[Fun] Worldbuilding 101: Building Tycho
Veriag
Veriag is a city in the southern extreme of the Embrian territory of Xeitas, on the edge of the Great Market Road which leads from the capital of the empire to Ferien.
Veriag is also the name of the plains that surround it.
It is one of the largest cities in that territory at over 100,000 inhabitants. It has an agricultural economy based principally in cattle ranching and raising crops. The city is also a regional commercial center, serving approximately 12 municipalities. The city had its origin as a crossroads, and has always maintained its character as a place that draws entrepreneurs from other regions. Major expansion of industry in the area, combined with the growth of tobacco plantations, has adversely impacted small-scale agriculture in the surrounding rural areas, resulting in declining population in those rural areas. Veriag also has a busy commercial district and the economy has devoleped a lot lately thanks to the migration of the population from all the surrounding towns.
It has been said that since ancient times, the Embrian kings always demanded the finest tobacco from the farmers of Veriag, as such, a yearly festival of tobacco is held to determine which plantation had the best crop that year. It is also considered a strategic location, and great measures have always been taken to protect it from other empires.

Well, my internet company decided to work on the lines during this, so I didn't get to participate.
To be totally honest, I was losing interest anyways. It just didn't seem right. I think that the theme needs to be announced right at the beginning of the actual 3 hours, otherwise there could be future planning, and even creating. Anyways, it still would have been fun.
Also, why wait two months? I wouldn't mind doing a one hour every two weeks or so!
Well, I concluded that doing it TOO often would definitely make it get old fast.
Not to mention cutting into people's other, more important projects.
We'll see. I'll definitely announce the theme next time just as the contest starts.
Other than that, I thought it worked quite well!
The 3 Hour Game Day Results are in! Page 1!
you're welcome, Wing! I wanted to make sure my feedback (that was promised) was given.
Glad you participated, and it was a blast keeping you up before work, my friend!

Observations on the 3 Hour Games for October 08'
Asa: Myself
Suzu: Suzuricho
Pich: My brother.
Ok, so rather than keep it all to myself, I decided to really
delve into the projects submitted to the IRC channel on game day (yesterday)
and post the comments made while we played together on my laptop.
Omg 3 Hours by Little Wing Guy
Here's where you find out Roger's a woman
First off, Wing's game! Well, it isn't so much a game as it is a
tease. Think of it as one of those pranks people play on people online
with the "scary screaming videos". Comments made during gameplay:
Asa: That Child... is not my son, Billy Jea--- oh, had half a face, I see.
Suzu: Who is he talking to?
Asa: Himself, I guess? It's Gollum, the RPG!
Suzu: Looks like he stopped spacing out...
Asa: Roger and Me! See, this is the part where Michael Moore runs out of Flint,
Michigan with camera in tow, as 'nuclear freaks' run after them
Suzu: this is the only "was" out?
Asa: This is why you don't use your knuckles to type.
Suzu: That is the SLOWEST walking NPC ever.
Asa: (watching Roger go "Oh Shit") "It's Dr. Tran!"
Asa: (at the word "Pram" coming up) I have to use.. the pram-aloooooot. o/`
Asa: It doesn't matter that it doesn't matter!
Asa: Nothing can get in "out" way now! (what?)
Suzu: ROFLMAO at the "surprise" ending.
Project 9 by Scribbles
Flatland makes no sense. Just go with it.
This one was silly. And that's about it, really. You'll NEVER believe the
'surprise' ending or the way you can walk while events are trying to activate
around you! and the teleporting ship... this game had it all. And the name
... ok the name made no sense, really. But now we know it's Scrib's 9th attempt
at making something on VX.
Comments made during play:
Asa: huh, this looks like an infomercial
Pich: Like one of those Zoloft commercials...
Suzu: what's with the black sky? That's some POWERFUL fallout!
Pich: Only one straight path?
Asa: At least you can't possibly screw up
Suzu: the door is digging into that poor old man's head!
