ASSIST TROPHIES

Well I was very impressed with the update until I read Samurai Goro's descrpition now I'm only impressed. But thanks to the Assist Trophy that silly playable Nintendogs rumor can now be put to rest.

I'm going to guess that most of the game's cameos are gonna be coming from these trophies, and that's cool too.

Holy crap FF12. (Spoilers ya'll, but not big ones.)

Don't waste your time, by the time you learn Unarmed Fighting, aquire the Monk's Armband, and the ability to equip it you'll have far better alternatives available. Too bad we won't be able to see the upcoming expansion that actually allows the development of job like attributes. (unless you live in Japan or are big on importing)

RPGs... or other games I should buy.

SuperNES:
Secret of Mana
Megaman X
Super Mario RPG
Mario Paint
F-Zero
Terranigma (if you have a PAL compatable SuperNES)

Genesis:
Phantsy Stars 2-4
Sonic 3

Do you mean the Wii? If so then maybe, depending on the game quaility that comes out eventually.

Your theroy has but one flaw in it's design. How can you justify using a move that can be activated during battle once as the means to change from one from into another without gimping the character? If Samus requires FS to change into ZS how would she be able to change back? Should only PS Samus have a FS and not ZS? Will I stop refering to things in an abbreviated maner? Should players have to learn how to play both characters without any guarantee that one of them will ever see the light of day? How would you be able to train as that character? And what will become of all that Zero Suit Samus character foucs over the past coverage?

Wouldn't it be awesome if Shiek gets treated to the TP style too.

Now if only they would come out and tell us how both Samus's Zero Suit and Zelda's Sheik come into play.

RPG Gender Swap!

FFT:

Suprisingly the only characters that could change genders without anyone noticing would be either Mustadio or Ramza. Mustadio could get away with it since he had almost no in-game character development to begin with, and as for Ramza one can simply look towards FF12's Ashe for all the proof needed. (Basicily, Ramza and Ashe roughly share the same personality. Ashe is alittle more vengence driven then Ramza but their goals are the same 'Save the kingdom, Save the world'. They both start as nobles only to eventually fall from grace, and they both kick butt on higher beings) Overall the only differences that Ramza would've had to face is the fact that instead of an idealistic noble brat/pain in the ass turned hero he would've been an idealistic noble tomboy/pain in the ass turned heroine.

Ovelia can't change due to her role as a political barganing chip which keeps Delita male. To that end almost every major political figure has to be male as well. In fact because it closely follows the Middle Ages' social climate it's really isn't possible to have more than a handful of aggresive or ambitious females (which would be needed to swap a pair of siblings around), and the only female characters that fit in this catagory (Queen Ruvelia, Agrias, and maybe Meliadoul) can't be changed without consequences to the story (with a male Ruvelia there would be no story, Agrias would have to be an old man to fulfill the role of Ovelia's bodyguard and that would lead to questions of why he's not in a higher postion, and Meliadoul has the same problem that alot of the potential male swappers face, a sibling of oppisite gender, but she could still get away with the swap as a younger brother since she had that tacked on feel to her to begin with).

FFTA:

Much easier thanks in part to the not-nearly-as-large cast. The answer is of course yes. Mewt and by proxy Llednar could both be female (in fact it'd make more sense) and no one would notice or care (Llednar had an exclusive twink class anyway so there would be no change from male to female). Everyone else not really. You could have Marche as a lass, but due to the fact that all females in the game were treated as Viera there's no way anyone could be female without being Viera. Ritz while not male or Viera is treated like one, and it's most likely that Shara would also have to change races as well most likely it would be Hume and that would change too much around. The only other Female Queen Remdi also can't change due to the fact that Mewt real world parent has to be on the down and out and I don't think this game could come out on the GBA with Mewt's mother filling that role. Babus, Ezel, and Nono are all tied to their jobs and can't change into a Viera and Montblanc being Nono's brother is also tied to Moggle.

Generica - [RMVX..?]

I'll throw my two cents onto the project too.

