The rope winds from the clouds like the long-dried trail of a giant's tear. It whips in the arid wind, down the birdless sky, and into the open mouth of the ravine that splits the dead land. Down and down it goes, the sky darkening to a pinpoint of light above it. This is the sky that Ivy knows.

Ivy and her sister, Mint, peer further into the ravine. It has been one day since their father stopped moving. A dandelion sprouts from the parched earth like hands clasped together in prayer. It is the only living thing they've seen in this dead world. A growl echoes off the cliff walls. Maybe not the only thing.

Sometimes Ivy dreams of a sky that covers everything. When she awakes, she hates herself for still having the dreams of a child. She's fourteen, now, her sister twelve. The rope stretches up above them, up, up, up, further than young eyes can see.

Major Update

I've been hinting here and there about wanting to update A Very Long Rope, and I finally got off my ass and did it. I made quite a few changes, and I'll list them below, but I want to talk about the most major one in depth. When I made A Very Long Rope, my goal was to make a game with a strong story, and a lot of the other aspects got brushed aside. This was going to be my way to segue into the community and hopefully find some other people interested in working together. Since then, I've shifted my perspective and focused more on things like design and aesthetics, which this game doesn't really care much about, unfortunately.

So, the update. The chief annoyance I've been hearing about A Very Long Rope is the dungeon design--mainly, levels are way too big, and the random encounters serve to make things worse. So, this update adds an item to your inventory that toggles enemy encounters. This item was available in the game before, but the only way to get it was to beat the game (players who have done this know I'm talking about the saecelium shield). Now, this item is given to the player at the very beginning, meaning you don't have to fight a single random encounter anymore.

Of course, since bosses exist, you'll still need to gain experience. In order to incentivize getting a good amount of experience before each boss, I've made several treasure chests need a currency called "victory points" in order to open them. Basically, you get a single victory point for every enemy you defeat in a battle (other than bosses). Victory points are dependent based on the dungeon, so the ones you earn in the first dungeon will only work in that dungeon. The cost of opening chests is higher depending on what's inside the chest, so you might need to spend between 2-6 points in order to open each of these special chests.

I've also doubled the experience, gold, and item drops from monsters. The net effect here is that if you open every single locked chest, you'll end up fighting about half of the encounters that you would have if you just left random encounters on. I did a full playthrough and felt that these locked chests provided short-term goals that kept me more interested while exploring; I hope they do that for you, too!

Here's the full list of changes:

-Reduced crit damage from triple to double
-Stat cap increased to 9999 (will mainly affect buff stacking)
-Berserk no longer sucks
-One-touch Sprint
-First agricultural upgrade requires three people instead of five.
-Escape rate now a flat 60%
-Added a way to get out of the Goddess Tower if you don't have a portable transceiver
-Fixed a few typos/graphical glitches/small things I don't remember
-Rare drop rates have been increased significantly
-Gold/XP/Drop Rates doubled
-Findable equipment that could be used in recipes is now sold as recipes in your town along with the regular recipes.
-Saecelium Shield now added at the beginning of the game. Players can use their old data and find a Saeclium Shield in a number of places within a blue chest (such as the entrance to your town, on the world map, or next to the save point in Old Town); the blue chests will disappear upon opening one.
-Most chests are now "locked." Gain Victory Points from defeating random mobs in a dungeon to open locked chests. Victory Points are specific to each dungeon.
-Locked chests are weighted based on how good the item is. 2 VP is a potion, 3 VP is gold, a good potion, or monster mats, 4 VP are great potions and large sums of gold, 5 VP are stat-boosting items or rare monster mats, 6 VP are equipment.
-Chests that aren't near easy grinding spots (e.g. chests in certain puzzles, chests in towns) will never be locked. Several other random chests in dungeons will also not be locked.
-Arena fights now give experience
-Can now use saecelium shield during soul tear scenes
-Only need to find the wolf four times instead of nine (what was I thinking?!) in Marina's soul tear scene.

That's it! Oh, and make sure to subscribe to my new project: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

3 is somewhere when S.S. jut opened, sadly I don't have saves this old..
7 is from the infodump section on anthropology in the %cityname%
Oliver - I mean, there's a section where characters
face their fears. Ivy, Rutger, Gainer, Yvette&Leif. Doesn't Oliver have one?

Also, in %city%, Moira first addresses Gainer as Gainer, instead of Gainsford. Is it character development?

