Version 1.2.1 added

Nothing really major was changed; I just wanted to make a few tweaks after replaying this game for the first time in 18 months!

- Fixed a bunch of the name typos (Terrence > Terence)
- Natalie's BP attacks hit harder now!
- Nerfed a few enemies. Buffed the final boss.
- Moved a few of the hidden treasure chests out in the open. Not everyone has eyes like a hawk, after all!

I might do a deep dive at some point and fix up a lot of the writing even further. We'll see!

RM Venture post-mortem

Hi, all!

The contest is over and Terrence's Tribulations received one badge for the aesthetics, which is was what I was aiming for because my time was limited and mapping is probably the one thing I'm happiest about with my performances. The gameplay was considered too challenging (and this is totally right, especially in version 1.0) and the story was considered unpolished and under-performing (again, very true and perhaps I should revisit this to polish it up...though I'm kinda still happy about the ending regardless). And, really, I didn't go for atmosphere at all, so that's understandable.

Thanks to everyone for playing and for Gourd/Liberty/Ocean for judging and putting up with the somewhat rushed nature of version 1.0!

Also, I posted the game on Steam Workshop. Just cuz.

Also, thanks to those who submitted reviews and provided feedback. Every bit of feedback will help me make my next work even better!

Miscellaneous

Version 1.2 is live

Hey guys. I updated the download with Version 1.2 to address some issues that people have mentioned.

Changes:

- Many enemies drop more gold now, including the early slimes.
- Cerberus drops much more experience.
- Both types of heal slimes have had their healing nerfed by 20-30 percent.
- Fire slimes early on deal about 25 percent less damage.
- Most enemies will no longer evade your attacks.
- Blank signs removed. Freezing Fist description fixed.
- Channel now regains 1 MP (and 1 BP as mentioned).

Hopefully this helps make the game more tolerable :)

Game Design

Too hard?

Is this game too hard? I am getting the feeling that it is, but I'm looking for some feedback :(

And is it exactly an hour like I planned?

I didn't have any other testers before release, after all.

It's done!

I had a BLAST making this game. Like, seriously.

First and foremost, the story is way out of my comfort zone in that it is both lighthearted and, well, romantic in a sense (though more bromance than anything else). There are yaoi undertones. (I'm straight BTW.)

This game is reasonably challenging, though there are plenty of exploits. It hasn't been tested into the ground (I made the game in about 18 hours and had ~2 hours of playtesting). There may be bugs - feel free to let me know.

I'm kinda happy with the maps in this one, despite being RTP. They took about 4 hours to make in total.

There is some optional content: 10 medals to find throughout the world, as well as 2 optional bosses.

Level cap is 20. It's not too hard to hit this, either. The superhard optional boss can be beaten past level 16 (in theory). Level 17 is good for the final boss.

The game takes about 50-80 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and the amount of side battles/exploring you do. It's a fairly compact game. My playthroughs were pretty much right at 1 hour, and I did everything except the super boss (he'll take 5-6 minutes, easily).

There are quite a few strategies in play here, and it was fun to sort of build a skill pallette for each character and just let the chips fall how they may. Terrence/Terence is both a tank and a healer, with other ancillary skills at his disposal. Natalie is quite the wild card. Her main mechanic is Blast Points: you charge them up and then spend them on elemental attacks and stuff. Some enemies have high magic defense but elemental weaknesses that she can exploit with her physical elemental fist skills. Beware, though - should you decide to use her counterattack ability and Terrence's provoke spell to make a sort of pseudo-tank, she will run the risk of dying quickly - and if provoke lasts beyond her counterattack, well you're screwed.

Noah is straightforward - he's a mage. His TP skills can be useful in conjunction with Terrence's provoke spell (e.g. Reflect) or good against enemies with no elemental weaknesses (e.g. Blast and Doomsday).

Eric's berserk ability is a beast, but he'll be a glass cannon and uncontrollable during it. He has some Holy spells at his disposal, but for them to reach peak usefulness later on you'll need to feed him Magic Ups.
