These remnants are really good!

Hello and welcome to the review of Remnants! A JuneFlowa's game made with RPG Maker 2003 in 2020. Ok, ok I'm a bit late with this review, but I've already played another game by this author, LABYRINTH - Derelict Abyss (read HERE my impressions!) that I reviewed in 2020, and it was released shortly after Remnants. Since these game are a bit similar (but they do not look like to be connected, so play both in whatever order you prefer) because of similar graphics and structure, I decided to take some time between the two reviews. Ok maybe I took too much time, but here we are now, reviewing Remnants!

Like LABYRINTH, this is another sort of walking simulator with no combat or puzzles, just exploration of a mysterious landscape while eerie music plays.

Uhm yeah. Usually. It depends... better, but for who?

Every single map is custom made, drawn with vibrant colors over a black background. There are lots of details, and every map has also a particular name. The maps form the various levels of a facility and our alter ago, a mysterious creature wearing a blue hooded cloak, has to descend each level and reach the final area. The exit? Or something else?
Nah I won't tell anything else since this game is all about exploration and experiencing it, it's very short and in the end the more I speak and show, the less will be the beauty to visit the surreal rooms of Remnants.

Well this game is basically a tour of a mysterious facility, as there are no real dangers and the puzzles that block our path are so trivial they cannot even be defined puzzles! But at least there aren't labyrinth or repetitive areas, on the contrary each room and level is different and mysterious. Unfortunately this lack of repetitions means that the game is also pretty short, I'm sure that most people would finish it in less than 30 minutes (25 minutes is ok I think) despite the presence of many points of interests and interactions. Anyway short but good, graphics are custom and evocative despite being stylizes, and the music is unique.

Yes this is cute, But there are better things to do, like finishing this review!

Final Verdict
Remnants is a fascinating game, I liked it as much as LABYRINTH - Derelict Abyss, but maybe a bit less because the former had some more interesting creatures and ending, but ok it's subjective. The game is linear and short but if you like exploring a mysterious and evocative setting you may like it. Ok, there isn't much story (and that's a weak point since the dialogues came out as bland and banal, due to a protagonist that isn't very developed but it's just our alter ego in this descent), but the music is enjoyable, very moody and atmospheric, and well complements the strange visuals.

Overall a great game for someone and a dull one for someone else, but that's a matter of taste: the game is good, looks good and sounds good, even if it's not much of a "game", but so neither Yume Nikki and similar games are. However for me it was an enjoyable experience... even if I still consider LABYRINTH - Derelict Abyss a superior adventure!
