Man it's so bizarre that this is the only video game forum outside of RPGamer where GTA4 isn't the biggest event ever.

I've gotten much further into the game and I am particularly impressed by the writing. The main character is the most well-written character I've ever seen in a video game. He has a troubled past and is aware of the world around him and has an ambivalent feeling about it; he isn't a cutout hardass or paragon of virtue like most videogame heroes are. He's a real person with real feelings and he doesn't like to talk about them. When he *does* talk about them, you can see in his animation and hear in the acting that a wall has broken down and that he feels vulnerable or on the verge of tears. I play a ton of jRPGs, which are supposedly primarily about story (the makers of those games would disagree with this statement), and I can confidently say that GTA 4 is 400% as well-written as any jRPG out there. The visual design of Niko Bellic is something I could write pages about, but in short I can say that he is a daring decision and brilliant star.

I think that not playing or spending the time to appreciate the game is doing yourself an enormous disservice. There is real, solid stuff to this game. It has an artistic vision. I guess a lot of people assume that an open-world game like this is exclusively about driving really fast in a stolen car, and I suppose that if you never complete the first couple of missions, that's probably all you'll do. But if you play jRPGs and you claim that storyline and writing are major forces compelling you through a game, you'd be missing out on the best writing in a videogame yet by not playing GTA4.

That last part you wrote sounds like some kind of advertising pitch haha. I see the story and characterization in this game HAS improved since San Andreas which is always good, and since I found out some pretty annoying things in the censored version. I now HAVE to import a copy which is surprisingly cheaper then if I bought it in NZ haha.

Well I don't know man I just think it's criminal that jRPG nuts who love game stories and talk about GAMES AS ART aren't interested in the game that has the best story and is probably a culturally-relevant piece of art.
I'm all about GAMES AS GAMES.

Unfortunately, I never get past the first missions in GTA - I have too much fun driving really fast in a stolen car in an open world environment. :)
Watched my buddy beat the next 4 missions or so. My opinion still stands. The writing just isn't as good as you're advertising.

Maybe it's because the people at this forum are more level-headed than a whole bunch of circlejerking fanboys, Him? I mean, I can't say that for sure, but you never know.

I don't know why you continue to keep trying to persuade people that this game is dew from heaven. It seems some people here have already seen/played it and others (such as myself) are planning on getting it. Isn't that enough?

The Sims 2 has the best videogame writing ever and is much more open-ended than GTA4. Also, sims can shoplift items (including cars I'm pretty sure). If you are in cameraman mode, you can simulate driving around in a stolen car while in Neighborhood mode!
I am completely addicted to this game, stayed up until 5am playing the single player, and I haven't even touched multiplayer yet.

Niko, probably the best protagonist character I've seen in a commercial game in a long time really just... It's difficult to explain, but it's a far cry from the silent complacent protagonists of the earlier games. (Not that CJ was silent, or even a bad main character)

My favorite satire so far as been that rapper idiot who gets you to "clean the streets".

But there's so much more to it, I'd go into more detail, but I need to go back and play it some more.
Has GTA IV cured the problem with all the other GTAs I've played, where you play for about an hour, having plenty of fun stealing things and being bad and all, but then never really feel like playing again because there's too much to do but no real encouragement to do any of it? Because if not, I don't see how it can be the best game ever. I mean if that's the case, I don't even see how it can be a much better game than Dead Rising, which is exactly the same situation but at least there are zombies.

By the way, this isn't supposed to be an inflammatory question(perhaps it's meant to tease a little, but not actually anger, y'dig?), I earnestly want to know if GTA IV addresses that situation, or if it's squarely aimed at people who got more than an hour's enjoyment out of its predecessors.

Well, there are some extras that have incentive. For example, developing better friendships via optional excursions will yield certain gameplay advantages, like free taxi services or weapon delivery. There's some annoying skanque that you meet at the beginning of the game that you can date, but I'm not really sure what extra thing you get from here.

Many aspects of the game's flow have been improved. I simply love the new auto save; and the fact that you don't lose all your weapons upon dying anymore. Meaning you can go nuts, and get into trouble without worrying whether or not you've saved prior.

With the new features, and improvements of GTA, this installment would be a good one for sure. Hoping that it would be worth our money.
Well... I have yet to play this, but I played San Andreas for a little while. It seemed pretty fun, but the missions seemed a bit repetitive.

Actually it was a lot of what Shadowtext said, running around for an hour before getting kind of bored. I will play it some more this week, but I have to follow up on his question at the moment:

Is there more variety in the missions?
Is the aiming better?

Is there more to do?

Like I said I played it for a few hours today and I already feel like I did everything there was to do, but I guess I will see.

Ive only played it for a couple of hours but from what I played the aiming was better, and the cover system helps with that, and from what Ive been told the variety in missions is better in this, but still the old GTA fashion.

Double post I know but this thread needs a bump! Plus Ive now played the game more so..

The combat system is actually a step back in some ways though, you kick, block, or punch and you can never change styles of fighting or get any stronger, plus the civilians can actually fight back now and kick your ass pretty good, I guess they wanted it more realistic instead of being this God like character where you can kill anyone with like 3 hits or something.

Driving can be annoying at first but you get used to it, the aiming and cover system are very handy, again take a bit of getting used to but once you have it under control you can just go around shooting people in the legs and shit and they start limping and what not.

The characters and voice acting, reactions, movements are absolutely amazing, some of or maybe THE best Ive seen in a video game, it's amazing how much detail Rockstar put into this game.
Oh yeah definitely hand-to-hand sucks in this game. Of course you only need to do it like once in the entire game so. Anyway, it's clunky and awkward and doesn't really work and it doesn't feel very engaging when you punch, kick, dodge etc. I actually prefer a system where I mash the button to win opposed to something like this which is complicatd but not really tight enough to function.

I think the aiming system is a perfect balance between giving you control over where you want to shoot the bad guy but keeping it from requiring the precision of a shooter. It's a really clever balance.

But yeah this game isn't perfect and it's rough around the edges in some spots and the game actually kind of nosedives into boring droll without any plot development exactly halfway through (not even kidding). It's an incredible game though, and definitely more than the sum of its parts (this is the video game buzz phrase of 2008).

But...but...it had 100% on Metacritic!

I didn't care much for GTAIII and it's ilk, so I doubt I'll ever try this. No one I know owns it, either.
I'm sure a couple of games in the 90s would've got 100% on metacritic if the internet was so popular back then.
yeah a lot of my work chums have been playing this game non stop and some have conquored 80, 90% in only a few days. But i don't like the GTA games anyway so i'll never play this.

You see thats the thing, although it clearly is a GTA game, even people not interested in the previous games might find something worthwhile in this one.