Yumina is a Visual Novel-RPG with dialogs, dungeon crawling and a debate club who use technology to incorporate their arguments and psychic resolve into actual superweapons and superpowers - including hitting opponents with a tennis ball - turned into a star!
For a while, it feels like a chibi touhou fighting in school with cool animations, funny characters, and psychological literal warfare.
and then they bring out mecha-robots

and aliens

and a phantasy magical dimension

It's great, except for optional grinding.
Oh right, all these reports made me remember I encountered an odd bug some time ago:

I was just making my recruitment rounds and passed through the swamp, and something felt off.
I must've been out of it because I didn't figure it out for a few minutes, but I was stuck at the swamp speed, even outside the swamp.
Luckily re-entering and leaving a swamp tile fixed it.

If it helps, this happened after exiting the swamp at the north end, into the caves (not falling through, used the actual cave entrance).
@Xenos: Yeah, "ancient man" is right in that context. Oliver doesn't have a scene in that area, but there's a logical reason for it. Moira's dialogue there was an oversight--I'll fix it! Yumina sounds kind of interesting; I might have to check it out.

@Furipu: Thanks for catching that! I was able to find the gap in the events pretty quickly, so I'll make sure to patch that in the next update.
Hello. When i m seeing nox and go to the trial and beat both dark souls im just coming back to nox whos asking me if i want to take the trial.I was thinking i should take it later but now i cant move around with my character, ivy always got the back showed.Like shes going straight forwards all the time.If i try to talk to someone i must stand below the npc.Really crazy. Its hard to me to explain it in english but i hope you know what i mean. What should i do in the trial?I will take an earlier save now and skip the trial until someone answer me.Tell me and i can try to explain better.Thanks.
Oh, crap. I just spotted the glitch you're talking about. If you want to fix that quickly, just climb up or down a rope or ladder. Also:

In order to beat the trial, you have to make sure that Raccoon is still alive. Have you been doing that?

I've uploaded the newest version of the game. Basically, it fixes this glitch, the swamp glitch Furipu found, and a whole bunch of typos mainly found by Xenos.
Thanks Housekeeping.Im downloading now.
Alive?In that fight?Huh, how?Some spell
?.Im gonna take it later after some more grinding maybe gaining some new spell can make it easier. Thanks for answer.Great game!In my top 10-15 i think along with Phantasy star 2(the first rpg i played)and other old and some new classics..I enjoy big long games and this surely is .
@kenlan:
Hint:
By now you probably noticed that one dark soul attacks you, while the other one attacks Raccoon and heals both dark souls. They don't exchange these roles at any point, each just keeps doing its thing.
As Housekeeping said, you want Raccoon alive, but you obviously can't heal him. What does that leave?

Solution:
You have to prevent the damage the dark soul does to Raccoon, while not killing him yourself, and while not getting killed yourself. Raccoon can revive the dark souls if he's alive once you beat them, but you'll win if you last enough turns for his monologue to reach a certain point.
Focus on applying conditions on the dark soul that hurts Raccoon, so that it's forced to skip its turns. When it's safely disabled as such, optionally do the same for the other targets, heal yourself, or guard.
Thanks Furipu.It worked well.
With sweet dreams
Questions about soultears.I have looked at lets play and tried to find answers here but dont get it:Where is/ where to go:
magnus soultear/sweep and hurricane slash & glass' soul tear and emp generator - switch's soul tear,i think Switch told me something i forgot
And i hope im going to have some answers about odd things and treasures in the game soon because i dont understand that either now.
Ok, let's see...
The soul tears you asked about:

Magnus: found in your town's barracks, and he asks you to go to the warped surface area, where you saw Rutger's nightmare scene. The throne will be occupied by someone else this time.
Glass: found in the caves where you first entered Balfur (near the swamp), he's one of the ghosts. If I recall correctly, he asked you to kill a dragon? If that's the one, remember where you fought three baby dragons earlier? This time there will be an adult one.
Switch: found in the Nexus, she asks you for some raw Saecelium ore. There was a mine on the surface, where you passed through right after the time skip. Check the Saecelium crystal room where you fought the boss.

Not sure what you mean by odd things... Odd Lumber maybe? Those are crafting ingredients. As for treasures, or the contents of chests, they're generally unique items (unless it's a consumable or one specific ring), and I recommend not selling any, in case you need it for crafting later. Feel free to specify what you meant if I didn't answer right.
@kenlan: I missed your edit! I'm guessing that you're talking about those maps that Richmond sells. They give directions for things in the snowfield north of Lilledragen. Was there something specifically that isn't clear about them?
OH right, how could I forget those maps. I'd make sure you can beat the snowfield enemies easily, or even escape most of the time though - if you want to hunt down all the goodies, you'll have to do a lot of running.
Thanks.Got sweep now and
knights pendant is really nice
.Im gonna look after the other now.In one cave i remember there is alot of rocks/stones now but its maybe not there, gonna check around. All is clear now about richmonds maps,i didnt know where to look first but now im got it. EDIT:Where is Brunhilde?
Brunhilde is in her mansion in the rich part of Silver Spring - the one with a small hedge maze - check the top floor. I assume you want her soul tear quest? If so... good luck, it's rather different from the rest.

