And you are...? (THE INTRODUCTION THREAD)
Currently employed under the U.S. Government's military service as a "Humane Intelligence Collector" and attend a language school to learn 4 years worth of a particular language in 1 year so that I can utilize it for the future of all of mankind but more or less for nothing really because I probably won't be using it in Iraq. I'm not mormon. I'm 22. I have a Korean, German and Swedish heritage streamlined with a history of drug abuse and alcoholism. The heritage, not me. :) I actually have something to live for and I love Guinness.
Anywho. I'm cooler than Mr. Y because <insert whatever Mr. Y said> but better! My hobby for the past 15 years has been art. My real art history pretty much coincides with my RPGMaker life because of my wanting to make tilesets for RPG95 and charasets(back when they were called that). I dropped into the scene about 9 years ago where I stumbled upon some lame dudes and a couple of chicks(who ended up leaving) in a channel called #rpgmaker. There, out of all the lame dudes, I met a few guys that stood out from the rest whom I've known since up until now and hopefully well into the future. During the times of #rpgmaker, many a things happened and it was all-in-all a buncha freakin' good times. Lots of fun stories. Wish I could get back in contact with all those ho-bags. Would make for a nice reunion. Anywho, I consider myself as a learned but average artist and occasionally dabble in the traditional arts of nude painting and smearing. Just kidding. My preferred mediums are pencil and ink. Shading and coloring is all done computer-side which I've grown particularly fond of although I don't do it as much anymore.
I attempted to go for an MBA but ended up dropping it because I hated accounting and math. After that, I attended an art school in some place that was expensive before joining the military. I plan to rejoin the college learning scene come this winter so that I can get that lame ass degree requirement out of the way to get into the field of conceptualizing character designs and environmental coolnesses like I wanted.
Right at this moment, I'm playing as a level 25 Hunter in Lord of the Rings Online. It's quite the fun and if you play on the right server, we can party and I can help you level up. You should join. MMORPGs are fun! I mean.. gawd.. there are just so many to choose from now. In the past when I played them almost every waking hour, they weren't as common.
Finally, I'm also an impulse buyer of domains and currently are in the ownership of 23 domains. I don't have any real plans for any of them but it's fun to have them I suppose. People trade pokemon, I buy domains.
Fun fun.
So who made up this lame ass topic again? Just kidding. I think...

Affliation

My site is like 10 times as big as this one i dont see what you guys problem is..
Well. I'm sorry to say but my dad can shoot laser beams out of his eyes and can fly.
Apparently you found this site somehow and want to affiliate with it for some reason. Doesn't seem like you share any sort of universal admission to maker growth though seeing as you just spilled some weird comeback to nothing.
I browsed the site and the projects and what not. For such a big site, there really isn't much there. That's not a diss, that's plain observation. RPGMaker.net is a nexus for all the RPGMakers in the galaxy to congregate and users can have the space to submit their games and progressively support it. Not a single RPGMaker. Personally, I don't see how affiliation would help any. Maybe adding your RPGMaker to the database and allowing users to post the game here for the project hosting.
But meh! Why affiliate? Especially with someone so easily offended from nothing. By the way, don't get offended. You posted this in the public, which was mistake number one and number two, you got defensive for no reason. You should have sent an E-Mail to the administrators instead, silly.
For all I care this is just a "plug to my website" topic. (Your affiliation button sucks, btw. :>)
Cool Maker though.

Next thing you know, you'll have the guy walking around like human prozac drawing sad girls in snow.

RPGS... you've beaten
I've beaten:
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy 6 (over 30 times since I bought it back on the SNES. Haven't played it in 4 years though.)
Chrono Trigger (WAY over 50 times. Bought it back on the SNES. Everything past the first game was all New Game+. Crono is level 79 now I believe. Haven't played it in like 4 years though.)
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 10-2
Final Fantasy Tactics (Over 10 or 20 times)
...something I guess you really don't think about. I don't remember anything else besides those main ones. Uhmm.. maybe a Secret of Mana.. Terranigma and Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia are some too.

