Cliche Quest

I remember playing a joke game with the exact same name as this.

... Don't worry about it, though, I kind of like this one. :P

I noticed the week before I posted this there was another game on the Steam Workshop that was released called "Cliche Quest of Saving the Princess and other almost heroic deeds DEMO" which appears to be very much one of those "joke" type games. Is that the game you're referring to?

The original intro/trailer I made for Cliche Quest was posted in 2009.

After doing a little more digging I was able to find two games that released very partial demos, one from 2004 and one from 2010 with the same name that were both abandoned. The 2004 one predates mine which I guess just goes to show that a game about unoriginal games isn't very original. :P

I think I can safely say though this is the best and most complete game called Cliche Quest that you're likely to play.

Unreal Engine and CryEngine are now cheaper than RPG Maker

The CryEngine 3 SDK and the Unreal 3 UDK are both still free to use. These plans for Crytek and Unreal both offer upgraded engines but one thing you have to look at is are they right tool for what you're trying to accomplish?

Yes, you can make more than just generic FPS games with them but they aren't exactly conducive to making 2D pixelated JRPGs, especially if you've never worked with them before, whereas RPG Maker is made specifically for that purpose and you can start making your own game out of the box after reading a simple tutorial or two.

Personally, I would recommend trying out the Unreal 3 UDK for anyone interested in getting into Unreal development.

Post your Music

Here's a little chiptune loop I made for my new game Cliche Quest.

It's called The Last Dungeon.

I'm also on the Youtubes!

Here's a couple:

I like the style although, the hill tiles make it hard to tell if that's a decline, incline or just a brown pit. A bit of texturing like the grass would make it easier to discern its a cliff side. Other than that, I like it.

I dig the screenshot...but a "typical" battle is against an enemy with 12 times as much health? That's harsh.

Cashmere wants to review your games

Hey and whatnot...check out Cliche Quest...you know...if you want...whatever. I don't care. Yeah, I do. A little.

The Story:
Dark Lord is seeking out the 5 Cliches of Power and with them he can rule the land! For some reason, only you can stop him. Also...he has stolen your nifty hat that you didn't really like anyway. Along the way, you'll probably fall in love with the shy healer who happens to hold some mysterious key to stopping him. There's probably a magic tree involved too somehow. Maybe you even start your own rock band...who knows?!

It's not one of those "ha, ha! look I made a RPG Maker game!" It's a totally serious but totally not serious game that pokes fun at classic RPG cliches.

The Rare/Obscure RM Games Request Topic

I don't think this is a rare or obscure game persay but I can't remember the name of it.

It's got a surreal but cheery MSPaint style to it, but not completely terrible. I remember seeing a screenshot where there were these little worm like things with smiles on their faces were popped out of the ground in the middle of town and they were animated. I think it was made by some Russian guy(?) but it was in English. On the other hand I could be completely wrong about the Russian thing.

It's not Space Funeral or any of the other games by Catamite.

What category to submit sample map with event code?

I made a noscript slot machine fully evented from scratch, fully commented as an editable/playable (VXAce) map and was just wondering what category I should use as a submission for it. It's not really a game, it's something someone could use in a game, it's not actually a script, it's event code...would be utility...or what?

The video is a clip from the game I made that I used it in.

The actual sample map, I created with the fully commented event code looks like this, before I made some extra tweaks to it.

One small question: What's with the images looking like they're double-sized?

That's just for the screenshots. The game uses default resolution though.

Edit: Ah, I see the issue. The length of the image window is fixed here on RMN so it creates an annoying scrollbar. Ehhh...nerts. I'll have to fix that.

Cliche Quest

Yep, it's good to go now. And the game will be released as 6 episodes. Each episode will expand the game world and include all previous content. Saves can be copied and continued from one episode to the next.