As for me, I haven't been playing much lately, though I still skulk this thread from time to time, but there's something that's bugging me. Being stuck on some of the bonus bosses, I decided to craft something that'd help, but I'm starting to wonder if I'm even farming the right enemies:
Red Claws for a Fire Dragon's Skull
Behemoths for an Unstoppable Beast's Horn
both found near the top of the Space Elevator

I don't know any other enemies that might drop those, and yet I have yet to see one drop after roughly two hours of farming just those two enemies, escaping from the rest to save time. Could someone please confirm if I have the right place? Or perhaps an alternative source I may have missed?
Yeah, those are the mobs; they have a 1/35 chance of dropping those, which may be more trouble than its worth depending on what you're looking to craft. I believe that one or both of those items can be obtained from chests, so you might want to make sure that you've consulted Griff.
Thanks for the reply, but i got the ones from chests - I'm looking for a second one of each though, so I guess farming is the only option, barring a new game plus. I'm trying to craft some armor to give everyone some dark resist, to better survive the Phantom Storms which've been tearing me apart whenever the buff/debuff situation gets out of hand for a bit.

EDIT: Also to confirm my claim, Griff can't find any more chests, anywhere. Hunting them down is pretty trivial once you finish the story, thanks to Griff and the
Saecelium Shield.
Hello. Now i start to have serious troubles and have checked Mizushimi s excellent lets play and the forum but cant recruit /find some(things)that i belive i should now:
IM in Balfur with Oliver and just destroyed 4 crystals and now trying to beat Rutger but just dies (14 tries so far)thats were i am ,so i went back to fix some things,i cant reqruit Babette, dont find any Griff in pub in Avishun,Miranda doesnt want to join, cant find Deidre or Gretchen (park wanderers?whitch park? )old lady on second floor, Esther, dont follows and wheres the tree bending stick?I have no expansions left to buy and they say i miss 1 to commercial district,2 to art and entertainment,3 to abrucultural,: .35 people i think i have now.And final: how to find the blood orcs over the village?
Many maybe hard questions but i hope someone can answer some. This games is really big and complicated but often more challenging than frustrating but
nightmare dimensions are "puzzels" on time and i just cant do it,i have been trying 30 times or so on nr 3 and..no,just to give up.( some seconds left and the enemy starts to talk!!!and times run away, laugh or cry?take away that from the game, what are the point?Frustrating to lose.
.like 65 hours now, hahaha i take my time.
Whew, you've asked quite a bit! Hopefully I can answer everything:

-Babette, Esther, and Miranda will only join you after you have expanded your commercial district all the way.
-Griff is in the jail in Avishun castle; he stays at the pub in your town after you recruit him.
-Diedre and Gretchen are in the orphanage in Avishun. If you go right when you first enter the city, the orphanage is the bigger house towards the bottom of that screen. Gretchen's hiding behind some boxes there.
-The tree-bending stick can be found by checking the tree in your mom's old cell in Avishun dungeon.
-The blood orcs are in the eastern area of Snow Wolves' Pass. Basically, go north from the Bandit King's camp.
-The Nightmare Dimension can be pretty tough for some people, but the stronger you are, the easier it is. You should be able to finish the one you're on by this point, but if you get further in the game, you'll have access to more skills that'll make it easier (you'll be able to finish that guy off before he gets a chance to talk).

Hope that helps!
Thanks. Now i should get it right. And thanks for the notes about
nightmare dimensions ,you should know im getting so frustrated when hes starting to talk.Im at level 52 now
.Great game i hope your next will be in same size more or less.
The game I'm working on now's going to be a pretty big one--probably not quite this size, but it'll be way, way more polished--I'll try to get a game page up for it before the end of the year. It's going to be a while before it's released, though, so I might end up doing a contest or two in the mean time, which means that the next game that actually gets released will probably be pretty short. Glad you're enjoying this one!
Hm, level 52 sounds like it should be enough to beat that third level, so let's see...
There's one skill that really helped me there, and I think you've already got it:
Gainer's skill EMP Generator, learned from Switch for her quest. I'd make sure Gainer is faster than the chatty fellow (which he probably already is), but if you get a good paralysis hit, he won't get a chance to talk even if you take a few rounds to take him down.

EDIT: Sounds interesting, Housekeeping, but you don't seem to mention - same genre as AVLRttTotS? Just curious of course, feel free to keep it as a surprise if you prefer. ^^
As for more polish... I'll admit that AVLRttTotS has had some glitches or typos, but they've been such a drop in the ocean that I never paid much attention to them. The story is wonderful and the characters simply lovable. All in all, I'd say you set the bar plenty high already! xD