Stories in Games: A Counterpoint to Usual Thinking
Actually. I disagree with the dude but agree with most of what Shadowtext said. I love playing devil's advocate.
What about original stories that aren't books but written by seasoned novelists that are tuned for games? *ahem* And Se-- Forever An Ill Fate just posted a prime example.
Also by what Card said, his games will suck anyway because it'll just be "a pathetic job of trying to paste story on top of a game." <sarcasm>Because I mean.. god.. stories adapted into games suck so much. I mean.. JEEZ.. it's like the story was like copy and pasted or something straight into the game and not really even remotely adapted. I mean like EXACTLY the same! It's LIKE copies or something!</sarcasm> I'm sure he'll adapt elements of his stories to work for the games. Elements being the story because the characters are filled and so is the environment. Lucky lucky. The problem with movies adapted from books is because they never EVER EVER stay true to the novels. They always have to change one little thing. Strike Batman Begins from that list though. :O~~
And dubya-tee-eff.. his book is going to become a movie and a few games. That means he is a sellout regardless if he is Mormon or not. Buhwahahaha! What a loser.
I believe a story can easily be adapted into a game. *points at Maranda* Although that goes against #2 closing thought of said topic creator. I believe it is still a game. Game is being used as a broad term. It played with my emotions and had me watching it multiple times spawning ideas and such. Isn't that what stories are suppose to do? lol That's not the point though.
A story, regardless if it is for a book, game, movie, etc.., is still a story. Stories can branch off or be linear. It's just how everything is presented. ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!
Good books, bad books, good movies, bad movies, bad games, and good games. Stories in games have never been a problem to the extent that it outweighs movies and novels. I'd rather find a bad movie or game personally than to find a bad book. Reading takes too long too and needs to captivate and inspire to hold my attention.
This topic is an excellent source and example for Maker Users to reference. Down with bad stories! ACTION! ACTION! ACTION! Think outside the box!

Stories can be very helpful for getting the player invested in the goal that's being presented, thus making the eventual goal that much more tantalizing.Agreed!

Game Length
Cheers to you, Mewd. Totally agree!
If a creator is ballsy and stupid enough to brag about anything 30+ hours, it's over. I will not play it.
Nice 5 to 10-hour chapters would be so much better. The reason behind this is because if I'm 20-something hours into a game and I find that the dialog is getting too long, I will instantly stop paying attention to the story and if you want my attention it better be CUTSCENES or something FLASHY and AWESOME. Same goes for my hentai. I will DROP the game into the abyss known as my Recycle Bin(renamed to my Trash Bin because I don't believe "Recycling" has anything to do with computing in the software sense and you aren't going to recycle what is in it) if that damned thing starts to get too long in the dialog.
Short bursts in the dialog will suffice after 20 hours and if it is decided that it is completely and utterly necessary to make it longer, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY MATERIA, move stuff around(animated characters, expressions, mobile acting, panning, flashiness etc.. e.g. Brickroad's MARANDA or just his rm2kfics in general. Excellent examples of nothing BUT dialog and ACTING and animations that make it not stagnant!)
I'll sit down for long periods of time if the thing is interesting. I think the last game I actually sat down all the way was Crestfallen... part 1 and that's kinda old I guess but my attention span is so very terrible these days that you need to give me something that catches my attention and redirects me back to the game.
ACTION! ACTION! ACTION!
Directors say ACTION for a reason! Make the damned thing full of it and lay off the road of stagnation! You can still use RTP as long as you make ACTION, guys!
Playing a game that uses a neat lighting effects, complicating combat systems, and gnarly menu systems isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about story driving the game, effects just compliment it. So STORY it up! :D Read a book and try to write your story like a book. There aren't bouts of:
"<insert text>" said <name> x a baijillion.
I like something more like this:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"<insert text>" <name> murmured to <him/her>self while shuffling through the dark chamber hallway. The only light source resonating from the stairway leading down into somewhere. It blanketed <name>'s face with a dull red haze.
As <name> drew closer to the entrance, dark figures began to shift and dance in the darkness. Playing with <his/her> eyes. Barely visible. All peering. <Name>'s shadow's silhouette began to shift and move and a raw smell of burnt flesh crept into <his/her> nose.
<His/Her> steps echoed and with the echo, a sound accompanied... "<insert text>..." a whisper. "...<insert text>" All around <him/her> the whispers came.
"<insert text>!" <name> screamed. "<insert text>?"
A clicking sound. Behind <him/her>. It began to grow louder until the sound was in sequence with the whispers. <Name> began to laugh menacingly. Flashes of lightning cackled around <him/her>. This was it.
<fin>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Little more animated than just dialog and zero acting. My writing is horrible. I'm a graphics designer. :P Anyway! I've seen it way too many times in the Maker scene and I find it totally annoying. Please fix kthx?
