I like it. Although, maybe some well-defined objects, like chalices, crowns, swords, etc. would make it look better (And skulls. Skulls are epic). As well as two smaller piles to the sides, for composition... Btw, what's with the scanlines?
Ooooo golden skulls, good idea, fits with the undead theme!

The scan lines are optional sexiness.

Loving the good ol' retro feel (scanlines and all). Especially the status information up top.

This reminded of:

The problem I see with your pile of gold is that it looks like a pile of golden dirt with red, white and very light green specks (what are all those?).

It would definitely look better and make more sense (are you going to use a shovel to put the gold into a sack?), for instance, if the pile was composed of gold coins (doubloons?), ingots or nuggets. Having a sack or two could also make it better. Definitely need to include a skull or skeleton in keeping with the necromancer theme.

Perhaps you could consider having a few smaller piles of different sizes, rather than a large one. Also, is there are reason why the pile of gold is cut off at the top?
The idea with the colored specks was the pile containing different kinds of rare gemstones, and just with the goal of adding more detail to it. This screen is scaled up 3x the actual resolution, I'm not sure how to go about making it clearly look like a pile of gold coins specifically. I'll try out seeing how I like a little round coin stacking pattern for the whole thing, and ingots are a good addition period.

As far as the leaving with all the gold bit, the cutscene is fun :D
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Those treasure chests are all on the ground, boring! Stick some up in the pile.

Rather than scattered individual red and green pixels to represent gems, it would look a lot better to draw larger gems. And then have them half-buried all up and down the pile of gole. I even think it would be fine if they are unrealistically large, like the size of his head.

The chests look great. As others said, loot would help a lot, but making the pile more of a pile instead of a trapezoid would also help. It doesn't have to be that high, but if it is, it should have multiple "peaks". Like a mountain range made of gold.
You could also add some random shiny animated gleams. The trick is to balance them out across the pile and not have to many happening at once. I'm not sure how many to put in there...One gleam for a tooth commercial, probably more for a giant pile of gold. I think the animation would help break up the gold pile a bit more.

Also maybe make the large back gold pile just slightly darker then the front gold pile. You probably want to make the gleams on the back pile smaller with some sort of slight tint as well. That way it shows the full girth of the gold pile and really give it some depth.
