Dream Eater is a blend of horror and fantasy (Think OFF or Sunless Sea.) set in the dream world of a modern day child - a child that is played by you. In the morning, you wake up, you go to school, you live an average life. At night, you sleep, and you dream of monsters and magic, of another world.

But this dream world is corrupted, eaten away by a nightmare, and you must escape before you are devoured.

Gameplay wise, Dream Eater is a narrative-focused adventure and puzzle game punctuated by the occasional social battle. The game will have two main characters, and some puzzles will require you to switch between them in order to proceed. The game will contain themes of depression, anxiety, death, and suicide. It will also contain swearing and implied gore. It will NOT contain any serious sexual themes. Please be cautious if you're sensitive to these things!

Quick Update

Okay, so… I guess I’m putting out the demo tomorrow.

I made a whole lengthy note about it already on my Tumblr, but I figured I'd update here, too, even if I'm not as active here. I'll try to have it posted tomorrow, but if for whatever reason I can't get it to upload to RMN, I'll make another blog post containing the link.

Also - I know I'm pretty quiet here on RMN. I suppose I'm a bit afraid of spamming or just... to be frank, I'm not entirely certain what to do with this page, besides tack my game onto it when it's finished. Anyway, if you'd like more regular updates on things, I'm more active on my Tumblr than anywhere else.

Very mesmerizing, best of luck!
Loving the art direction for this game. You've really nailed that kinda surreal, dreamy vibe - especially with the character artworks.
Hey this looks nice and comfortable, very promising as well!
Seen this around Tumblr, looks great. Subbed! good luck with development

I misread it as Dear Esther every single time.
Sound interesting, can't wait to play it! xD
Comparing to your drawn-out character design vs sprite-based design, the latter looks like she is regarding everything with an annoyed glare - not something that fits a little kid. The eyes might be done better somehow.
I really adore the style you created there. The graphics are very well done and your sound and music also fit very well and create an eerie atmosphere.

I'm not sure if this is a bug... but... wait... I put it in a spoiler xD

In the room, where you have to steal the colored yarn. If the statue is inside the room there seems to be no way to get rid of it anymore. Therefore you can't steal the thread and can't(?) proceed. - I loaded my last save and hurried to get it. The choice to steal something appears twice. :D

Minor things:
If you activate the wooden key, it changes it's graphic (direction fix missing?) The same happens by activating the second dream journal :3

The dialogue system is amazing! I really like that.

And then I reach the ending ;______;
Really looking forward to play the rest of the game. I'm absolutely hooked! :3

I got some pretty weird bugs with taking the thread too. One is game breaking.

Like Lucy_Fox said,
the yes/no option to take something appears twice if you have to play the radio twice because you didn't get all the yarn in one try.

I had the music playing when I entered the thread room for the first time so maybe some switch didn't get flipped or was flipped out of order.

A game-breaking glitch happened when the guard came back while I was stealing thread for the third time. It just sits on a black screen. The game is still running and I can still bring up menus, leading me to believe that a Fade In is missing. I had to reload my save.

EDIT: Oops. I went and got coffee before posting this and forgot that I wasn't done writing yet. I made the bug happen again and you can fix it by stumbling around until you leave the room. So if any of you get a black screen, leave the room.

EDIT2: That didn't take long. In the room with the loom there's a 2nd bad glitch. If you check the loom but aren't ready to weave anything yet, you're stuck in the YES/NO selection unless you pick YES. Hitting X doesn't even cancel out, it accepts. So you're weaving whether you want to or not. Pressing X even makes a different sound but you're still stuck in the menu.

EDIT3: If you get stuck on this part of the stairs, go down, not forward. http://i.imgur.com/jMSLOBu.png

EDIT4: Another game breaking bug. If you have your panacea and you access the purple guy from above, you can't progress.

EDIT5: After you deal with the purple guy, the statue on the lower right looks like it's not blocking your path anymore but you still can't pass. You need to go around through the window again. But exiting left through the loom room at this point puts you in the old state of the main hallway, not the updated one.

EDIT6: And I'm stuck after that part. The door is clearly open but I can't enter and using action on it makes the same sound as when it was closed (which sounds more like an opening door but meh, whatever).

Dude, Demo and Beta mean different things. I was really hyped for this. It looked totally awesome. Now I'm royally pissed. If it's an open beta, CALL IT AN OPEN BETA! If it's a demo, make sure somebody actually played it first. Lots of people here will test your game completely for free just to help out or just to get the chance to play it first.

The guard is supposed to come back after a short period. If it's a bother, I can take it out, but that's not quite a glitch.

Anyway, thank you for your feedback!

I'm sorry for the trouble you've been having :\ All I can really say is that is wasn't an open beta - I had several people bug test it before posting the demo, and all of them made it through without trouble. I was afraid there were things they didn't catch though. I'm very sorry for the trouble!

On the glitches themselves - I'm having trouble recreating the guard glitch. Did it come back while you were in the menu?

The issue with the loom menu has been solved.

The double menu thing has been solved.

The bug with accessing the guy from above has been fixed.

The broken statue still blocking your path isn't a bug. It's broken, but still a physical object blocking your way.

The bug with the door has been fixed.

Thank you for the feedback, though. I'm really sorry it was buggy - that probably sounds insincere, but there's not a whole lot else I can say... If I can make it up, let me know.

Oh, no it's my fault I guess. I haven't thought of luring him away with the music. Maybe you could find a way to tell the player more precisely that this is a thing. :3

Ah, one thing: Do the dream journals actually serve a special purpose? It's possible to save at any time so I wondered...

Don't worry too much about some bugs. ;D You can test a game thousand times and someone will still find game breakers. xD
Keep up the good work :3
