So far, I have eight main characters, possibly a few hidden.

Oni
The hero, 35, ex-general. The game is named Atonement, because that is what Oni thinks he needs to have.
He feels so guilty, about many things, that he shuts himself off from the rest of the world. He feels it will protect his feelings, and possibly, the lives of others. He feels useless, because in his mind, he cannot protect the ones he loves. So, for awhile, the entire game revolves around this motivation.

Masako
29, female, captain. Masako is a lot of things to many different people. To Oni, she is a friend and comrade.
To the inhabitants of her town, she is a peacekeeper. She is extremely kindhearted, jumping into a fire for a friend without a thought as to her own safety. She's a little ditzy, but her heart is in the right place.
Masako and Ro Oso seem to have a history together, that will be explained as the game progresses.

Vala
33, female, WM Acadamy Headmistress. Vala is a White Mage, Who keeps watch over the students in her academy. She also oversees the testing grounds, for graduation. She meets Oni early in his adventure, and is one of the major love interests. When she was young, she was asked to leave her village for an unspecified reason.

Ro Oso
26, male, Black Mage. Unlike the others, Ro Oso really has no conflict about his place in the world. Where everyone else questions themselves, he is sure of his place. The rest of humanity is trash. He is an elitist, kind of a racist, and a xenophobe. It is highly doubtful that his attitude will change. He is extremely indebted to Masako, though he won't say why.

Fakito
37, male, Town Father/Shamed Gambler. Fakito is a town governer, until he makes a few mistakes and is asked to vacate his position.. Oni and crew meet him once in his first guise, and it seems that he actually joins the party in the second guise. He uses Samurai techniques, and names all of his swords after females he has known and loved. He is also a giant flirt, and quite a self-styled ladies man.

There are more, but they are staying close to my vest.
