Too dark. I can't see a thing in here, and I doubt most people will... And I hope it's not intentional. No matter how 'scary' you want your game to be, you should never obscure the visibility for the player like this.
The brightness of your monitor is set way too low man, This is pretty normal on most people's monitors.
Check out this guy's resident evil. It's a lot darker than mine and it's EPIC!

I've looked at this image on 3 different people's computers and on an ipad. On the computers I could clearly see every tile on the roofs and I would definitely not say it was too dark. On the ipad it was a little darker but still very visible.
Your comparison you posted - everything is more clearly defined in that one. I think the issue with yours is that it seems you are using fog effect with an overlay, at least it seems that way, because everything is blurry. It's not just dark, it's not clearly defined.

In any case I don't think you are getting the effect you want. Darkness is only effective on people because they can't see what is in the dark - fear of the unknown. I can see the whole screen so there is no need to fear the dark. I suggest making the outer layers of the circle overlay *almost* pitch black. That way if something moves in it it is impossible to tell what it was, but obvious that something is lurking in the shadows.
Thanks for that. I thought about doing that actually but I settled on just making the edges of the screen a little darker in the town its self. It's a very large map that players will spend a lot of time navigating around so I didn't want to make it needlessly difficult by limiting their view, It wouldn't really add much to the atmosphere.

Thanks for the constructive feedback though. I like that there is some clarity lost in the mist when you walk around the town. It gets thicker and thinner, as does the rain. I will turn the mist off and see how it looks but I don't think I'll like it as much.
I admit I still have a CRT monitor, but the real 'problem' is that most newer computer's screens are just too bright. Why would they care about that? I, on the other hand, have been working with graphics for a long time and I'm confident when I say something's too dark... But even if you're right, I can still see the character in that screen you posted there. That's the whole point. You should do that. =P

I'm sorry, I can't tell what you're tying to say here. Do you mean that you can't see the character and I shouldn't do that? I'm not trying to pick apart grammar or anything, I really am trying to see what you mean.

I have to say that when I test play the game or watch others test play it they have no problems walking around this map, It is quite well illuminated. I will look into it a little more but I really like the effect of the mist outside, in the haunted town. I don't mind that it takes some sharpness out of the image because it's not like that in houses, just when you're in the misty town.

I invite you to test the game and see what it's like when everything is in motion.
Yes, I think the player's character should be clearly visible at all times, even if you want to obscure its surroundings. Also, I'm sure that once in motion, playing in full screen and with the lights out, everything can be seen better. But that's hardly the point.
Ok dude, it's not that I'm ignoring your feedback, It's made me go back and examine it. I asked the two guys who have play tested it if the town was too dark and if I should think about dropping the mist and they said.

"no, the mist is white and pretty transparent, you can still see everything."

"If you took the mist out you'd lose some atmosphere and not gain anything"

Since this is also how I felt about i I've decided to leave it as is.
