The Customer Is Always Right - Perception Of Designer & Player "Responsibilities" In Amateur & Commercial Video Games

author=Max
Realistically speaking, it is unimaginable even if I were to achieve the greatest possible success for an indie developer that anyone who has not seen a computer or played a videogame before could even FIND my game.

That's true.
Still, I think including an option for people who haven't played many (or any) jRPGs would be a good addition.

I happen to think that my reviewing style is--for the most part, I know not every review I've written is a sparkling and golden eample of this--a lot more creator-focused and a lot gentler and more constructive than Silviera's or (in that one instance) Solitayre's.

From an outsider's point of view, I can't see much of a difference (comparing those reviews to your one-and-an-half-star ones).
Still, I guess we have very different sensibilities about things.

Star Stealing Prince

Progress update: I've gotten Snowe to level 5, so he could (barely) survive a blizzard. While I was doing that, I accidentally found the Cozy Mantle for Hiante.

Then I went against the boss again, and I survived the blizzard! But then he decided to make a follow-up attack and killed me. :(

Next time, I'll make it.

(I have Erio's Spare Suit equipped on Snowe. °°)

Progress update 2: I won!
With Snowe at level 5 and the Cozy Mantle for Hiante, the difficulty felt just about right.

Progress update 3: And now the demo is over. :(
Good luck with the rest of the game!

The other ones are fair game however because I figure by then players should realize they are floating around random places as indicated by a little book sprite that looks out of place. And not usually in bookcases

I have just two of them, and I found them both in bookshelves. °°
If I rememeber well, the little book sprites out of place never gave me anything.

Anyway: Snowe has mittens that protect him from being frozen, but I didn't have any equipment for the other party members except for the one they started with. °° (And a Bone Armor that I equipped on Hiante)

Anyway, I'll try grinding to Level 5 since it doesn't seem I have much of a chance otherwise.

Personally I wonder if it's my duty to cater to players who didn't explore when I give them multiple things to be on the look out for (you can dust your kingdom's dust laden dishes, that should be hinting at you can explore quite a bit and shouldn't skip over exploring).

I don't think you have any "duty".
But I'll say this: even though I love your game (seriously, I love it) if the only answer to not being able to go on was starting over and redoing everything just because I didn't check a bookshelf, I don't think I would do it.

(In other news, I'm not sure I've gotten every item from the villagers. My Snowe is a jerk. :( )

Edit: Ok, the boss killed me again, but this time I had a fair chance. Maybe the only thing that's actually overpowered is its "blizzard" attack... it oneshots my Snowe and freezes the skeleton guy, leaving me with only one active party member...

Snowe should also have both his skills (Flame I and Cure I)

I have them, but it would really suck to be stuck in a unwinnable situation because I didn't do something in the very first part of the game... Can I suggest you to put another way to learn them in the tower?
So people who didn't get them at the beginning aren't forced to start over...

Anyway, I'll try again later and let you know how it goes!

Wow, Skie, your first projects were so bad!

Also, @Max: You know, I find it pretty strange that you're so much better at giving feedback than at receiving it. I read some of your reviews out of curiosity, and they're all in the range from pretty good to very good.
Still, comparing them to the ones you linked to earlier, I can't help but think about how much you would hate receving your own review.

I'm not criticizing you or anything, it just feels... strange. °°

Simply put, I no longer make the default assumption that everyone is more experienced than myself and has a lot to teach me.

Well, I don't think one has to be better than you to be useful. °°
Personally, I see feedback as a "tool": it's up to me to come up with a way to use it, if I want to use it at all.

I love this game!
I think the best thing about it is how it manages to convey the feeling of "too good to be true" about its setting.

But... I was so happy to finally have more than one party member, and then the boss raped me. :(
Still, I've seen that being level four should be alright, so I'll try again before grinding.
