The year is 2011, and a terrible infection has spread across the United States.

The infection was airbourne as well as highly contagious. Symptoms were similar to the flu, including high fevers, vomiting, coughing, as well as a general weakening of the immune system. Due to this epidemic, the US began to collapse. Hospitals were overrun with infected patients, plants and livestock began to perish, which led to the economy's failure. All of the military bases were facing difficulties trying to quarantine the disease, even failing to stop the infection from spreading within their own ranks. There seemed to be no answer, and no cure...

But the worst was yet to come.

It was roughly a week before those who were unfortunate enough to become infected began to show enormous amounts of hostility to family, freinds, and strangers alike. This single infection brought down the entire USA from the inside, as its own citizens were murdering each other out of an unexplained rage.

It's been four weeks since the infection began. Those who were neither killed nor infected have held out and survived in shelters in cities, towns, and rural areas using any means necessary.

Now, follow the story of two survivors as they attempt to survive Hell on Earth.

Wow! That is quite the compliment, Caninemm! :) Thank you very much!

It is difficult, which was intentional for gamers who like a little challenge :p there's going to be an update sometime in the future which might help with that a bit.
I literally just bought rpg maker 2003 on steam and after playing your game for a bit I think it's safe to say I'm satisfied with my purchase knowing i can create a game of this caliber with rpg maker 2003.On a side note,The game is great although I found it rather difficult.

A few tips for battles would be to always make sure you Break Free when you're grappled, use Strong Kick on all enemies with John before you do anything else(unless it's breaking free from a grapple, that's always priority) After battles try to Clean Wounds is you're diseased before you enter another combat, and of course try avoiding battles if you can.
In the next update I'll include a level difficulty between Normal(easier) and Hard(what it is now) the Normal mode will have weakened monsters and have more health items generally as well as making some of them more potent.

EDIT HERE: To answer your question, there is no place to heal yourself for free, or back to full. There is one place, but it is in a cutscene area in a safe-house. Otherwise you're living solely off the land! Be sure to check everything, garbage cans are a big item spot.

As for the newspapers/etc I've thought about it and do have little things you can find to read but nothing really in depth. I've always wanted Infection to be a mystery of sorts.
Never really explaining how it started or how people reacted initially. Story-wise the infection spread very quickly and there just wasn't much normality after it started. Everything shut down because there were no people, besides those who were immune to it.

In an earlier version of the game I was going to go into the backstory more and have an organization that survived the apocalypse, hoping to rebuild the world in their own image. But the idea was a little too big for me and I wanted to finish the game, so ultimately I ended up making it more of a big ol' question mark as to the hows and whys.

Thank you for your feedback, and I'm always open to discuss any thoughts you have about Infection!

cakeislife, you're awesome :)
Thanks for the hint.
I still can't get anywhere because my characters die all the time xD
Every forced battle costs tons of consumables and once you run out of them...
Is there a place where you can heal yourself infinitely?

Btw, how about placing stuff like newspaper articles around, which explain a little bit of stuff that happened? Could be interesting, considered that our characters don't live in the save zones.

Thank you cakeislife!

Yes, I have been thinking of adding difficulty levels, so stay tuned for that. :)

You can find a generator in two different places, one in the big apartment building at the beginning of the city and one in a house in the furthest lower left of the map.

Keep going with it! :D
hello infectionfiles,
the game seems pretty realistic to me and the survival style is great!
The battles are tough, too tough for me...
Could you add different difficulty levels?
And where am I supposed to find the generator for the subway?
I can't get any further in the story...

How long will this game take me to finish?

I would say about an hour and 30minutes or so.

I've updated the download! So now it is truly complete besides maybe some bugs I missed. I have play tested quite abit and finding little things here and therr so let me know if you come across any!

Also, I'm going to be looking into the file size, pretty sure there is a song or two not being used. Noticed it bumped back up to 95mb so I'll see what I can do.

Thank you everyone and Merry Christmas! :)

Thank you all for the feedback, but I guess it comes down to personal taste in this RPG community. Because I believe this game used to be too easy in earlier versions. And to be honest I'd rather have a hard game than an easy game.
And I know a lot of hardcore RPG players feel the same way. You have to think too that this game isn't a 20 hour epic, it's a shorter to medium game. So with that it shouldn't start out easy. In fact it gets easier as is progresses , like Avee said. Once you learn it and do everything you can to help yourself in the game, you will succeed.
It's supposed to demostrate the struggle of the characters. There are no shops, you have to scavenge. You can't just one shot infected because this isn't AMC's the Walking Dead.

