Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

There's only two, sadly. But hey, a custom-content tsundere is always a possibility for anyone who wants to write. Perhaps I should write one..
I couldn't write one to save anyones life... :<
Your brilliant passive-aggressiveness..

We need a well written tsundere character, though.

...proves that you can sound like a tsundere in tsuntsun mode whenever you feel like it. I figured that you could write one easily enough.

I, uh, think everybody should just calm down a bit?

Dozen, do you need a hug?
Getting defensive is totally not the answer
The solution is to get offensive!

Yes, get offensive like I am calling their writing shit or something. I didn't say we needed better tsundere characters cause the writing or story is shit...I just can't be bothered to read every little detail about every custom character, etc

What we really need in this game is Jaba the Hut, and he needs to be lovesick so that it's easy to engage in sexytime with him.
...Nami from One Piece is a well-written Tsundere. Or at least as close to Tsundere as you'll get in OP... though I guess Boa is also one, though she's only Tsun with the rest of the world and Dere with Luffy. (I think I have that the right way around. Dere being all loving and sweet, right?)

I mean, what?

Oh and instead of labelling and making them stereotypes why not try to make them well-rounded characters instead?
  • Like the Sporty type - give her a love of classical music and a hatred of greens - who can't swim well though she excels at other sports, and who enjoys learning to play the violin/piano even though she's tone-deaf. She's instantly more interesting than just another "Sporty" girl.
  • Or the 'little sister' type who is more like Denis the Menace but isn't annoying, and has a wicked sense of humour and isn't scared of anything but who hates to be hugged and doesn't cling to her 'onii-san'.
  • Or a Tsundere who, instead of lashing out instantly, plots and plans to get back at her crush for embarrassing situations and is seen as a warm-hearted person by the rest of the class but hates cute things.
  • Or the Tomboy who likes to dress up pretty when at home and can sing better than anyone but is shy to do so around people she doesn't know.
  • Or the fashionista ice-queen who has a weird style and dresses up in clothes that are just-shy of cool, but because she's pretty everyone thinks she's the coolest, even if around her friends she's a bit of a dork who loves playing practical jokes.
  • Or the bookworm who is self-confident and sometimes silly, who likes swimming and works to save money to buy pretty ornaments that she collects instead of books and who has no imagination at all.
  • Or the prankster who spends most of her nights on the internet, live-blogging and skyping with friends. Who's shy and quiet when not pranking, but loves a good romance novel and enjoys playing chess at the after-school chess club.

How about real people instead, eh?

It's a Japan and anime/manga thing people seem to enjoy though. I honestly still enjoy this game without custom content or with it added.

Yes, if only it'd not cause copyright issues. Well, George Lucas did say "fuck it" with the star wars franchise..... I think most games that do have copyright wouldn't face legal issues since the games are almost always free
Now, now. There is plenty to go around with our two tsunderes respective personalities.
Riho in particular stands out as a subversion and deconstruction of the archetypical working woman who has no time to care for relationships. The tired cliche version of this story would be a struggle with society as she tries to live up to her life choices with quite a lot casually sexist undertones that suggest working-oriented females can't maintain a normal life.
In her case, it's fun to watch as it gradually turns out she hates working herself to death, isn't actually all that smart, and only tries to thrive in areas she has no talent in to live up to imagined expectations of her parents.

In the end her plan undermines itself entirely; Shihoko is popular because she is social and makes good use of what little she knows, while Riho either mimics her qualities without understanding the reasons behind her success, or rejects her good qualities and tries to one-up her in another area she can't become good at, as she didn't pick one she can enjoy. And it backfires on her, because of course it does. You can't master a skill you aren't good at and have no passion for. The very least, you should be mildly interested to stand out, which for her was the whole point.
So, she isn't failing until the player helps her out due to being a girl. She fails due to being kind of a dummy.

It's all realistic enough in my opinion. That's how the world works more often than not. Kicks the extreme optimism of the American(Japanese?) dream right in the balls.
Also what are all these famous people doing here aaaah not without my makeup Overseer off>.<*hides*
I told them you guys were being defensive in that 'what are you thinking now' thread. xD

I guess that made some of the mods and admins check this thread for some reason whenever I knew you guys were being sorta silly.

Defensive? My post in the last page was my defensive disposition? You either read it totally wrong or I'm the worst person ever. (I'm the worst person ever)

Well in the end you pointed out it wasn't really a criticism as much as your love for tsunderes, so, no harm done. Misunderstanding on my part. Enjoy the, whatever you are doing:3
I am pretty sure if I came here and said the writing was shit for the characters and the game is shit that'd be "trolling".

I love this game and like how it has an interesting take for a change. I never played a VN/date sim like a board game.
I am gonna assume, this has top 5 worth of downloads now? Awesome!

EDIT: I can dream, can't I!?
Hello, I have been playing your game all week and it is a very good game! Well done! This was my first VN, I have been wanting to play one for awhile. I feel like this could have easily been made into an anime or manga series, and really felt it the more characters I added to the mix. Speaking of, I like how customizable it is. The stories are written well, Ferdinand is a likeable POV character. It thankfully didn't get eroge, at least with what I've played so far. If I had picked this up years ago in high school it would have changed things for me I think!

I wasn't really thrilled with the artwork for the characters, and went digging around BASS and found a user that had some really good poses, so I use them. The only issue is the phone icon, which tend to get only part of their faces in the box. I would suggest not changing this, however. I think it adds to the charm, because I can't take a picture well with my phone as it is. I would have liked to see graphics for all the characters, say like an angry Masashi, or a friendly Takuya, for reference points, instead of seeing an empty screen after reading the texts.

Game progress: 1st game end with Miki, second game end with Riho (and in the same save Shihoko). Keika will be next.

Question: Do we get more than one ending for each girl?

Looking forward to more, guys! Keep it up!

It would be a bit dishonest to call it just a VN. The Dating Sim elements give Heartache an innovative flair, but it makes it stand apart from the rest all the same.

Not as such. The system makes it possible, but none of the built-in content implemented more than one.

We're glad you liked it so~^^! Hope to live up to your expectations!:3