Pich: how much shit is packed away in those houses that the people have to stand
outside?
Asa: there's some dirty secrets being covered up in Flatland.
Suzu: THERE's NO ESCAPE! YOU MUST TELEPORT THE BOAT!
Asa: Unga to everyone and to everyone an Unga year!
Asa: I'm glad I wasn't the only person who suffered through "Jumper"
Pich: I guess we'll have to wham bam her...
Suzu: So... he goes up to random women and beats them up?
Pich: I am freaked out! The game went 3d?!?!
Asa: It's peewee's playhouse! you can't leave, you walk all over the place,
and there's a mysterious invisible wall in front of the second warphole!
Pich: Warp holes in a house? GO TO WORLD 8! GO TO WORLD 8!
Asa: So... let's just say I beat the messed up version of Cleo and the game
glitched on me.
Belladona by Karsuman
This is the ending you'll WANNA get
In this game, you star a butterfly. And it's all up to you to interpret what is either going on, or what happened prior to the scene. Pretty artsy stuff if you can wrap your brain around it.
Comments during gameplay:
Asa: This one is pretty poignant, you just have to draw your own conclusions.
I loved the butterfly. And the fact that you don't have to fight things being
a puny butterfly.
Suzu: It was dark and poetic.
Asa: Amazing what you can pull off in 3 hours, eh?
Suzu: And the butterfly idea is unique. I've never seen that before, that's for
sure.
Asa: Although in my opinion, no matter which ending you get (there's 2) it's all
about how much we humans suck, lol.
Suzu: Both ARE pretty sad. But I didn't expect LIFE with a theme like Nuclear
Contamination.
Suzu: Graphically, it was beautiful.
Code Blank by Euphorian
No frills. No nonsense. Just text.
If text is your thing, Euph made sure to deliver to you. This game doesn't bother with graphics, art, or even music. You just read. You read and you make choices.
Old timers, rejoice.
gameplay comments:
Suzu: It's interesting that someone decided to make a full text adventure. It
would really appeal to the older generation of gamers.
Asa: I also like the multiple choice thing. Think of this as a "Choose Your Own
Adventure" book turned into a game for you. Only you don't have to turn to page 70
to find out you died.
Suzu: It's a complete game, though. Unlike most here which were either all set up
and intro or in your case, just messing around.
Asa: Would have been nice to have SOME sound, though.
Suzu: It's really too bad I don't care for text games. They're before my time
Asa: hey, now.
Yeah by Liberty
Taco, taco... burrito, burrito...
So this one was another non-game. All intro and set up, but do check it out
for a good laugh. I'm sure he could take this somewhere awesome given more
time. course, the same could be said about all of the entries, really. We had
FUN talking around and about this one! Tacos became our new running inside joke
thanks to Liberty!
Comments during play:
Pich: Leda... Von Jahonnes?
Asa: Yeah, has her own line of designer Jock Straps.
Suzu: And she's proud to be a trophy wife?
Pich: right after Max Carrera.
Asa: sounds like Pincho, Pancho and Tomas Jefferson.
Suzu: Fran Biggs? where's Earl Wedge?
Asa: If the last thing you remembered was Tacos, your life can't have been that
exciting, Fran.
Suzu: Maybe she was filming an ad for Taco Bell?
Pich: At least there's SOMETHING important in her life.
Asa: A job at Del Taco can't possibly be important.
Asa: (at what the hell is going on here?) Apparently, Tacos
Pich: Leda probably ordered tacos from Fran's Del Taco, and Max was next in line
at the drive thru when the nukes hit. Mystery solved.
Pich: I'm Karl. Karl Whogivesashit. Nice to met you.
Asa: He's a Manure...
Suzu: That's "Mah-nyoo-ray", dear.
Pich: (there's gotta be a door around here) Sure! a door in a cave! of course!
Asa: Looks like Karl didn't make it. Oh, Great job, douchebag!
