On the Arrogance of Storytellers
This is another issue that I think is related to a general neglect towards the actual practice of video game design. For some reason, people have gotten the idea in thier heads that RPGs or RPG Maker is somehow different from designing an actual video game, but in reality all the same things ring true for both sides. A focus on the inherent mechanics and playability of one's GAME (because remember that's what we are making, games) seems to be lacking in the popular mindset of our community, and I have no idea how to remedy it other than preaching for awareness.

I am all for democracy but let us not forget that it was a democratic government that elected the Nazi party into power. Are you saying that because the people chose the Nazis as thier leader that the Nazis rock? Is that what you're saying?
Excuse me, mien heir, but I'll never bow to the will of the majority simply because it is so. There is no "will of the majority" defining what rocks, and what rocks is something that is, I think, objective and real, defined by the emotional and physical response of a listener and a musician to the song being played. There is also an objective method of analysis for song composition, so that someone can look at the structures of a song and determine if it is well (and creatively) constructed or not, thus adding bearing to thier rocks/doesn't rock argument.

I see Kentona, but since when was what people like the most an idicator of what rocks the hardest? Saying that something rocks just because its popular (or even that its popular because it rocks) is a faulty association. There have been plenty of popular rock songs that do not "rock" at all.
I would even argue that Sweet Child of Mine doesn't deserve nearly as much praise as it recieves. I don't like the song. Its a bore to play, a bore to listen to. It shouldn't be in video games. And also because everyone likes it, its no longer cool to like it, so now I hate it even more than before for the fact that everyone likes it. That makes me rebellious and thus cooler than hollow conformists who like it.
To sum it up, I'm cooler than Kentona, the song is overrated. And yes, Hot For Teacher would be right shiny.

Ah, therein lies the rub. Songs that are 'fun' are not always songs that 'rock' the hardest. Songs that are fun to listen to do not usually translate well to playability, and viche-versae. Consider "Sweet Child of Mine", where a lot of people enjoy the melody, but infact the song is at a relatively slow pace for Guns'n'Roses and is infact quite repeptetive in its structure and riffage. For a competent musician to play, this song could quickly become a bore.
Simply said, it might be fun to listen to, but it doesn't rock hard enough.
