MASTERMACHINE'S PROFILE

This is the MasterMachine, a future writer/game designer, enthusiast of retro games , and one bored nerd with nothing else to do all in one. Currently a student at Ball State University, I am planning on going into the gaming industry one small step at a time. As of now, I plan to start small and make, at least, a couple of RPGs, as well as possibly review some games here and there. Currently, I'm being weighed down by college, so progress on any and all titles may be a bit delayed. On the flip side, if I can find the time to settle down and get back into track on game making, I might post something soon, before Halloween comes around. As a hint on my latest project, it'll be a dark, gritty tale with a character that apparently has amnesia. Keep on the lookout for any and all future projects to come, for you may never know when I'll submit my latest ideas.

Custom Title/Game Over Screens

Earlier on, I downloaded a couple of images and tried messing around with them in Photoshop so that I could make myself a title screen and a game over screen for my current project. Later on, I tried them out in RPG Maker 2003, only for the customized pictures to not work. Of course, I tried out the original pictures that the customized pictures were based off of and they worked perfectly. My question is, when it comes to making personal title/game over screens, is there a specific program I have to use or is it that I'm using the correct program, but I apparently did something wrong?

If you have a chance to have another RTP...

Yeh seriously. I'm on for an RTP that has both fantasy, modern, and sci-fi themes, and wish that they have handful of charsets fitted for three themes!

Yeah, maybe something a bit more rugged and serious next time around. We've got a lot of bright and shiny at the moment and can always use those, but gritty and solemn are few and far between.

Not that I don't love chipper and bright.

I'm all up for a new RTP with a dark, gritty undertone. I think that there should be themes for both serious and jovial atmospheres, as well as plentiful options for fantasy, post-modern, and science fiction themes. The more, the better.

I take it that you mean RM2k3, right? Try looking around in this site for everything you may need.

Horrible Game Endings

A lot of older games, especially arcade games from the later 80's-early 90's, had that same shitty ending:

Congraduration!
The End!

I first saw this ending after beating Side Arms: Hyper Dyne on Capcom Classics Collection Remixed for the PSP. I wasn't given much of a backstory, I never knew who I faced, I never knew why I was fighting, and I never got to know who the main characters where and what became of them after the fight. All that I knew was that I went through one hell of a battle for nothing. Oh well, least I got a decent score to show no one! After playing even more games from that era, I realized that this wasn't the only game to feature such a bland, tasteless ending! There are even games that don't have an ending or even restart after you fight the final boss without even giving you a congratulatory statement. I understand that it was from a different era, an era I fully accept, having been introduced to gaming via the Sega Genesis, but it's endings like these that make me feel empty and unsatisfied, hence making them some of the worst endings I've ever seen.

I wanna be the guy!

If there was ever a game that was so ridiculous, it was awesome, this has got to be that game. Heck, back when I last played IWBTG, I couldn't even get past the "apple" trees, but I keep coming back for more! So ridiculously hard (even on the easiest difficulty), yet so addictive...

The Most Important Aspect of a Game

As a question to the veterans and fellow amateurs of the RPG Maker community, what do you all consider to be the most important aspect of a game you are working on? Right now, as it stands, I've spend these last couple of weeks messing around with RPG Maker 2003 and I'm beginning to get a hang of the code. I have to admit that my current project is a bit amateurish, for most of the sprites and music that I am using are either RTP stuff from RPG Maker 2000/2003 or were downloaded from http://www.vgmusic.com/ or http://charas-project.net/, depending on the content of either site. However, on the other hand, my main focus on my project is on storytelling and objectives. Since I am a bit of a writer, I'm sort of writing a novel alongside my project and basing much of the content in my game around it. I understand the basic principles behind novelization (i.e. genre, setting, themes, etc.) and even though I'm not a perfect programmer, the functions behind the program that I am using are simple enough to understand and put together. Right now, my main priority relies on the storytelling aspect above everything else. Without an engine, how can you build the frame around it to make a car?

Give me your games

I've got a demo on the way. Expect me to release a few screenshots in about a week or two. I'll give myself a month and a half at most to create a demo, so it'll be a bit of a wait until its first beta is released.

Spate of celebrity deaths (Michael Jackson)

Sucks to think that Michael Jackson was only 50 years old when he died, especially since both of my parents have, so far, lived for almost as long as him. He left quite the legacy in such a short time, even though he went through his fair share of controversy.

If you include David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Farrow Fawcett, and now Billy Mays, that's FIVE big-name celebrity deaths in only a month! Crazy that it all happened so quickly when you think about it, but hey, things like this happen.

Top 3 things in life

1. Food
2. Family and friends
3. Anything that can keep me entertained (that includes reading)

Howdy!

Sorry for the short introduction. Don't usually post on forums that don't belong to close friends. To add on to previously explained information, I am a sophomore at Ball State University, which is obviously located in Indiana. Even though I have a major in General Studies, I am taking minors in Digital Media and Publishing, as well as a minor in Creative Writing for I am a bit of a writer. Of course, as to be expected, I hope to go into the gaming industry, so I might as well start out fresh somewhere. My hobbies include games (especially retro-gaming), television, internet, reading, writing, martial arts, etc. Trying to think of more to add on, but since it's rather late and I'm already getting rather tired, it sure is hard to think of anything else to say.

By the way, as much as I like commercially-sold RPGs, recommendations of games made with RPG Maker 2000/2003 are also welcome.
