Man, I am so upset that I'm missing this.

Shadowtext: You might be interested in this topic; it has a ton of options besides OpenRPG (most are free).
http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=400039

QUICK INTRODUCTION FOR 3.X OLDBIES
-The game is different. Like, waaaay different (re: CoDzilla is slightly more extinct)
-There are 500 (more) types of elves
-Low-level WIZs can actually do damage
-Annoying monsters (now "minions") can actually hurt you, but die in one hit

QUICK NOTE FOR NEWBIES
-Shadowtext can do whatever he wants
-Shadowtext can use as many Gelatinous Cubes and Ochre Jellies as he wants
-Shadowtext can team the NPCs up on a character and possibly kill them
-Shadowtext can make as many annoying diplomacy encounters as he wants (actually, skill challenges should make this much, much better)
-Shadowtext can make the ceiling fall down
-Shadowtext can have you bull-rushed into a 60' pit
-Shadowtext is on your side, and you should respect him--he's the reason that you're playing, after all!

MODIFY: "You could just use one name and be all mysterious."
"Like Cher."

Let's hate on the D&D 4e SRD!

Well, I know that Marcus never bought the books because of the SRD. I doubt that would be the main reason, however; the 3.x SRD was a bunch of rtf files that were split up and hard to search through. Lessened the amount of stuff you had to carry around, yeah, but not ideal.

I'm sure we'll see similar arguments to this one on the biggie forums (EN World, RPGnet), hopefully on the gleemax (WotC's own forums) as well. Maybe they're going to wait? That seems silly, though; they already introduced the basic rules and character generation stuff in the Keep on the Shadowfell adventure last May, and people have already started compiling info. I have a pdf on my laptop right that has enough rules, lists and monsters to easily play through 3rd level with a pregen party from the WotC site.

MODIFY: Granted, if I were to run a quickie-campaign with these rules, I'd just wind up using the 3.x shops for longswords/rope/etc... but if somebody didn't have those books, the 3.x SRD is still available on the internet. =D

So maybe we should lower our standards a tad.

B-but guys. They don't say "fag" anymore! They are changing!

Let's hate on the D&D 4e SRD!

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/welcome

So, the 3.x SRD had the core game, psionic and epic rules available free for download on the WotC site. The 4e SRD is a 60+ page list of terms you can use in your own commercial products.

:<

This isn't a huge deal for me since I'm buying the books anyway, but, uh... man. I was hoping to get a character or two created before they arrived.

Discuss this sadness. :< :< :< :<

Release Something! Day [FOR REALZ this time]

I feel really terrible about this, since Karsu has been really busy (coughmakingskillsforphiladelphiacough) and thus his "Crazetex --> English" translation and addons are not complete. I've also decided not to release a teaser of my D&D game since I want to add about 500 more features first.

But, hey, Euphorian (or somebody) needed this as well, right?

(This is the first RS! day I will not be RSing in, it seems... maybe I can hack something out of an old project... yes... I know just the thing...............)

Okay, so long story short:

--Karsuman sucks
--Craze is going to zip up some random files and release them this evening

So maybe we should lower our standards a tad.

I know a friend who LARPs, NoblemanNick. I refuse to watch/join, because the one time that I did watch was absolutely terrifying (the... the costumes....).

If The Great Gatsby was a game, it would be a point-and-click where Nick had drunk gay sex and then turn into a Donkey Kong clone--you get to play Nick trying to run up and kiss Jordan while Jay Gatsby throws teacups and temper tantrums down ramps.

Screenshot Thread With One Eyebrow and a Golden Tooth

Karsu wanted screenshots of my VX project, so. It's a tutorial "dungeon" based off of the first adventure in the D&D 3.Xe Adventure Game. Based on your party setup, you can pick locks, break open chests, hit your friends, sing a unicorn awake to heal you, kill goblins (or avoid them), and experiment with discovering the use of a magic item. XP is granted by whether or not you dare play with the magic item (you can auto-analyze) and at the end of the adventure; you don't have to fight to gain XP.

Also, writing in second-person rocks.

"Your attempt to softly coo the unicorn
awake turned into a terrible cacophony.\!
In the end, however, the effect is similar:
Alabern wakes up and quietly examines the
goblin's den. He stares at the party for
an instant--was that a smile?--then returns
to the forest."

YOU FAILED YOUR DC12 WILD EMPATHY CHECK??? WHAT THE HELL (also, wild empathy works different in my game because I am the DM and can do whatever the hell I want)

(the random sprites on the left side are temporary shopkeeps so that I can test without having to build the base city first)

A half-elf monk, human cleric, halfling rogue and half-orc sorceress walk into a goblin den....

So maybe we should lower our standards a tad.

Alright, real reply:

I agree that stories are pretty overrated in an RPG. I don't mind having a decent story, but the presentation and characters are much more important in making the player want to continue (outside of various mechanical aspects like your silly "battle systems").

Valkyrie Profile 2 has an absolutely terrible story, but I didn't realize it until Karsuman pointed it out to me. The thing was, I was so wrapped-up in the presentation of the game's cutscenes (see SFL's bit on cinematic games) that I immediately thought that it was awesome.

FFX-2 has a ridiculous plot and mediocre presentation. The characters are the saving grace of the game's cutscenes. No, they are not very deep. No, they do not have emotional trauma (well, Nooj is suicidal but whatever). Yes, they are all sluts. They are so over-the-top and constant (meaning that their emotions/ambitions don't randomly change) that FFX-2's plot is pretty much carried entirely on the antics of some very solid, albeit one-dimensional, freaks. It's fun to watch and a joy to play out. One could argue that Paine is two-dimensional because she's a jerk but occasionally protects Yuna from giant robots, but Paine transcends all descriptions and just sort of floats around the Place of Many Excellently Awesome Dude/ttes*.

IN THE END (it doesn't even matter**):
-Have decent presentation in your games
-Have fun characters in your games
-Make sure that the story provides gameplay (discussed throughout the topic)

*-this also contains Xenosaga's Allen and Cannan, Shadow Hearts 2's Karen, Planescape: Torment's Morte and Fall-From-Grace, and finally guest character Miranda from Grandia III. I have never played Grandia III, but I intend to one day and I hear that Miranda is incredible.

**-Shut up, guilty pleasure band.

MODIFY (I do that a lot, don't I?):

In order to see excellent dialogue at work, play the let's-go-beat-up-Vegnagun sequence from FFX-2 on youtube. If you don't want to look for it, here is an example of how characters can interact to make your game win everything:

Nooj: I am suicidal blah blah blah, I will sacrifice myself to trap Shuyin blah blah blah

Yuna: I don't like your plan.

Awkward pause.

Yuna: It sucks.

If you guys use 4e, it would probably really important to use OpenRPG due to the incredibly grid-based mentality of combat (PUSH, GRAB, BILLIONS OF CONES, etc).

Also, if it would be helpful, you guys can use/tweak the sample, quick-start characters. They're done in Adventure Game style, which is neat because the Adventure Game rocks (I am actually using some of the dungeons in my VX project!). It's not too difficult to "upgrade" them to the full rules in my experience (Insight DC 10, need four successes before two failures).

So maybe we should lower our standards a tad.

I promise that I am going to make a real post tomorrow, but I'm tired and just want to say this:

The Great Gatsby doesn't really even have a terrific plot. It's an excellent book, but it's just a soap opera. The whole bit about the person actually driving the car at the end was interesting, but otherwise it was just good writing, not really plot.

Again, I'll read/respond/modify this post tomorrow morning, bye-bye.
