Been plugging away at this steadily, and it is shaping up pretty nicely. Given the restricted 1 hour time frame that I'm giving this game, I can do quite a bit and it gives me more freedom to do things that are otherwise impossible to attempt on a large-scale game.
Like those on-screen animated battlers. Thank you, PSIV, for reference. XD And you just can't go wrong wearing a badass longcoat.
I know I mentioned in the features list that this game will feature a midi soundtrack, but even though I'm going retro, I don't want to have to sacrifice sound quality just to give the game an 'old-school vibe'. And I've been wanting to use the royalty-free techno-style custom music that I got ages ago for a while now. ^^
And I've got rid of the mouse system entirely. Not because I didn't like it (
I found it pretty neat to click on any area on the map and Ayla would just walk there XD ) but because it was creating havoc with the menu screens. Ayla herself is pretty different from Tristian and Laine in terms of personality; fun to be around, she has a happy-go-lucky demeanour without being too Genki about it, compared to the super serious female leads of my two previous games.
As for graphics, around 95% of all assets are mine, except for some placeholder default 'character tiles', like the rocks in the below screen and that floating grass.
Mechas so far.
But all the tiles, facesets, battlers, backgrounds etc. are mine. I'm pretty chuffed at the way they came out. I only have about 10 mins of gameplay done so far, but I might put up a video just to showcase some stuff. After all, it works much better than a couple of screens (
actually, I just need to get this blog post up and upload two media submissions to get exactly 3K MS ). Bonus is that this game will probably be less than 40mb when it's released. Yay for pixel resources! >:D
Here's to a successful January release! And thanks to all of you who wished me on my b'day. You guys rock. <3
