We're now on Steam Greenlight!!
We need all your support so every vote counts!!

The Kickstarter Campaign has begun!

You Are Not The Hero Kickstarter

You Are Not The Hero is a new action platform RPG for the PC, inspired by all the people the heroes always ended up screwing over. Stupid heroes...

We ditch the battle system to focus on richer RPG gameplay elements. Instead of playing a traditional hero that saves the world, you're instead playing a bystander swept into the affairs of the heroes and villains alike.

You play as Petula, an unemployed, emotionally charged, ill-tempered, otherwise average young woman. With the royal army hot on their heels, the heroes have made their way to your village where they resume scavenging for supplies in everyone's homes. After confronting them for stealing your pendant, they rush off to continue their quest, giving you a quest of your own to retrieve it.

From now until November 12th 2013 we will be raising funds to complete You Are Not The Hero. As a backer of the project, you'll be able to influence varying styles of gameplay to be added and refined in the game. Rewards are anywhere from getting a digital copy of the game, a digital soundtrack and artbook, joining the game as an NPC with a custom bust and sprite, all the way up to designing your own town, becoming the mayor and creating your own specific quests and adventures, with up to 10 other people you specify!

As an RPG Maker game, we can show the world that the engine isn't just for half-baked games with little production value, but a powerful game creation tool that should command more respect than it has. Thank you all for your support! If you can spare a second, please share the Kickstarter link to your family and friends, or to other forums and communities that you frequent. Any and all support is greatly appreciated!

Well that exploded! :O No doubt that you'll get 100% funded by the end of next week. Preemptive congrats to you Seita :)
It looks like it uses RTP assets. Is this even allowed?

Wow, that´s some quick success! Looks you'll be funded pretty quickly (Fingers crossed that I'm not jinxing it). I wonder who'll be willing to pay for the upper tiers to get the privilege of developing along side you guys. I actually think that offering that's a neat idea, although it probably reduces the pool of donors willing to assume the additional responsibility.

Better to start thinking of stretch goals.

ps. Your trailer says you're using placeholder graphics. What sort of graphics are you planning to go for if you get funded?

Do you have anything to showcase? I believe it wasn't mentioned it in the kickstarter ad. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Why doesn't the campaign say anywhere that it's made with RPG Maker? Isn't that a little dishonest?
Thanks guys really appreciate it~

@Fidchell RTP is available for commercial use if you own the engine that it came with.

@edchuy I've got a few takers for the side quest already, though nothing yet for the people who can develop part of the game with me. They have the opportunity if they want, though it's not like it's necessary for me to finish the game~ Like a lot of people who've held Kickstarters have said, if you give them an opportunity to spend money on you, they'll do it.

@Happy I'm mainly talking about the MACK sprites and the RTP tileset. The mack sprites will be replaced with custom sprites by amicable, while the RTP tileset will only be replaced if I'm able to get someone to work on a custom tileset for the game, most likely if there is a stretch goal.

@Sailerius Honestly I was going to address it when someone brought it up on Kickstarter, but so far nobody has questioned it, not even through private messages which is pretty interesting. I'll address it sooner or later, it's only the first two days after all. I don't see anything wrong with using RPG Maker if that's what you mean, I do promise to address it eventually~ most likely when I submit it to greenlight where all of the naysayers come from.
@Seita You mention placeholder graphics. Does that mean you'll eventually replace the RTP? If not, I don't see how this is that big of an effort to warrant that sort of goal, even if the dev team is really bloated for an RPG Maker game.

Hi Fidchell,

Are you thinking, "if this gets funded and completed with only RTP graphics, it will just encourage people to launch more kickstarter projects with only RTP graphics"?

If so, please don't think that. If Enterbrain has afforded its customers the license to use RTP graphics, and the Kickstarter community accepts that, then that's fine. It's only bad to use RTP graphics when the Kickstarter community no longer wants them, and no longer pledges its support to those projects. I even say this as an artist myself.

Campaigns like this are a part of the evolutionary force which is going to determine if using RPG Maker to create a game is (finally) a viable business prospect.

I'd said this before in a thread in the help forum: $12,000 is not a lot of money for a development team to develop an RPG, even from a prototypical state. Especially in 2013. Due to the costs associated with developing a game like this, development time windows are best kept to around 1 year, and this will help to fund that.

You shouldn't warn Seita away from attempting success on the contingency that his game wouldn't "warrant that sort of goal". That isn't fair to Seita. Let his development team prove themselves in the field.

Yeah but looking at the final tier, $5000 is alot of money for what is essentially going to be an restrictive hands off approach on using rpg maker.

