The reality of it is though that because millions of Americans have been taking out mortgages they realistically can't pay back, and borrowing money without the wherewithal of returning it is why your housing market/economy has tanked.

In another comparison with customer satisfation and the movie business, some people say that having a name attached to a film means that it will make money regardless. IE If you attach Spielberg, Russell Crowe or Christian Bale to a film today then it'll probably do fairly well. In the video game biz, names aren't worth as much, because as the actual media makes the designer more invisible than in cinema.

This is why the few recognizable names that are floating out there (Sid Meier, Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, Shiggy, Kojima, Sakaguchi or Nojima) are worth SO much to more-than-just-casual gamers. Even if someone gets their name out there a little bit even though they make crummy games (like American McGee) then they'll probably still see good sales. Personally, when I see a game with the name Sid Meier attached, I jump at the chance to play it, because I really have come to associate that name with fun and quality.
