Black Magic Animation Tests

Spent the day working on my man Wedge and his badass Black Magic. Finished up the core three elemental spells (nine animations) as well as his Limit Break animations (Ether Overflow still needs some sound effects, though).

Well, enjoy! Suggestions are always welcome.

P.S. I disabled my HUD Add-On for this video, because there's still some lingering visual bugs that I need to iron out. Didn't want to show off an incomplete work, there.

The skills are pretty cool.
I just don't like the video's audio.
I don't really have any control over that. The program I'm using to record video is painless and easy, and if that's the way the audio comes out on it, so be it, heh. The videos are really just to show progress, anyway.

If anyone knows of a program that's easy and records audio better than what they are hearing in these videos, by all means let me know and I'll grab it ASAP.

EDIT: After checking, it looks like I had it recording from the microphone rather than system audio, so that explains the drop in quality. On the next video (the one with ALL black magic spells, including the mighty ULTIMA, I'll double check to make sure it's recording the sound at a higher quality.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

As much as I love classic Final Fantasy, its black magic has got to be one of the most boring skillsets ever. Hope you're able to work some of the more fun and interesting spells into it. I saw Poison and Bio in there at least, and I like the limit breaks.

What you've got looks mostly good, so far. Some of the animations are kind of slow and fadey, and don't really have a snap moment that feels like the main impact. Firaga and Thundaga are probably the worst. Not sure if that's a result of the timing of the flashes and sound effects, or your game having a different framerate than the game they're ripped from, or the game they're ripped from having the same problem, or what.

Man. I'm being unusually nitpicky about this game, even for me. I don't know bro, sorry, I do it because I care (probably)
I welcome your input dude, especially yours. You have experience mimicking Final Fantasy systems, after all.

All of the animations are subject to change, and based on your comments, I may just revisit some of the stronger elemental spells. Most of the animations I have here are from a set made by someone over on another forum, so they were easy tween jobs. Perhaps I'll take some time, fire up Photoshop and put together a few of my own, heh.

I was testing out a few of these spells last night, and some of them do need a little tweaking. Drain was dealing somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 damage at level 99 (all spells gain strength as levels are gained), which is just absurd. I went ahead and fixed that, giving it the same power level as Rasp and Absorb (which is like, 3). Ha.

As for interesting spells... well, I included some of the ones with special targeting like Quake, Tornado and Meltdown, which damage the party as well as enemies. Of course, there are ways to avoid being damaged by any of them yourself (Float, equipment that protects against Wind elemental damage, NulBlaze, etc.)

If you have any suggestions for new Black Magic spells, by all means, post it here and I'll see if I can code it in.

Heh, when we were looking at black magic spells to recode the job in UOSS we were like "...uh. Erm. Hmm. Uh. Hmm. Screw this, let's work on a different job instead."

Some of the better ideas we considered were abilities from well-known bosses, actually. Others are spells that only were in one or two games, or spells that were black magic in some games and white magic in others, or passive spells that could be made more interesting by being turned into active ones. We have no idea what we're doing at this point, so feel free to use any of these!
- Wall Change (gives the player a random elemental weakness and resistance, and makes you counterattack with magic of the element you're resistant to)
- Black Hole (Zeromus's version - esuna+dispel on all allies+enemies)
- Dispel
- Oil
- Reverse (swaps the effects of damage and healing on the target)
- Meltdown (FF8 version - non-elem damage + pdef down)
- Recall (use a random black magic spell for 0 MP)
- Half of MP (spells cost half MP for the rest of the battle)
- MP Turbo (spells cost double MP and are stronger for the rest of the battle)

If you don't have a time mage, you can also steal some of the more interesting time magic spells:
- Demi
- Reflect
- Undo (revert the target to its hp/mp/status from the previous round)
- Comet (highly random single-target damage)
- Meteo (random-target damage)
- Invis (immune to physical, weak to magic)
- Countdown (death or massive damage after 5 rounds)
- Dispel is a White Magic spell in this game, and removes all benficial status conditions on a single target.
- Oil is a Red Magic spell in this game, and increases damage received from Fire elemental spells. The state is removed if the afflicted is damaged by a Fire elemental attack or a Water elemental attack.
- Reverse is known as Zombie and is a Red Magic spell in this game, and causes the afflicted to uncontrollably attack random targets while being unable to restore HP.
- Leon has a Holy Art that acts the same way FF8's Meltdown does. It inflicts damage and lowers physical defense.
- Recall was considered for Lyra's special ability, but was scrapped in favor of Treatment. In addition, the Sage's Surplice relic adds the Blindcast command to a character, which enables them to cast random Black Magic spells (within reason, you're not getting Flare or Ultima from it, heh).
- Half of MP is a status condition inflicted by the Golden Hairpin relic.
- MP Turbo is a status condition inflicted by the Soul of Thamasa relic.
- Demi is a Black Magic spell in this game, and deals Gravity elemental damage to a single target equal to 50% of the target's current HP.
- Reflect is a White Magic spell in this game.
- Comet was not added in favor of Wedge having Meteo as a Limit Break, and two other non-elemental options (Flare/Ultima).
- Meteo(r) is Wedge's second Limit Break, and deals non-elemental damage to three random enemies three times each.
- Invis is known as Vanish in this game, and acts the same way. Those inflicted with it evade all physical attacks and cannot evade any magic attack. Being attacked with any magic spell removes the state.
- Countdown is a Blue Magic spell in this game, called Death Sentence.

SO! All good suggestions, and most of them exist in the game already. Undo is interesting, I'll see what I can do with battle events to make that one a reality. Although, I must say it sounds like it'd be more suited to White or Red magic, or even Blue Magic. Gotta love those niche Blue Magic spells.

I know most/all of those can be made into spells in other categories, or into passive effects. My mindset, though, was that other skillsets already have all the cool shit, and some of those spells can stand to be either moved to or duplicated in black magic.

Really, I think if the skills sound "not suited to black mage" to you, it's probably because your idea of black mage is "all the most basic boring attack spells, and very little else." Which, while an accurate description of its role in most of the FF games, is probably not an ideal motif to aim for!

Also, Zombie and Reverse aren't the same thing. Zombie makes healing spells hurt you. Reverse does that plus also makes damage spells heal you.
Ah yes, Reverse was in... FFXII, I think? I'll put in a request for a script to handle that, coding it through events would be way too much of a pain in the ass. Hopefully I can add that in.