1) Not only do I agree with Mewd's suggestion earlier to make the characters suriviors from a previous attempt to take out evil overlord type, but I, if I may, would like to expand on it. For instance the game could start just as the afore mentioned army is getting wiped out. The four (or the final amount) characters along with (if any) surivors are all trying to escape from behind enemy lines and regroup at either their homebase or the nearest safe haven. At this point one could have multiple paths to use to get to the destination like crossing through the montainous high lands filled with long and narrow caverns and treacherous passes, or braving the uncharted sea hopping from island to island while battling vicious sea monsters, or even ducking and dodging through the thick of enemy territory using stealth and guile to elude pursuers while slipping by dangerous ambushes, ect...

Now depending on the route and possibliy on the actions taken during the trek back and assumming that the enemy launches a counter-attack against the characters home or destination they could lend a hand during the battle using newfound abilities and infomation to aid their allies in the defence of the nation (or they could arrive to a pile of burning rubble if they're late) (To avoid forcing players to go down an optimun route one could make the overall outcome of the battle the same. A forced retreat.)

One option for an after that scenario could be to have the characters go out to a netural country to look for arms and armours (or infomation pretaining to) for use to turn the tide with. (the country could be on the oppisite side of the enemy territory allowing more than one use of the multiple routes) Another is to find a weapon or weapons that can defeat the evil overlord type. (Albeit cliche but then again so are Evil OverLord Types) or even a combination of the two. (Like after getting the recipe to make weapons and armours to fight the enemy the characters are warned that unless the evil overlord type is defeated the world will know no true peace.)

This is all just a suggestion so if you don't want to use it you don't have to use it.

2) I was thinking that rather than having all the character's develop in the same way they could develop in different ways like one with a skill tree, another from weapons, the third through combat, and the final from good old shops and items. However, it seems that the blank slate idea is more popular than having preset characters. So I'll suggest that instead of characters developing differently lets make the classes develop differently. That way one class could grow from weapons and armour, another by absorbing enemy abilities and stat bonuses, a third through a skill tree, a fourth one from useage of the abilities, and so on.

Also if the whole magically inept army gets wiped out by a pyshical powerhouse then perhaps giving characters classes they would naturally start with. Then in a move similar to Chrono Triggers magic training montage the characters could also learn the basic magic classes. And once you have those you could have them develop combination classes like in Dragon Quest's 6 & 7.

A non-battle ability you could add to the repertorie is a mind-reading ability. Also don't forget to add the start fight now ability.

3) I've already given my opinion on the whole blank slate topic along with material to use reguardless of which one takes the cake so I have nothing more to add at this time.

Also, this is probably the most I can do for this project since I lack the tools on this end of the process to do anything productive so I am unable to assist much further in this project. If you need more ideas I can give them but that's about it.

RPG Gender Swap!

Of course Hamlet was awesome. He's so awesome even Wilber from Charlotte's Web got nothin' on him. But, if a guy had to choose between a super pet or super bacon and he had to make the choice based on the cuteness factor. What would he choose?

Stories in Games: A Counterpoint to Usual Thinking

You are right that stories can make a game that couldn't on its own gameplay. I can't imagine playing through Illusion of Gaia as many times as I have without that strong narrative. I mean without a good story line the game would have been nothing more than a series of (still fun) straight shot fetch quests without any ability to backtrack until the later half of the game.

A good story can do wonders for a game. It's just a matter of writing a good story.

Of course it helps if your story line doesn't feel like it had been inspired by the latest issue of Shonen Jump.

RPG Gender Swap!

Illusion of Gaia:

Will as the femmine type wouldn't change much. I think Wilie could be interpreted as a gal's name so she could be Wilie Croft and no one would notice...

Unless you were Kara and Lily and by that extension Lance since Kara would have to be a prince for that to work and I don't see how or why a prince would have a pet pig. Lily and Lance are just pure interchangable except for the moments of confict between Lily and Kara over Will. So it's a NG.

Terranigma:

Ark as a rambuncious lass wouldn't have any serious consequences except to change Elle and Merilin and even then Merilin's passes could have just as easily been made by a male. And even though ElleCape could have been know as WeaverCape it would have been a little bit tougher to pull off a Prince Elle since the scared routine silence isn't what guy's are known to do plus you'd be cursing him out everytime an oppotuinty for him to be useful arises only to have him play innocent bystander. But it still could be doable.

Edit: I suddenly realize that there is one scene in near the end of the game that could keep Ark male since it wouldn't have had as much kick to it if it were the other way around.
