The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

Hey, Shadragon, remember to use the "hide" tag for major plot events. If you edit that post, let me know and I'll unhide your post. Also:
Yeah, I guess she did get a little emo--can you blame her though? She's probably not going to listen to My Chemical Romance, though.

@Xenos: Damn. Thanks for finding that transfer bug. The behemoth graphic you're talking about is one of the default VX battlers. I used default battlers for the most part, but I had to do a little bit of frankenspriting for story reasons (like putting wings on most of the humanoid battlers). Also:
Yeah, the love letter is one. The other thing is whether or not you befriended Luca in the hospital. You have to visit her as Ivy, come back with Mint, and then give her a daisy; she'll have a more positive outlook on life. This lets you access the treasures in her house earlier in the game. The missable items are Cupid's Bow, Amos's Book, Jr. Bandit's Badge, and, as Furipu mentioned, Mint's Cloak, which can be crafted into a pretty solid accessory (but it's not top tier, so if you missed it, don't worry).

The journal was talking about using the crystals to move through time, not space.
Hang on, I seem to have missed that one, myself...

I did visit Luca but didn't come back with a daisy, I think. What treasures would those be? But I guess I got them later since Griff can't find any...

EDIT: Nevermind, it's just been a while. I remember it now.
Almost done with the crafting I mentioned before... here's hoping it helps! xD
"lets you access the treasures in her house earlier in the game." earlier is still after timeskip, isn't it?

And yes, but they ARE also used to travel through space.
Finally managed to take down
The Mother. Her midway boost (spoiler moved below) was evil, evil design, but it sure kept me on my toes! xD Not too overpowered, mind you, just... tricky.
(nested spoiler moved here to avoid glitch)
the boost is double turns
Let's see what trouble I can stir up in the rest of that dungeon...

EDIT: Starting to hate the words "Give me your mana." - you really didn't pull any punches with that dungeon, Housekeeping... *laughs maniacally* excellent... I wouldn't have it any other way.
@Xenos:
Yep, it's still after the time skip. And, yeah, the crystals can be used to travel through space; the window bit was just referring to time travel.
Is it just me or do double spoilers work incorrectly?
You open it
And it says Show
while it's already open.
And Hide when it's already collapsed.
If true, than spoiler within a spoiler is even more spoilery.

Also, do SIlhouettes give 1000 exp each? Are they unlimited during the fight?
Fucking double spoilers. Well, I edited that out, haha.

The silhouettes do give 1000 xp a piece, but they're limited.
Wow, the next boss,
God
is really proving tough so far. Based on what I presume is the halfway boost, I'm consistently getting about 80% through his hp, but so far he's always overwhelmed me.

Would you mind checking my strategy for holes, Housekeeping?

Ivy is main damage via Shouted and Blessed Eviscerate, or V-Slashes if I can't muster the buffs at the moment.
Gainer is support, mainly through Phase Shifter and Aura, though he can get a few potshots (Snipe) in when things are under control.
Yvette is largely a healer, though I have her use Whispered Curse when possible, and sometimes even nuke a bit while meditated (Atomize or Gloom). Sometimes with Soul Engine too.
Leif is focusing on Shouting Ivy, Protecting the party, Poison Bombing new adds, and dispensing consumables as needed, and he has the Really, Really Fast Ring so he can bomb the adds in time. Regular attacks when "idle" to conserve mana.

Mostly I debuff and ignore the adds, because at later stages they appear faster than I can kill them without losing the focus on the boss himself. Troublemakers usually get Atomized in the early stages.

I'm not running out of consumables at all, and it feels like the stats I have should be enough, considering how far I get.

What seems to get me is when something oneshots Gainer (such as a Divine Judgement sneaked in between two Phase Shifters), and then he drains all of Yvette's mana as she tries to use Benediction, which then obviously fails.
More KOs quickly follow since one healer is KO and one without mana.
Should I completely rely on VIP Free Death Passes to compensate?
Also, notice: Rutger's eyepatch being on different eyes.

I'm wondering if there's some kind of collision detection issues with rpg maker on certain systems, as some people have had a lot of problems with the fire and boulder puzzles.
On the first stairs I had little problems. After that I actually remembered that boulders can't kill you - only down to 1HP - so on the last one I just slammed heroes into the second to last boulders, then next, then next, until they were grouped together in groups of 3-5 and it was easier to pass through.
Thank you for programming such a way possible)
@XenosHg
That's a little alarming - see how the line you quoted mentions a similar fire puzzle? That one won't let you use this tactic, and while possible, it's far less forgiving. No damage, but it teleports you when you're hit, most often to the start of the puzzle or near it.
Phew, just took down that boss I asked about earlier... What a rush! xD
EDIT: Ugh, doublepost, my bad...
Let's see when we get to it - and it's not that I couldn't possibly pass it (I don't really know, though) - I just crashed accidentally into a last boulder, moving it back, and the puzzle became more difficult, so I thought - why not make it easier the same way. It helped.
oh sh** sorry :) :D I forgot to .. LOL :) .... I did it already
and for turning emo perhaps she self harms and cut or something because of mint dying.... and yeah, cant blame her... i would probably feel the same if that was me, and id keep blaming myself for what happened, like I couldnt protect her, hard enough ... I wanted to tell her that I know the feels cause shes my fav character in this game... poor ivy :( ... and man I got surprised... has it really been thirty since like rutger said??... damn its that long already??...
and also.... it would be funny having an Chem Rom. background song reference for that scene hahahahah XD :D
Well, I see at least 1 obvious reason for having long hair - she's been alone in the caves for nobody knows how much time enough to forget how to speak. Also, the mute scene was hilarious.
-Wha.. cough, cough, blargh, bkhek, water.. ghe, grr.. WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?! oh, sorry.

