Sellsword is a semi-traditional, comedic RPG entry to the Golden Week of RPG Maker 2003 event. The goal in mind is to make a game using strictly Rm2k RTP assets.

Join three inept mercenaries: Riley the Bard, Paris the Mage, and Gunnar the Drunken Brawler on a crazy adventure of fame, glory, and bizzare circumstances! Fight your way against spooky zombies, obnoxious spiders, and absurdly rude Mermen on a quest to retrieve the three fossil artifacts of the legendary dragon, Behemaut!

... I don't know whether I should think you are all crazy or not, but to those who did vote for this project, thank you. :')

You get to kill obnoxious spiders? I'm in!

Seriously though, humour games are hard but it looks like sarcasm is one of your main weapons here so I'm cautiously optimistic.

If it's anything like Are Pee Gee Maekur Vee Ex Ayce then I'm sold.

If it's not, then I'm sold.

Edit: Either way, I'm sold.

It's a more serious game in that more attention is focused on the gameplay, but it's also not serious in that the plot and encounters are full of nonsense that's kind of being made up on the go.

Anyway, I'm doing some testing/polishing right now and I might be able to finish by tonight!

Well, I've completed a Let's Play for this game. Though, I'll spare people the need to scroll past three videos by only linking to the first part.

I am so amazed by how quickly you could blitz through the battles. Do I just suck at RPGs by comparison? Thanks for the LP, though! What were your overall thoughts on the game?

In other news, I just put up a guide to the game to give everyone an understanding about the states, items, character stats and whatnot. Take a look!

Totally. I'm having to grind through the second dungeon again. I'll take a look at the guide, though.

Edit:
Spoilers.
I will probably mention this in my review, but I love how the Tabby Traveler can visit you twice and say the same story as if we hadn't heard it before. ;)

Edit #2:
WHOA I just had two Tabby Travelers in a row, I am a living lucky charm.

Thank YOU! I'm glad you liked it!

@Cashmere:
The Tabby Travelers only have three possible stories to tell, and they all have a 50/50 chance of appearing, so yeah repeats do happen. I definitely should have added more tales or at least put in a check to make sure the same story doesn't repeat two times in a row, but yeah I was kind of rushing to get this game finished. :P

A side note: If you are having some difficulty, just remember that Mana restoring items are actually more important than healing items in this game, because your main healer is dependent on it as a resource and can't regenerate it like Paris can, and ultimately when you exhaust your resources, you'd at least have some back-up mana to use skills to recharge your party.

Yeah, I'm up to the final boss in the game, but a few tips that I learned throughout playing were as follows...

DA TIPS
  • Avoid reviving heroes in battle. Wait until the battle ends, then the hero will come back to life with 1 HP, then heal them. Phoenix downs are expensive!
  • Try to do as much damage as possible. Keep in mind that spells are stronger against some enemies than others!
  • Use Paris' "Meditate" skill to completely heal your MP between encounters!
  • If you're stuck, try grinding near the entrance of a stage, and then exiting the stage through the entrance to heal, then coming back again. I know, it's a bit cheap, but if it works, it works.
  • "Goodwill Song I" is overpowered, it only costs 3 mana but it heals the entire party of 10HP. Save Riley's MP for this special spell. Riley's 0-cost attack is actually not that weak. It still does 10 damage, so use that as Riley's default attack.
  • For Paris, just save up for the strongest attack: Thunder II if there's 1 enemy, Fire Wave II if there's 2 or more. If you don't have enough MP at the time, meditate.
  • Antidotes are USELESS. I repeat, USELESS. Well, maybe not completely useless but I did end up racking up about 13 of them throughout the game. And to think those were the first thing I bought! More useful are HP/MP healing items. The NPC in the first tavern tells you to stack up on antidotes. He is WRONG. Wrong, I say. It is probably the least useful item in the game.

So... hopefully, those tips will be useful to somebody playing this game. :P

I only got one my entire playthrough, but it was a pleasant surprise ^_^ I really liked the neat, Earthbound-esce special enemy events like that.

A very nice list of tips! For Paris, I wanted to mention that I also found Thunder I very useful for its defense-lowering quality
Finished, it's pretty good, although the random battles started to get annoying near the end, but it was fun and nice game, 3.1/5
The scorpions and alot of stuff in this game needs to be nerfed to be honest.
Salaskorcher also needs to be nerfed. Had full health and def buff on kills my party in 1 hit. That's pretty annoying and on top of that you can't escape him.

Salaskorcher is the kind of enemy that needs to be killed as quickly as possible, as it gets stronger the lower HP it has.

... Which now that I think about it is pretty lousy enemy design on my end. I might rework it.
Nice game.Very enjoyable.Hope to see more.
Why isn't there any attack command in this game