Sure you can't stop backers donating as much as they want, but the only reason I can see them giving that much money away is because they really wanted to get into game development without any knowledge of an easy to use engine that'll cost them just $59.99 to make their own game.

And if you're waiting untill after the campaign is finished to address what engine you're using without being asked, then it's going be a big slap in the face for all the high end backers when they do eventually find out. I know maximising as much funding as you can in the shortest period of time is the whole point of kickstarter, but you do have to be transparent from the get go.

PLEASE explain to me what you need that much money for for an RPG Maker project. Unless you are investing in someone's skills at an unreasonable amount, I can't begin to imagine how the funds accumulated by overall game development on an RPG MAKER PROJECT could lead to that huge amount unless the creator intends to use most of it for his utility bills.

And my thing with RTP isn't about the aesthetics themselves, but about the PROSPECT OF LAZINESS.

I am sure there are many excellent VX/VX Ace games out there being made that don't go through with this money-grubbing process.
Well this guy did it on Kickstarter and got $43,000 >> http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1465600975/echoes-of-eternia-a-modern-take-on-a-classic-desig

Never made the game in almost 21+ months. Still owes me money :-) 2 of my screenshots are still on the main kickstarter page. Since then the game has switched engines and graphics.

I have a feeling the average kickstarter user doesn't know what RPG Maker is. If anything, Kickstarter is some extra publicity even if it doesn't meet its goal.

SS, are those two next to bottom screenies yours? They look nice.

I suspect the average kickstarter user is by no means a venture capitalist and more like an angel investor. He/she doesn't focus on ROI (does use the rewards reaped by funding to determine the amount) but rather than growth, isn't doing much on the due diligence front, probably bases their funding decision more on the subjective than objective (more on feel than facts) and has a relatively high tolerance for risk vs. reward.

Then again, for the most part, we are talking about tens, maybe hundreds of $ at stake rather thousands or even millions.

Pro graphics, pixel-sprite work, music, and sound effects are hella-expensive. That's why (usually). If you have the in-house skills to cover music or graphics though you're ahead of the game (or if you find someone good on the cheap - but that's rare).

Good luck with this in any event! And there's nothing wrong with RTP imho. If it is keeping the project goals cheap and the donors like what they see anyway, then tis all good.
Hi guys,

you're right about being more transparent for the fairness of the higher tiers. I doubt anyone with that kind of money would actually pledge those amounts without first messaging me though, I've also noticed that people pulling the trigger on the $250 tier did so after I detailed it more in the comments. Regardless, ill address the issue today in the FAQ and put a note to contact me first.

As for that goal, I'm already getting criticism by the kickstarter community that the goal is too little compared to the development timeframe and the quality of the game being presented in the video. In one community I'm defending the viability by saying RPG maker allows me to offset costs because of the ease of development, while in another I have to explain what I'm using all the money for. The breakdown of funds are detailed under the "why kickstarter" header, under which its clear that I really only keep about $3,000 for myself, which I'm using to go at development for a full year. Nevermind that over a third of that is just to recuperate costs I've already spent on custom tilesets(celianna), script licenses and commission, artwork and illustration commissions, copyright, and so forth. I'm in a convenient situation where I don't have to pay rent for a year and a half, which also helps to keep the funding goal in check.
Hey, I just saw this featured on Kotaku! However, someone might want to quell the talk about this definitely using RTP assets (which I think I saw somewhere will be replaced if the Kickstarter raises enough). Sorry, I just didn't want to make a Kotaku account just to comment there...

Article is here

Oh, well, I suppose you stated in the trailer that you are using "placeholder graphics".
Wow Kotaku covered this? I remember someone quoting the official website saying you can't use RTP for paid releases. They've licensed the art, but that doesn't mean they were licensed to you. There are art houses in Korea that will do new sprites, tilesets and characters for $5,000 or 50% of your gross income. But I see you already have a team of people.

1 backer for $750 and the funding jumped by $6,000 in one day. Kudos. Looks like you'll make it and then some.

This is a perfect example of the worst kind of attitude to show in a creative community such as this.

I fail to see why you would complain about the engine choice at this point and direct it to a negative action, considering the project received its funding on the third day of the campaign and has several weeks funding left ahead of it, which means it has much potential to gather funding for original art assets and perhaps even an engine upgrade.

Could you potentially be any less constructive?

I just had to confirm this. Shaz, who is the sole moderator of the commercial games forum on the official RPG Maker Web site, which I'm going to link here:

"Any resource from any maker you own can be used in a commercial game, if that game is made with Enterbrain's products (so if you own XP and Ace, you can use XP resources in your Ace commercial game, as well as the Ace resources)."

So you pretty much can use the RTP in your game if you own the engine that the RTP belongs to.
