Most of humanity has been wiped out due to an unexplained cataclysm. So what do we do when a tragic event like that happens? Why, we host a World's Fair, that's what we do! Not only that, we transform the countryside into one big live-action RPG. Such is the fate of the main character Dakota, as he is chosen to take part in this "Grand Role Playing Game Exposition". Now he must find a handful of magical cards scattered throughout the landscape and make his way to the fair.

Along the way questions will arise, cliches will be examined, and friends will be made.

Dakota the RPG is a love letter to the classic turn-based RPGs of the eighties and nineties, four years in the making. Although it's still being worked on, this is a complete project, consisting of the first 5 or 6 hours of what will probably be a 15 to 20 hour adventure. So think of this "playable demo" as the first movie of what will hopefully be an epic trilogy.

FEATURES

  • Turn-based battle system as well as visible enemies (no random battles)

  • Equip cards instead of gear to enhance your stats and acquire various abilities

  • Multiple storylines intersecting into a single narrative, each with their own play mechanics

  • A variety of pixel art styles, ranging from early console games and crpgs from the 80s to the 16-bit era in the 90s

  • Cinematics similar to those found in CD-ROM games from the 90s

  • Synthwave/shoegaze inspired soundtrack

This game looks awesome! I'll see if I find the time to give it a play and share any thoughts/feedback with you.
Thank you! And thanks for your comment on the introduction page. I would love to hear someone's thoughts. But even if you don't get around to it, I still appreciate you being the first person to give me a comment. Now I am less afraid of getting pushed down and lost in the vast ocean of titles available here. So, thank you for that as well.

The game looks great, and if it plays great, you'll have people downloading it in droves. It also wouldn't hurt to look into one of the review threads if you want what is essentially a demo, according to you, reviewed.

To this point, probably the most active (only?) review thread is halibabica's.
I heard the party was here! I'll definitely subscribe and try the game out soon! You wouldn't happen to have a twitter, would you? I'd love to follow you more places and see your art.

All I got at the moment is a blog and a youtube channel. Just set up instagram, but nothing is there yet. Hope to add more stuff from here on out.

Indeed.
Hey Harlancore, congratulations on completing your project! (or this milestone of it anyways) Just tried a bit of it, the immersive visual style is fantastic! The whole atmosphere really captures my attention, Gonna try to make some time to play the whole thing, but I really like what I see.
