Character Sprites - Cute or 'Realistic'?

Hello there, guys! I've got another question for you - and this time it involves the artistic side of the game. There are a lot of different styles for horror games. Especially RPG Maker horror games. A lot of them are cute, some are a bit more realistic when it comes to sprites. Others are just plain weird. I like to keep away from the plain weird ones, but the choice between realistic and cute is still there, nothing is finally decided just yet.

So, why the sudden blog entry about sprites when I used the more realistic ones up until now? Because my artist just send me a sprite sheet for Hisao - he told me he could need the practice in pixel art and that he would gladly help me with the sprites. Which is wonderful, since that takes a lot of pressure away from me. We have different styles, though.

So, have a comparison picture:

Left side - LunaElto: Here you can see LunaElto's sprite of Hisao. It's cute, it's cuddly. Needs a final few changes to not clash with the tiles so much, but...it's so darn adorable. And, in a way, it all really fits. But then you realise that the game features gory elements, deaths and just straight up not so nice things. Do you think a chibi-like sprite would take some of the atmosphere away from the game?

Right side - Schwer-von-Begriff: That's my sprite of Hisao, as you already know. I use rips of a game that I can't remember the name of right now as a base - and then I change more or less everything that once was the base. I just need the basic walk animation, that's all. The walking animation isn't as smooth as the one from LunaElto, but the sprite is a lot more realistic. Can you live with a walking animation that seems a bit robotic in exchange for more realistic graphics?

What kind of sprite do you prefer?

I'm gonna go with choice number one.
Hell yeah!

No offense...

Despite of the style it has, it will look good in a sinister ambientation.
@JJJ7: No, no, I really like the cute style as well! A lot more than my own sprites, to be honest. Or, I should rather say that I find them a lot more adorable. I just heard very, very often that people do not like cute sprites in a gory horror game, that's why I would like to give you guys the choice to determine which art style makes it into the game. =)
@TungerManU: Yes, Hisao is a boy. Although he's a rather boy-ish boy. Not a huge manly man dude. Yeah, they definitely need some more work put into them. My own sprite needs better shading, especially the shoes seem a bit too clunky. LunaElto's sprites need a bit more shading and stuff so that it fits together with the tiles. Man, that's one tough decision.
I think I prefer the cuter anime style :3 (the one on the left)
I like the cute style too. And I don't think it clashes all that much with the tileset, personally. Just have the white highlights toned down and blended a bit more, and it'll look great.
The cute style really speaks to me.
unity
You're magical to me.

I honestly can't decide. They both have their good points! While I admit that the more realistic one fits the tone, the cuter one has a closer style to the art.

Sorry to be unhelpful, but I can't pick one over the other ^^;;
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't know enough about where your game is headed to decide which style suits your game better, but whoever drew the big-headed sprite has a little better grasp on shading.

Though I can't tell what the purple thing is supposed to be. In the original sprite it looks like a design on his sweater, but in the big-headed sprite it looks like a giant purple frog head that's been surgically attached to his abdomen.

I just wanted to thank all of you for helping me. We decided for the cute style. It also looks a lot better now. :)
