, marry Ysolda (the girl in Whiterun who wants to buy the inn). You get free meals AND free money from her selling wares. Awesome.
I heard windowed mode works best if you get too much crashes and freezes. Though it's small widescreen, can't seem to move to the middle. And it's best to use a black background.

My buddy just started playing as Lee Baker, his swordsman from Dungeons and Drag-Queens. True to his character, Lee uses a wood chopping axe and hasn't changed since. He just killed a dragon with an axe to the face.
It's hilarious watching hearty Lee Baker overcome any obstical with this stupid axe. Best of all he seems to constantly be attacking foreheads, which was his primary move in Dungeons and Drag-Queens (Forehead Swing).

I had gotten the first companion Lydia, and she kept disappearing on me, thought I ran away from a random dragon, and come back for her, and she survived suddenly.
I also heard she attacks a main quest guy who trains you in the dragonborn powers thing..... So I told her wait this time.

I love this game but draugr with disarm shout are complete bullshit and ruining the game for me. Every time I get hit with it I reload, because it is almost impossible to find my weapons afterward.
LONG stream of consciousness post some of which is possibly worth your time to read; I don't think it contains anything that actually counts as a spoiler, but who knows:
Started a second toon today to play with things like melee combat and SMITHING YESSSS SMITHING HISSSSSS and to have a character for whom the whole mainquest makes a teensy bit more sense. My 90-pound weakling graying tonsured Breton necromancer using the Thu'um just didn't seem right, so I rolled up a hulking blonde Imperial spellsword (Heavy, One-Handed, Block, Smithing, Destruction , Restoration).
I "stole" some blackberry mead from the inn in Riverrun and even though I got away with it at the time, the cook, Ongmund (or whatever, most Nord names are indistinguishable) sent a trio of three way overleveled thugs with two-handers to teach me a lesson as I found out several in-game days later when I was getting ambushed by hired thugs. I died about sixteen times in the ensuing fight with them, before I popped Voice Of the Emperor, allowing me to fight them one at a time, narrowly beating them in a series of three one-on-one duels. It was awesome. Later, though, when I confronted the guy who'd hired them to KILL ME over ONE BOTTLE OF MEAD he had nothing to say about it. : (
I thought it'd be legal if I punched him in the face but apparently that's assault.
Damnit Bethesda. I want to know whyyyyyyyyy.
Full set of Superior Steel armor/weapons by the start of Level 5. I really really really like crafting.
The Ritual stone power is fucking awesome. There are so many cool applications/uses of it/cool situations resulting from its use that I've discovered that I want to tell you guys about, but I gotta go play Skyrim.
Draughrs get shouts at some point? Weird!
Lydia followed Lysander for many many in-life hours without vanishing or causing any problems by attacking random NPCs. In fact, companion behavior and pathfinding seems massively improved. Of course, I have also seen her die numerous times. Once to a dragon, and once to standing right behind me while I roasted several (fellow) necromancers with a Fire Storm scroll.
My necromancer had a dark brotherhood assassin come to kill him. I still have no idea why. (No spoilers, please!)
Haven't fought any giants yet, the ones I've approached seemed really chill compared to these anecdotes I'm hearing, and I didn't want to start shit.
I wanted to marry her anyway, actually, but I haven't figured out how to marry people yet. Probably because...and this is probably my favorite part...in spite of spending the past three days FULLY engrossed in playing this game I have made NO real progress in it yet. I have no sense that I have even remotely scratched the surface of ANY of the quest lines, at all, after spending enough time here to beat five Modern Warfare length campaigns.
Has anyone else seen enemy necromancers SPONTANEOUSLY RESURRECT THEMSELVES AS ZOMBIES SECONDS AFTER DEATH? "Apprentice Necromancer's Apprentice Necromancer". I want to figure out if this is an awesome glitch, or just awesome. (FWIW, those zombies don't do anything except deny me a corpse to make a zombie out of.)
Man I completely fucking loathe the Thalmor. I have a feeling that that's going to be a common theme among all characters I play until I port my Altmer from Oblivion (who could very well be a continuation of the same character; they live a long fucking time).
I just got around to reading what has happened in the first two centuries of the 4th Era today. The emperor got its ass KICKED! And Morrowind got taken over by fucking Argonians. It makes me really sad but on the other hand HOLY FUCKING KARMIC JUSTICE, BATMAN. (If you didn't know, Morrowind was the only Imperial province subjecting beastfolk to the slave trade in TES3. So that they got their entire country taken over by fucking lizard people is all kinds of awesome, but I still feel a little bad for them, mainly because House Telvanni was SO AWESOME.)
