Character Introduction - Unit 3-60

Unit 3-60 - Digital Buffer

This one will be brief (/giggle). Eight years ago, Doctor Benjamin Yacht created a piece of life-altering technology: artificial intelligence. He kept his work secret until eventually confiding in his, then, friend and co-worker, Doctor Philippa. At first, they proceeded with business as usual and everything was fine. But Doctor Philippa is an idealist. She's an innovator. She's ruthless. She wanted to reap all of the advantages that her friend's work brought and to create a series of supercomputers that would benefit Echo Labs Incorporated for decades to come. Seeing the fault in such a thing, Doctor Yacht disallowed it and deleted his work - but not before using some of its potential to create an AI. No, it wasn't this one. It was a different one named Unit 9-30. But it's important to know which came first. Knowing his betrayal would be the death of him, Doctor Yacht uploaded a section of his memories into Unit 9-30 and set out to create a separate AI. Yes, this one. The one aptly named Unit 3-60. Move the 3, turn the 9 upside down, move the 0. Simple, really. With both AIs online, he uploaded the second half of his memories into Unit 3-60, which became his personal companion. That brings us to current day.

Current day, 2012. Unit 3-60 works alongside her companion Doctor Yacht. They do everything together. Well, not everything. This isn't a game about that. But it's important to understand the bond these two share. It goes beyond physical or emotional - it is digital. It shatters realities and obliterates conventional meanings. You may notice a pattern, in fact, forming throughout these little character introductions. Bonds of friendship and love are common themes. Anyway, to wrap this brief introduction up, I'll just say that Unit 3-60 is possibly the Samwise Gamgee of Heartfire: A Born Again Saga. She doesn't get the most lines, but she has the largest impact.

Combat:
Obviously, having an AI companion during combat recalculates the odds in your favor. I mean, look at her. She's nearly bullet-proof. What would a bandit's sword or a mage's fireball do against that? Nothing. But Unit 3-60 isn't invincible. She doesn't have a constantly rejuvenating pool of magic like the others, so when she's out, she's out. Use her sparingly, when she's accompanying you. Use her to one-shot enemies with low HP, use her buffs/debuffs more than anything else. Think of her as a vendor who follows you into combat, constantly handing out buffs and debuffs to allies and enemies.

TL;DR
Unit 3-60 is one of two AIs who hold Doctor Yacht's memories. She's pivotal to the story; possibly the most important. In combat, think of her as a buff/debuff vendor. That's immune to everything.

Character Introduction - Hayatemaru

Hayatemaru

Hayatemaru was born on an unknown group of islands off the coast of an unknown landmass. Truly, no one knows where he - or his distinct race of upright wolves - comes from. But most experts agree it's no where within the Kingdom of Maine. What is known, sparsely, is that Hayatemaru is a member of a rare species of wolves that have evolved into humanoid-like creatures and have very strict cultural traditions and follow a demanding code of honor. His father's a famous warrior from where he's from. However, nothing can be said of his mother. Mainly because Hayatemaru has no idea who his mother really is. You see, Hayatemaru's father broke one of the most sacred commandments his people have - infidelity. He fathered a bastard son, and Aykuu Law dictates the two must be separated. Specifically, the bastard has to be sent into exile. And so Hayatemaru was placed aboard a ship bound for the Kingdom of Maine, and he hasn't been back home since. In Maine, Hayatemaru had little choice but to fend for himself in the streets of one of the poorest districts of Anaheim, Maine: Fleafoot Hill. There, he learned how to steal, pick locks, and move from street to street largely unseen. It wasn't until he took a caravan some many, many years later to Ithaca - to escape the authorities - that he met Dilara and Aldo.

Today, Hayatemaru tags along from adventure to adventure, lightening the mood and providing some much-needed comedic relief when things become a little too hairy. He's a renown "player," having laid with nearly every whore from Lazarus to Heartfire when he was younger. Despite the comedic front he puts up, deep down Hayatemaru is instilled with the same traditions and codes that his people have evolved into. It's a hereditary sense of justice, honor, and generosity that subtlety shows when he leaves the decision-making up to Aldo. He knows he'll always do what's best, what's right. In return, Hayatemaru is fiercely protective of Aldo, and even Dilara, although she's hardly in need of it.

Combat:
Hayatemaru thrives the most in combat out of any other party member. He's quick, agile, and remarkably accurate. In the time it takes an opponent to react, there's a good chance he's already hit twice. His racial ability allows him to regenerate health quicker than the others, an advantage that can be a deciding factor in battle if used correctly. Hayatemaru's natural toughness means he won't go down easily, either. But it's not recommended that he takes too many hits. He's not as bulky as Gustaf.

