MASTERMACHINE'S PROFILE

This is the MasterMachine, a future writer/game designer, enthusiast of retro games , and one bored nerd with nothing else to do all in one. Currently a student at Ball State University, I am planning on going into the gaming industry one small step at a time. As of now, I plan to start small and make, at least, a couple of RPGs, as well as possibly review some games here and there. Currently, I'm being weighed down by college, so progress on any and all titles may be a bit delayed. On the flip side, if I can find the time to settle down and get back into track on game making, I might post something soon, before Halloween comes around. As a hint on my latest project, it'll be a dark, gritty tale with a character that apparently has amnesia. Keep on the lookout for any and all future projects to come, for you may never know when I'll submit my latest ideas.

What are you thinking about right now?

It's been a few days now, but out of general curiosity, why haven't more people looked at this topic?

Am I doing something wrong? Is the title unappealing? Am I not a good writer? I mean, seriously, if GUZZLER and that Snow Punk story are going to get decent recognition, then why isn't a post-modern/cyberpunk martial arts story getting much feedback at all? I mean, it's got ninjas and power armor. What more could you ask for? Then again, this isn't a creative writing class, so who am i kidding.

Lets Play: An un-reviewed RM game!

I don't think that it's a bad idea. Personally, I'm interested in seeing under-appreciated and complete games. As for me, even though I don't know how I'm going to do it, I'd probably play Shepard's Call: Revenge of the Genie.

Your First Game

I've actually known about RPG Maker 2003 for a while now, ever since I was in, I think, 8th or 9th grade and I attempted to make a game with it at that point in my life. But anyways, my first project was going to be "epic". I tried formulating this idea where the main character was a samurai who shamed his armored samurai father, so the samurai main character was going to get revenge or something, but his father is super powerful, so he has to go to the future and get something powerful in order to stop him and there was going to be something about this window above his father's castle which was going to be like this dimensional gate or something. I also had sequels in the works, even though I didn't even finish the first game. They were going to take place in the "future". The second game was going to take place in a future where the main character's father is like this dictatorial ruler, so it was going to end in an epic final fight. The last game was going to take place in a "post-apocalyptic future" where after destroying his evil father, the main character was going to go back in time and destroy his evil father, who is actually like this god-like creature, before he had the chance to rule over the future or some strange crap like that.

Okay, I admit it, it was pretty out there and fucking ridiculous, not to mention it was going to be RTP only as well, but it was my first attempt at a game, even if it was pure and utter crap. Sadly enough, my brother would replace RPG Maker 2003 with XP, probably because he thought of it as an "improvement" or something like that, so I would never see my projects, nor would I ever see the program, ever again...until time has passed. Even though my project is long gone by now, I have found a download for RPG Maker 2003, so I've been working on other, less ridiculous projects ever since. Seriously, imagine trying to make a "futuristic" setting with only RTP. Boy, what was I on when I thought of that! But hey, first game ever attempted and deserving of its spot.

What Makes Stereotypical jRPGs Terrible?

Basically, I'm saying that the walking speed in any RPG is only annoying when the maps are larger in proportion. Like SMT Imagine Online- I got sick of the game very fast because the maps were HUGE and you walked like you were wading through Jello. I wouldn't mind if you were either much faster, or the maps didn't have to be so huge and empty.

I ALMOST didn't play SMT Imagine for this reason alone. Just seeing my character run in the air at a snail's pace kind of irritated me, but after getting used to the wonky speed, I was suckered into the trap. Besides, how many MMORPGs out there right now have a post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk setting and let you shoot freaking demons in the face with a shotgun, and are free? I'll be taking a slight break from it since classes start tomorrow, but in all honesty, if they changed the default speed or just gave you the option to walk instead, it could have been a lot more fun.

And don't even get me started on the "silent protagonist" or the "destined hero" plot. They're both so overused and cliched by now, it's almost a joke. Look, I know that it's only a game, but if you're trying to tell an epic story revolving around an individual and if you're not giving me a shooting game, at least let him interact in some way. And now, don't tell me that "God" sent him on an almighty quest to find the missing television remote and use it to save the world from the Almighty Joey. Use something more original, like place him in a situation he doesn't want to belong in that some asshole put him in, so let him find a way to either get out of it or solve it. If you're giving me an "original" game, use some original ideas.

Nothing is more annoying than constant random encounters. Look, there's a save station over there and my characters' health points are low. I've had ten inescapable encounters in a row and I need to use the only tent I have and...FUCK! MORE HIGH LEVELED MONSTERS! AND I CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM THE BATTLE! Ugh...nothing is worse than that situation. Just the whole, "Oh, you're barely there...ha ha, made you look!" moment is just fucking bullshit. Bullshit moments like that happen in other games too, but there's nothing worse than plugging away twenty minutes into a role-playing game due to poor mapping design only to have it wasted in the end. Look, lower the encounter rates, give me creatures at enough of a level to tag 1/16th of the dungeon boss, and let me run away if I have to instead of making it a random chance of success. Simple, isn't it?

favorite anime movie?

Akira was a good movie, though I personally prefer the comic book series it's based off of. With a whopping six encyclopedia-sized issues, it's a hell of a lot longer, and because of that, the story was a lot more fleshed out and there were quite a few things that didn't make it into the film.

On the other hand, my favorite anime has got to be Princess Mononoke, It was one of the first anime films I ever saw and my golly, it's what got me into Japanese animation, along with Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and the Adult Swim line-up, back when they had Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, and the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series all on the same night.

Prepare to get used to it...

How do you like your hero?

Medium-Rare.

Actually, I prefer a hero that blends into the crowd, one who actually acknowledges his presence and those around him. I prefer a somewhat realistic hero that has a special important to the plot over the Marty Stu silent protagonist. He could a hero or an anti-hero, but one thing is for sure, he has his purpose, so he must fulfill it, even if it brings certain costs. In other words, my ideal hero is the party member who is central to the plot, like Alex from Lunar, Chaz from Phantasy Star 4, or Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, to give popular examples.

Now that I think of it, as a hint on my latest project, the amnesic hero may play an important role...

Worst game you personally do like.

METAL GEAR SOLID.

If they were to cut back on the cutscenes and concentrate more on the stellar gameplay this would be an awesome game. But frankly, I could care less what happens to Mr.Snake. The cutscenes only turned me off to the fellow, and I found Otacon really annoying.

But did I mention it has great gameplay? I guess I'm 50/50 on this one...

Shouldn't this be in the "Best game you personally don't like." section?

improper

Hmm...so, what's improper?
