The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

Hope i'm not too late on the train, but downloaded it recently and really enjoying it for my standard jrpg grinding fix. But recently i spaced out on dialogue and i'm kinda lost on where to go to progress, any help would be appreciated.

My party consists of Ivy, Gainer, Yvette and Leif, after the events where i presume where my city will be built on. I believe i should be going to Logos-3
now but after some time searching there i got nothing. Explored some high level optional dungeons (castle north of arena, Eye of God crater...) and arena, but still can't find where to go

Keep up the great work, i'm a huge Jimmy fan too (:

Edit: Thanks for the reply, finally found out how to progress. Was looking for a game and this caught my attention, and to my surprise the same creator of Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass, one if not, my favorite rpg of all times. Any plans on a new game? Much love bro, and thanks for the great experiences!
It's been a long time since I made this, so I'm actually not 100% sure, but I think that you need to charter a ship in the little port town on the same continent as the place where your town will be built.

You're magical to me.

I haven't replayed this since I reviewed it, but I still look back at it fondly. Really great characters, interesting world, and the story really got to me. I should give it another play some time.
@rikuaaa777: Glad you like Jimmy and have been enjoying this old chestnut! I am currently working on another game and am gearing up to announce. I'm hoping that will be pretty soon.

@unity: I think that I made some pretty big quality of life improvements since you played it, so maybe it'll hold up okay. I saw some old footage of it, though, and, man, those maps are rough, haha.
I'm glad to know, can't wait for the big reveal (:

Took my time on all the side content, and now all that's left (i believe) is the expert arena rank B and A, final boss and
The Eater fight
. Also:

-
Should i treat The Eater as a kind of superboss and go for him later, or maybe on new game +? Or can i focus on taking him down before the final boss? Was just worried to be on such a high level that it kinda takes the fun outta the last boss

-Is the last Rare Crystal story-related or something? I currently have 11 of the 13 rare crystals, but only 12 of them are listed on the partial guide.

Sorry for the late reply, between the grind on this game, i gave The Heart Pumps Clay a try, and man, i really like your work, and musics! Also, everyday i still do a little grinding on Jimmy, wanna 100% it, currently leveling to 99 all forms (:

Hope everything stays cool there for you bud! And thanks for the great experiences.
Yeah, the boss in your second spoiler is a superboss; if you can beat it, the final boss will be a total joke. I honestly don't remember the rare crystals at all, haha. Maybe someone else can help you on that one, but I'm drawing a total blank.
Well, for the Rare Crystals, if some are in Chests, then the Chest Hint Guy would help track the last one down, perhaps. Do you know which ones you already got?
@Housekeeping Thanks for the reply, i'll try to finish the game then, and on a new game + i will deal with him (: . And don't worry, it's an old work of yours, with so much content that i would be surprised if you remembered it.

@Malandy You're right! Totally forgot about that guy. Do you know if chests respawn on a new game +? Or the ones that were open stay this way? Currently i have all of these:

1. Talk with Solomon after either getting Sylvia or deactivating her
2. Under the bridge at the beginning of the abandoned station on Logos-3.
3. In the saecelium mines, after heading to the end of the "four lever" mine cart puzzle
5. Beat Rank A of the Quiz Bowl in the Pig Arena in Alluvia
6. Hop off the right area at the top of the Tower of the Mother in the Temple of the Elder Gods
7. In the basement of Nightmare Castle.
8. Beat the second Nightmare Dimension course
9. In the Ruins of Old Avishun
10. Let Gretchen dig up the park twice.
11. Follow the directions to Treasure Map 5 in the snow field.
12. Walker will give you one after tracking him down.

From the partial guide, there's 12 of them, and the last one remaining to get is:
4. Beat Rank B of the expert arena in Terranoire

But the thing is, the guy who collects those Rare Crystals have slots for 13 of them. But you already gave me some hope, i'll ask Chest Hint Guy and try to collect them all!
Hmm, I wonder at "Let Gretchen dig up the park twice.", if she gives a Rare Crystal each time, but you did say that you did it already, right.
iirc, she gave an Elixir the first time. I'm just finishing some equipment crafting to try and beat expert arena, and then i'll start the hunt for the missing chests. But thanks a lot for all the help <3

Edit: just noted i haven't found the W key from the Wind Bandits, and there's still 3 chests on this map. Hoping this is it... but it wasn't, still on the look
For the childhood prision arc, is there any incentive to not fighting the optional boss. In particular,
can you still get his key and do you get something else
?

Yeah, Lorenzo's quite precise on how you get North Key without a fight, although it'll take a while as argh says here, and Lorenzo's implication:

I guess I'll just die in this stupid cell.
Any idea on how to get that chest on Path of Gods in Terasu? The one at the start, where after climbing some vines and going up, there are two separate rooms, the one you activate the orb and drops down the hole to progress, and this one containing the chest, and a vine to drop down there to collect it.

But how to get there? Still on the search for the last rare crystal, already cleared all of Avishuun chests, and this is the last one on Terasu. Still a long way to go, but we'll get there (:

Edit: Found it, you have to do the first puzzle normally, then after entering the door, activate the orb and go back one screen. On to Balfur we go.
What is the solution for the temple of god's first puzzle? I imput the directions in order, and relative to each other, but it does not work (and there is no north either way)
I remember this puzzle, but I don't know the solution offhand. I think there's a full playthrough on youtube, though, so you can probably scour that for the solution--it'd be towards the end of the playthrough.
I had to cross spikes so many times that Mint ran out of MP for healing, and I ran out of restorative items. A random encounter was able to easily finish me off and I'm too frustrated to continue for today.