I realize this game isn't for everyone. But I do please those that enjoy a challenge in a game.
no no, game is too hard, better balance the gameplay and attack dmg, it takes too long to kill a zombie its unrealistic
@shayoko: That's too bad. I also think the game is difficult but not impossible. In fact I've never been really close to being game over'd. By using most skills and searching every object in the game to find weapons and food you can survive quite easily. Battles also get much easier when you reach Level 4-5.

too hard in a bad way lack of supplies no bed for healing
zombies are too strong in this situation, narrow areas that make it tough to avoid them and some that move fast :/
i did not even get to the room with the main office to get to the key
surviving in real life would be easier :(

Just updated the download with a major update to Infection's storyline!
And when I say major, it's not like the game has an entirely different story, just one part has been revised.

So, to anyone that plays, let me know what you think. I personally think it flows abit better and it also stars the first mini-game of any Infection every!

I appreciate the advice, kumada. And I totally agree with you actually. the things m doing are small things that I can without a load of effort. Its not a total overhaul, I have thought about some things that would be cool but too much editing.
I want a good storyline that flows well so I need to edit some parts.
I'm already done with the first thing I wanted to do. I might not redo the intro, just a thought.

I thank you those for caring, and I promise this project won't die because of editing.
The best advice I can give here, as someone who writes, is not to scrap what you've done. Re-writing is onerous enough when you're working purely out of a word document. When you're designing a game, it can spin off loads of extra things to work on. Which adds to project time. Which gives you time to mature as a writer. Which causes you to realize other things you could fix, and jump-starts the cycle anew.

People who get stuck in this kind of compulsive editing deathloop are usually overlooking some major details. The first of which is that this is not your last project ever. All the things you've learned from this--things about coding, things about narrative flow--you can carry into future projects. Your game is not going to be perfect. It never will be, no matter how much it gets revised, because no creative project ever is.

What your game can be, however, is finished. Last November, I wrote a novel. It was tough and frustrating and a hell of a learning experience, and as I started nearing the end of it, all I wanted to do was scrap it and start over. Instead, I powered through and was shocked by how accomplished I felt.

No, that novel will never be exactly what I wanted from it, but working on it taught me a lot, and people seem to have genuinely enjoyed reading it.

There's always time to fix past mistakes in your next project. A little bit of editing/debugging is all well and good, but I've seen too many amazing projects languish in overhaul-hell. I really don't want to see Infection go the same route.

Hello everyone!
Dropping by for one of my status reports!

Big changes in storyline are coming to Infection, one of them being that I'm replacing the entire Black Flag part of them game to something a little different. I always felt I was rushing it by having it in Chapter one, so now you come across more survivors with their own I'll intentions.
And they more I think about it the more I'm not sure I ever want to include the bf company inthe future of them game. Its too cliche, I feel. But that hasn't been decided one way or the other yet.
Also I plan on redoing other parts of them game, like the beginning, not a radical change just refresh it habit, make it more believable. As I have never been 100% happy with it
I will be updating the download soon with their bigger change to the latter part of chapter one, very soon.
I'll make a new post or edit this one when its been uploaded.
Because of this I'm starting fresh on chapter two, it will start out a tad differently, as Reiner isn't present.

I want to make this game the best it can be, so if I'm not happy with something then you better believe. I'll edited.
I promise you this game will be completed!

Thanks Sabin. :)

I've hooked up my old computer and as I write this I have been working on Infection, and I came across some really nasty little bugs in Chapter 2, so I will be uploading a fixed version tonight.
I can't believe they existed in the first place!

EDIT: Oh, and to those that are interested(sabin ;D) in the next big update I'm going to be adding a third sequence in Jonathan's flashbacks, which will tie his backstory together, depicting him with Natalya during the first stages of the infection. This will be a staple for all characters as they will each have three flashbacks showing some origin stories.
Take your time, partner, we're not going anywhere either :)

Hey everybody, just popping in to give a small update!

I haven't had much time to work on Infection as much as I'd like, and I haven't had my ancient computer set up that has my rm2k3 and all my files, so work has definitely slowed. Buut I've been taking a lot of notes and I'm going to be implementing new skills for many of the enemies as well as the characters and I'm going to start adding in my cutscenes(similar to the one at the very beginning in the apartment building)
I've been going over Chapter 1 a lot, trying to make it the best experience possible and very soon(I hope) I'll have more Chapter 2 content ironed out.

So stay tuned, because this game isn't going anywhere no matter how long it takes!

Cheers!
