This game is a lot more hilarious while drunk or stoned. I'm going to call this game a three beer minimum. Do not play while sober.

Maybe if each spell had a chance of stunning the mage or leaving them vulnerable in some way. Certain more powerful spells would have a greater chance of this. This way there would be more to consider when picking a spell than just it's MP cost.

So we're talking about each character having one or more power abilities that can only be used once per battle or maybe even once per inn stay?

Maybe split the poison status effect into two versions. Have the hornets and other early enemies use a weaker version that wears off after four or five rounds and does half the damage. Have a weak antidote item that cures the first and a strong antidote items that cures both.
And consider starting the player off with a handful of healing items. The Warrior of Light already has a full set of equipment he might well have a few goodies in his pockets.
