And you are...? (THE INTRODUCTION THREAD)

NOTE that this is pretty much pasted from elsewhere because I'm too lazy to write it up again. :x

I was first introduced to the RPGMaker series in mid-2000 by a friend, and after staying up the entire night at his house experimenting, I was hooked. I joined the internet communty in the summer of 2001, after spending about half a year or so lurking around various sites, doing my best to learn as much as I could. I jouned a site called Dark Dominion, using the name EvincarOfEarth. Some time passed, and I released a demo of my game Alnetak Moon, which was well-recieved and above the standards of the time. I also released an ABS minigame demo and a minigame styles after Space Invaders (called Face Invaders, using emoticons). Soon I was promoted to moderate the Game Projects forum, and then the RM2K/3 Help forum, and then the Literature forum. Finally I was promoted to a full staff member. Unfortunately the site died soon after as the administrator lost interest.

During this time, I began really joining other forums and posting elsewhere, including Gaming World, War of the Magi, and even Gaming Ground Zero, as well as countless smaller forums (this was also the time when Evincar molded into the name Evega. I consider the two names to be of the same era of my online career).

I had my own site, called Epoch Studios for some time after the fall of Dark Dominion. It was spriting-based, following one of my interests, and it got a large community. Many of them "refugees" from the old site. Eventually the old administrator of Dark Dominion regained interest in having a website and created a place called Dev Empire. I let Epoch Studios go down in order to support the Dev Empire member base. I was staff there, but the community had a hard time holding itself together. During my time there, I released the demo of a game called Dev Empire Dance Revolution, a dancing game programmed in RM2K3 with original graphics. Eventually, though, the community fell apart. And sick of the drama, I left for a time.

By then I had been a member of rmxp.net for a time, and it was during this time that I began posting more. I began using the name Ionem, trying to drop my Dev Empire/Dark Dominion roots. During this transitional time, I released a demo of my first RMXP game, Dreams of Nevendria and became a Moderator of RMXP.net's RMXP sections, during the same clump promotion of members such as Showkaizer. I think this the promotion of multiple members at once really began to mark that RMXP.net was accepting its role as one of the "big" sites.

I modded for some time, then offline reasons forced me to take a long break. I faded away from the scene, and was eventually demodded. I returned months later as Despain, finally having settled into the me that you today. By now I had a different outlook on the internet- one that is less focused on internet drama and accepts the fact that 'it's just the internets' and nothing to get too serious about. This is very freeing- it lets me just say what needs to be said without worrying about garbage like forum politics. Sometimes I might even just stir up trouble to see how others react, but nothing ever seriously malicious. It's all just about fun and humor now. Things have been a lot easier for me in this time.

I've been banned from RMXP.net for continually being myself- giving harsh and very real criticism that many children couldn't take, making jokes that lots of children would get offended by, and criticizing the administration. It was that last bit that pushed me over the edge, so to speak, and led to the ban. Even though I am banned there, I am still in contact with that community, though, often popping up in their irc channel to idle or making a new account on the forums just to read the goings-on.

Now, I am the owner/administrator of Rhino Cap (http://www.rhinocap.net), and mainly an active member here and GW.

And now we're at the fun part.

I've got a good number of years of RPGMaker experience behind me, and I've mastered just about everything in the program. I consider myself a decent spriter and a very good writer. I admit that I'm often a mean-spirited and seemingly hateful dude, sometimes, and definitely an elitist. I do not believe in sugar-coating criticism; I'll often be harsh even to my friends because I think that you should tell someone if something is bad.

I'm a sophomore in my fourth semester at college (Southern CT), majoring in English and hopefully soon Graphic Design. I consider RPGMaking a hobby, not a career path. That's why I use the program; it lets me tell stories and put my graphics to use, and I do it for fun. And yes, I use the legal version.

Smash Brothers

-Do you play Smash Bros?
If so, would you consider yourself a leisure player (parties, friends) or more competitive.

I used to play it CONSTANTLY with my friends, a few years ago. We were really into it, big-time. Unfortunately they kept playing it while I stopped and they got better and better while I stayed where I was. They ended up going to national tournaments and shit and I just lost interest in playing with them. I might play for fun once in a while now but very rarely.

-Character of choice? Why?

I usually just go random. If I'm in a funny mood I might use DK because I think his sidestep is hilarious or sometimes I might use Luigi with the aim of kicking someone with his taunt. If I'm able to do that in the match I consider it a victory for myself (remember that I'm just used to losing since the people I play with are way out of my league so I amuse myself in other ways while they wave-dash and shuffle all over eachother).

I used to use Falco because I really like his short hop and shooting thing to annoy opponents, and sometimes I used to use Sheik or Young Link too. But I stopped taking the game too seriously over two years ago and haven't had a favorite or best character since then.

-Have you ever fought in a tournament of any sorts?

I have participated in some small local ones and I've gotten my ass kicked. Like I said, my friends have gone to the national tournament a few times and regularly go to state tournaments and are in the top three or something in the state. I just don't have the time for that sort of thing. :\

Nesskid and Lock on that list are the guys I play with.

Speaking of projects I'm happy to finally see Sandfall again, looks like its moving along and I like the new sprite style; can't wait to see how the new battle system plays too!

Then download the demo. I'll download yours now since I have tonight off! :)

Edit:

Just played until I had the chance to save at the beginning of the cave. I am seriously liking what you have so far- although a few things annoy me. Of course, the first would be the RTP graphics. Not that they're bad, but a game like this wouldn't be able to properly stand out from the other RMXP games out there like it really should. From a random screenshot, it would be hard to tell this game apart from Final Fantasy Dragons: Secrets of Kingdom X, Rebirth.

The second is the mapping. I have always hated maps that go right up to the edges. It's not hard at all to have a tile or two or border, so the characters heads aren't cut off at the top. It also makes it much easier to see where exactly to step to move to the next map. I'm mostly talking here about the small puzzles on the cliffs- this isn't only terribly annoying, but makes the game feel very incomplete and almost seems buggy.

Other than that it is seeming really cool so far and I look forward to playing more of it. Loving the battle system.

Back from the grave, for now...

I remember you, old chum. :)

It's a little-known fact that when you select Zelda on the character screen in Melee, if you hold down a button before the match starts you begin straight away as Sheik. They can do something like that for Zero Suit Samus if you prefer fighting as her.

That's not little-known at all. Everyone does that.

Japan Time

Man I just listened to it. That was really badass. I love how right in the middle it just switches BOOM SONG OF STORMS but it works so well.

Hopefully it wasn't the full song, though. Needs some serious Gerudo Valley man.

Platformer Maker XP

His Metroid game wasn't as good as you might think. Very, very incomplete.

It's possible with scripting, but so far there hasn't been a single platform script worth using. There are quite a few out there, but none of them are incredibly usable or complete.

I'm sort-of working on one with someone but that won't be getting finished any time soon.

Hey, nice to see you here. I never got the chance to play this game, though I wanted to. Glad to have something to download.

Is this set in the same world as Outlaw City and other games of yours?

Jesus christ, this is a true tale of epic Avril Lavigne-ness in old movie format! Why didn't this one win?

It didn't have cute little bunny guys I think. :)

[DEMO] Dread

The text in this screenshot is completely unreadable!

Other than that, I wish you the best. survival-horror on RM2K/3 never tends to work right (except Backstage was pretty good).

If I have time I might download the demo, since the screenshots seem pretty good.

And I like the the main character wears a suit. I've always thought business suits looked really cool.