TL;DR:
Nothing's really known about his birthplace or people. He's a "player" and comedian with a few added layers who really kicks ass in combat if kept out of too much trouble. He's loyal to Aldo and Dilara.

Character Introduction - Dilara

Dilara - Sorceress

Dilara was born in the snowy town of Ithaca in the White Mountains - a massive mountain range that spreads from the Caspian Sea to Teach's Bay. Her parents were respectable, renown archaeologists, making their fortune by discovering ancient ruins that were left behind by early elven settlers. She didn't have much of a youth since her parents were always bringing her along to their excavation camps, but Dilara never really took to her parent's profession. Realizing their daughter's true passion was the arcane arts, they sent her to study beneath Madam Celeste at the Academy for the Arcane. She quickly became the Academy's star pupil, remarkably talented, popular, and well-liked. It's here she met a young boy, who seemingly had no gifts for the arcane, named Aldo. They quickly became friends and she stood up to those who bullied him. As Dilara grew out of her teenage years, she became close to the Madam and fell in love with her. Although affectionate, the bond between them didn't last very long. Celeste placed the good of the Academy and that of her students above Dilara, causing her to feel scorned.

Today, Dilara is still the brightest, most popular student at the Academy. Although no longer an apprentice by any means, she has a lot yet to learn. Rejection, however, has made her icy. She admires Aldo's morality but isn't as caring or kind. She would sooner leave a man or woman to freeze in the cold if it meant her own survival. One wonders how Aldo became the young man he is today with a mentor whose moral compass is so conflicted. Still, they remain close and best friends and she would sacrifice for him things she wouldn't for any other. Her one rival at the Academy is a woman named Isabelle who's determined to prove she's better than Dilara.

Combat:
In combat, Dilara hits hard. She's vulnerable to physical attacks but highly resistant to every form of magic. Her heritage grants her a unique ability that allows her to instantly recharge her magic. She's best used against tougher opponents who're weak to magic. As powerful as Dilara is, however, without Aldo or Hayatemaru to back her up, she'll go down fast and hard. Make sure she's well-protected to take advantage of her magical prowess.

TL;DR:
Dilara is an icy (distant, aloof) sorceress who's Aldo's mentor, best friend, and sister-like figure. She's the brightest student at the Academy and shares a rivalry with Isabelle, the self-proclaimed second brightest.

Character Introduction - Aldo

Aldo - Adventurer

Aldo was born somewhere in the woods of the White Mountains. Rumor has it that his parents were members of a traveling troupe and he was conceived one particularly chilly night. Nine months later, he was left on the steps of the Academy of the Arcane in Ithaca. Madam Celeste, a powerful sorceress who founded the Academy, took him in and attempted to teach him the ways of a mage. Unfortunately, he never took to the training. He refused to sit in a lecture hall from day to day, opting instead to explore the wilderness around Ithaca. When he was older, around six, he met another young girl at the Academy who had just recently been sent there by her parents to study as an apprentice. Her name was Dilara, and she and Aldo quickly formed an unbreakable friendship. Throughout his childhood, and much of her teenage years, they were inseparable. She became a role-model for him, a big sister who was always there for her little brother.

That was approx. ten years ago. Today, Aldo and Dilara are still the greatest of friends. Aldo, although young, has a talent for swordplay and boasts a very special form of gentleness that's not found just anywhere. He's kind, generous, always looking to do what's right - not what's simple or quick. It's not in Aldo's character to take rewards for good deeds, and he wouldn't walk away from someone who needed his help. He isn't perfect; Aldo relies heavily on Dilara to guide him, despite his strong moral compass. Simply put, there are times when Aldo is surprised, dazed, or even startled by a situation. But there comes a point in every boy's life where something, or someone, comes along and molds him into a man. The type of man Aldo becomes is largely left up to you.

Combat:
In combat, Aldo specializes in swordplay. He's quick, agile, and accurate. His training comes from an unlikely source: Dilara. Although a sorceress like Madam Celeste, she has a unique taste for the art of swordplay that she shares daily with Aldo. He carries a large sword that was given to him by Dilara, his best friend. Where she found it, she refuses to say. But there's something specific within Aldo that she admires, and she believes, that if nurtured correctly by her, he will transform into one of the world's greatest fighters. By no means is he meant to take the brute force of an attack. Aldo's meant to dispatch enemies quickly, perhaps targeting weaker foes while Dilara focuses on the stronger, more deadly ones.

TL;DR:
Aldo's an adventurous boy who's gentle yet deadly with a sword. He relies heavily on Dilara, quite possibly the closest thing he has to a family, to guide him through certain situations.
