The Reconstruction

Oh right. I think the element changed the damage type too ( heat or physical for body, etc.)

The Reconstruction

Spoilers just in case!

If I remember correctly, Adi has a resonance sort of attack of her own element that does extra damage against someone of the same element, instead of the opposite.

Havan's melee attack changes the damage type it inflicts every turn.

I'm pretty sure it means the caster's own element. It would be rather useless if it inflicted the target's own element, after all!

The extra stun was either a typo, or had a chance to inflict twice. I'm leaning toward typo.

Have a good time!

The Reconstruction

Ten minutes until my carpool gets here, so I'll try!

Silver Opportunity was Yfus' quest, I think. I think what I may have done was list them at the point in time where they became available, rather than their location. The reason for this is that they were initially labeled "Chapter 1," etc. and I changed it to locations at a later date. Or something.

Kidra's basically a spy who joined for cover. There aren't a lot of guilds in Nal that she could tag along with.

The original Blackening was due to the volcano that Fortifel is built around. Probably because of Fortian meddling. Probably due to experiments with machinery.

The second reconstruction followed the outbreak of the blue plague and the peasant revolt.

*coffee break*

Tez's fate will be expanded upon in IMTS and The Drop, though not fully! The wires are due to part of the system that causes the cycle to carry out.

Yes, they were. Tez sort of narrates what should have happened when they were activated.

IMTS is probably even longer! But it also runs a whole lot better and you can set the difficulty any time you want. Good luck, and thanks again!

The Reconstruction

Thanks for taking the time to let me know your thoughts! I'll try to answer what I can with my fading memory.

Yes, she did get a star for her attack affinity. I guess I could have made it clearer, but it wasn't an actual physical upgrade like with most of the other characters, so I worded it as best I could.

That whole quest table seems to get worse every time I touch it. I think you got it all. Fero has one in Chapter 5 too (I doubt you missed it, though).

I think the exclamation mark was Kidra's weapon proc that caused the enemy's Wait time to decrease.

Hmm, let me recall. There is one in Rulian's cave, one that Havan had, and one in the Watcher's room. Huh! The only thing I can imagine is that he's counting the one in his crashed ship, as well. It's been almost 5 years since I've even thought about it, to be honest. I'll make sure to clarify (and reveal the last one) in the next game.

Good luck with IMTS! I hear it turned out pretty good!

Good "Science Focused" Sci-Fi Movies?

Contact is my second favorite movie of all time. Sphere is more of a horror movie and will make you hate jellyfish forever, but it's entertaining.

I found them both on a single DVD at the flea market for $1 recently so I got to rewatch them. They hold up pretty well!

The Drop Review

Thanks once again! I'm glad you enjoyed what is basically a grand experiment in mashing up gameplay mechanics. I waffled around how much story to include - I didn't want to include too much that was pivotal to the series, because I know the roguelike genre is an acquired taste, so most of what I included is just fluff. Then I finished it and people were actually enjoying it so I was like "whoa" and I added an actual ending and, later, Dehl and Xopi.

The range exploit is an interesting one I hadn't considered. Initially, the high health cost of magic is meant to discourage spamming, but I guess once you get to a high enough level, that becomes a non-issue anyway. Maybe I should have gone with percentage costs for spells. Oh well!

The next game won't be out for another year at the least, so enjoy your break from reviewing my stuff!

Design principles vol. 1: RPGs and strategy

Haha, I happened to see my name while skimming the front page and I jumped a little. Hi!

I like the mental image that accompanies the 1D chess analogy, though I do think it helps to recognize a conflict's "basic strategy" versus its "basic goal." In chess, the goal is to put the king into checkmate. The basic strategy varies: it can be a matter of capturing more pieces than the opponent, or sacrificing pieces to bait him into a foolish move, or even pulling out the old Scholar's Mate against an unaware opponent and ending the game in a few moves. RPG battles also have a basic goal: defeat all the enemies before they can do the same to me. It also has a variety of basic strategies (melee versus magic, elemental factors, special skills). Much like chess, the strategies' effectiveness varies with the opponent, though it's rarely an even match-up as you'll either be facing fodder enemies or a boss with an impossible-to-match amount of HP.

Chess, meanwhile, is entirely a spatial experience - the pieces are differentiated by how they behave in 2-dimensional space. Taking that away is roughly equivalent to taking away all commands except "Attack", meaning you end up with a pure but flat experience (like Half-Minute Hero, I guess!)

Really, you need a defined goal for battles for the player's benefit, and a focus on DPS is the natural result of that particular goal. To point a finger, it's technically the result of poor AI on the enemy's behalf, either accidental or deliberate. With chess, your opponent is on equal mental footing; outside of a tactical RPG, a battle seems to exist to pick away at your resources, so dispatching foes as efficiently as possible is the real goal. It's a design philosophy - not a particularly good one, in my opinion, but it's meant to test a different set of skills from the obvious goal. It's all down to implementation, too - chess is timeless because of its solid simplicity, while an RPG's balancing act of expending/straining resources is based in too many variables to easily contain.

(This turned into a ramble before I knew it, so I apologize for that.)

(Also, EO is pretty rad, though I keep ending up with the bad ending! Some day I will make good on my opening promise!)
