A Faithful Remake of Dragon Quest 1 with Many Enhancements

This will be a spoiler free review of Dragon Quest Plus. I just finished the game and all of the extra content and I love this game.

Dragon Quest Plus is a remake of the first Dragon Quest game with enhancements that reference stories and features throughout the original series. The main story is just like the original game: level up and get stronger, explore dungeons and towns, find treasures and buy equipment/supplies, save the princess, and defeat the Dragonlord. This game is a faithful adaptation to the original game with enhancements to make the game even more fun.

Back in the land of Alefgard.

The original Dragon Quest 1 has much more grinding than a lot of RPGs today. Dragon Quest Plus will play a lot like the original game to stay true to the original work but addresses that first issue in many ways. Dragon Quest Plus has many quality of life upgrades to make the game play smoother and faster. First, the text and battles play faster and the button commands use modern game design concepts like automatically using the action button to do the obvious actions- the old game had the player manually press commands for using stairs and opening doors for instance. The best part of the game is that you will see different visual locations and each area has unique songs from different Dragon Quest games. There are also new zones in the main game and a lot more zones in the post-game to keep the game going after the main adventure is done. I’m so glad that there is so much post-game content.

This is the only spoiler free custom map I can show. There are so many other locations.

Graphically, Dragon Quest Plus uses the Super Nintendo Style graphics of Dragon Quest 3 (SNES Version) along with the other SNES Dragon Quest games. Some of the areas took slight creative liberties to change the original game. Many areas used songs from many different Dragon Quest games. Some maps were altered graphically like the addition of a dark forest, some town settings were a different environment, or some gameplay features in towns and dungeons were added to really flesh out the locations. A great upgrade is giving every item in the game a visual graphic in-game and in the menu- That was not in the older games and I really love that upgrade. Every battle also has animated monster graphics when the older games had still image monster graphics. These add-ons make Dragon Quest Plus feel like a fresh new game. In each location, you get to hear multiple orchestras from multiple Dragon Quest games. A favorite feature of mine is that you can choose which battle theme and ship theme you want to hear from Dragon Quest 1-11, Dragon Quest Monsters, and Dragon Quest Swords. I feel like there is a secret soundtrack if I choose a different numbered track…is there?

When I play this game, I feel like I am playing an enhanced version of Dragon Quest 1 made by the official Enix team. I had to play as much of the game as possible because it feels like it was made with so much care and dedication to capture the spirit of the Dragon Quest series. This game took 11 years to make, and my Almighty, what a payoff to the developer and all lovers of Dragon Quest. This game is beautiful and is a must play to ANY Dragon Quest lover. If you make Dragon Quest Plus 2, it would be my honor and pleasure to play and review your game again. Thank you to the entire team for making this game a reality.

"Da da da, da-da daaah."

Oh, wow! Thanks for this review Biggamefreak! It is a relief to hear many echo the same thoughts about this game. I know this game isn't perfect, but I'm happy to see that the design aspects that I worked on the most are being well received!

Thanks again for taking the time to do this review!
Nothing will ever be perfect. When I started, I thought I was going to play a simple DQ remake with a touch of extras. I got a true nostalgic journey with lots of extras from a development team who clearly loves the entire series.

I played nothing but Dragon Quest + until I completed the game. This is a great upgrade to Dragon Quest 1 and we have it on RMN as an RPG Maker 2003 game- what a real treasure. I cannot wait to see a sequel.

Well, again I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

This will most likely be my one and only complete game to leave here on RMN. So it's good to go out on a good note.

In terms of a sequel...that isn't happening, lol. However, I am in the planning phase of a new project on Unity. If you'd like to see what I'll be up to next, you can follow my Twitter if you'd like:

Thanks for playing!