Pich: the last... the last what?
Asa: the last people to see the grand canyon
Pich: The last people to have tasted tacos
Suzu: the last people to play this game?
Asa: and it ends.
Dust to Dust by Clest
Kill those redshirts!
Clest went Wizardry on us, which really is a good system to turn into a
futuristic RPG. People playing his game should also note he's from Brazil,
so the text can't be expected to be PERFECT. Cut the guy some slack and you'll
find quite a playable game for what it was.
Gameplay Comments:
Pich: I hope there's tacos in this game too...
Suzu: (title page) A cowboy game?
Pich: It's set in Mexico? There may be tacos AFTERALL!
Asa: Oh come on. Drop the tacos already!
Pich: (giggles)
Asa: Love the Chrono Trigger midi.
Pich: (humming along)
Suzu: Elena is in the year 2300?
Asa: I open the crates and some robot pops out?
Pich: Lesson to learn; don't open crates.
Asa: (runs) Game over?
Pich: Lesson to learn; don't be a coward. don't run.
Suzu: Common RPG name, Elena...
Pich: you know what would have made this awesome? the game over sequence from
Castlevania SoTN.
Asa: This game has potential if it were worked on and some time dedicated to it.
Suzu: If you're condemned to die, why play?
Asa: actually, there's not a single one of these games that DIDN'T somehow end
in death one way or another!
Suzu: right. Nuclear Contamination. I wish ONE of you had thought of a game
where the contamination was beneficial, somehow.
Pich: We all must die sometime.
Asa: and hopefully... there will be Tacos in the afterlife.
Vermicide by Max McGee
picking locks. Possibly the only thing that WONT splat you
Max showed me everything I wanted to see in this contest; a cohesive game that could be turned into something even more awesome given some time, some decent creativity,
and the soundtrack was an added bonus, in my opinion. And they were Rad. (at least until they went indoors)
Gameplay comments:
Asa: The title page tells it all. No happy here, folks!
Pich: Vermicide? Do you kill Asa's Meatrats in here?
Suzu: None of these games offered HOPE.
Asa: ok then, let's start it.
Suzu: For some odd reason, I am reminded of Battle Angel Alita
Asa: well, he DOES have a thing for cyberpunk.
Asa: Suicidal to go out without your Rad suit. Gotta look Rad if you're gonna
tough the nuclear toxins!
Pich: Radiation
Asa: I know.
Suzu: Tacos?
Asa: Not now.
Suzu: I thought it was very interesting. If he were to expand on this, it could be
a very awesome project. It looked awesome and I liked the experience for picking a
lock. Nice touch.
Pich: It looked like it could have been really good if you gave him more time.
Asa: I pretty much agree on those. Since no one mentioned it, the music kicked ass
and really contributed to the atmosphere.
Pich: Splat again? Oh COME ON
Asa: I warn you, he INTENDED to make something happen downstairs from the drop, but
he just didn't have the time. Cut the man some slack.
Pich: still, every turn it's splat!
Asa: yes, it's very splatty. Listen to his voice though. Total magic, P.
Last but not least, my entry. Actually, they played my game first, but I am posting their few comments and such last, as I am not the best commenter on my own work;
Nukeland by Asalieri
yeah. I gamerolled you.
Suzu: I loved Frog!
Pich: That's a powerful voice you've got there, Astley.
Suzu: Rats as food, Lol.
Pich: Nice operational toilet, Asa
Well whew! that was long, hope you enjoyed it! Now get out there and play em'!
(See you next time we decide to do something this crazy again! maybe in 2 months, hint hint)

What are you thinking about right now?
You may also notice we're seldom on at the same time, Max, and I am by far the more active one on the forum and the only one on IRC.
Right now we're living off money we scrimped up over the years. We make do. I'm also on sabbatical right now. I work as an English teacher in Germany.
Sometimes, you just want enjoy life for a year or so.