Also, this universe doesn't react to age gaps much -
Gainer's best friend is Luca, at least 13 years older than him. Also, Ivy asks whether she had met Gainer.

Also, how do you read "Luca"? Lu\lyu\k\ts\ch?
I feel like jackie chan's uncle at times.

One more thing! In a bit of gotta-save-em-all, are there no quests regarding an illness at Mossvine before-skip?

Raccoon-Qn.Yvette dialog: irrelevent>irrelevant
Yvette's skill is written Judgment. Not sure about other instances.
@Furipu: There's actually a trick to that boss fight that would have helped:
Instead of killing the summoned mobs, you can cast eerie whistle and chances are you'll inflict a debilitating status effect.

Sorry I didn't catch your post sooner!

@Xenos: I pronounce it "Loo-ka." The illness in Mossvine will get addressed later in the game. "Judgment" is spelled that way in American English--it varies in UK English. I'll hunt down that other typo, though!

@Shadragon:

Well, no cutting, but she definitely takes it hard--you'll see that explored over the course of the game. And, yeah, it's been thirty years.

@Housekeeping:
Already managed to beat that one, though I used

Phase Shifter and Poison Bomb - if one doesn't get them, the other mostly will, and both practically negate all threat they posed. As a bonus, this left Yvette free to heal or nuke as needed.

However, the final boss of that temple sure is a tough one, even compared to the other two, already pretty crazy bosses - is that the hardest in the game? I got all the way to (and a fair deal past) his

second boost, which I assume are laid out roughly in the thirds of his hp? I ran out of VIP Free Death Passes there though, he makes me go through them like a madman.

But, well, let's just say I'll have to pay him another visit sometime.

EDIT: In the meantime, I revisited the arena, and beaten all the A's at last.
However,

my progress was halted by the succubus in expert B, round 3 for now. I guess I'll have to gear against sleep next time. Also, round 4 of expert C was quite the nasty surprise after what those two put me through each on their own, but it worked out ok! xD
Yeah, he's the hardest boss in the game. I wouldn't attempt him until you've got really solid gear--especially the reward for obtaining all of the Rare Crystals. Anything that protects against instant death/status effects is also welcome. And, yeah, that's his final boost, so you were pretty close to beating him, but that's when he's toughest.
Thanks for the Rare Crystal tip, I'll try that. Only missing one more crystal anyway, and its location is obvious by now, though getting it is another story. Might craft some of the more advanced accessories too, since I guess some of mine are pretty outdated by now.
A bit of a list:
1) Swamp runs slowly, sanctuary runs slowly sometimes, silent lake lower-left labyrinth lags horribly. I think it's because it is a giant labyrinth level that, like a swamp, has too many active (green) tiles, that do something as you step on them, because other mazes don't lag. Maybe you could break it into 16 smaller locations? Or nine, at least?
2)One Terranoire villager mentioneos "mountains filled with cole". Coal?
3) In silver springs a character questions BanditKing's plans for giving everyone jobs, using "put is", where should be "us", i think)
4)Lucas sends the party to Corna Lucis - Corona?
5)When Clovis sends to a forest east, it's actually west (west is left, right?)
6)The same with a sign near Dragon's Mouth.
7)Ancient man - men? I'm not sure.
8)Marina's tear: "fills you with confident" -dence?
9)Gaul's "ON tough bastard" instead of One is still there.
10)On a door in old balfur there is some phrase using a verb "question", but I think there is no question. Is it normal to use it like this?

Not a bug, bud is there a save point in Corona Lucis?
Was the "Ready? Debate!" joke from Yumina? Or Phoenix Wright?
Does Oliver have no fear challenge in logos-3?
And
What skill does Brunhilde teach? Is it necessary to finish Phobos' nightmare levels for it? I can't pass parallels at all, it's a shame to lose something useful due to a level that is nearly impossible even when you 1hitKO everything.
Thanks for the list! I'm not sure where number 7 is, though; based on the phrasing, it might be right. In number 10, "question" is being used correctly--it's being used similarly to "Don't question my resolve." I have fixed number 9, but I haven't uploaded the most current version; I was waiting for some more substantial changes first.

There's a save point in Corona Lucis, but it's in the temple area that you might not have access to. If you're wanting to have one for Nox's trial, there's a save point in that area.

The ready/debate joke was more of an in-game joke in that it was parallel to the coliseum (the joke being that the city council is like an arena). I'm not familiar with Yumina and I haven't played Phoenix Wright, but I can see how Phoenix Wright probably has something similar because of all those "Objection!" pictures I see.

I'm not sure what you're asking about Oliver.

Brunhilde teaches a holy-elemental physical attack and later a self buff, both of which are pretty good. You get a lot of good things from that mini-game, so it's worth doing, but it isn't required for beating the game. There is a bonus dungeon that's unlocked from it, though. Regardless of how quickly you kill stuff in the Nightmare Dimension levels, you've got to be able to dodge the majority of the fights. Parallels is one of the harder ones to fudge.

Edit: I can't find #3 either.
