An examination of combining videos and gaming
author=Billwilliams
This can be done but can it be done well?
Thanks a good question. I can't say for sure, but I think it's worth checking out. Personally, I've never been able to complete a full length game. But I think that if I can start mixing in videos, which I know I can create, then it help motivate me to complete the game.
I also think it might be kind of cool to play. ^_^
author=PokemaniacAh! Good to know. Wow- 544x416? That's not even logical...
Actually, only XP is 640x480; VX is 544x416.
Maybe I should create a five minute game with the different RM tools to test out video settings, quality, and possibilities.

It would be really fun to make(and anywhere from really fun to really hilarious to watch) a game where you had cutscenes with you and some friends dressed up as the characters, and you acted out the cutscenes. That would really play to the strengths of a no-productions-value, low-expectation, fun-and-playful platform like RPG Maker
It totally would be! I was actually considering doing this for a modern day setting, and getting fellow college students to play as the characters. Just an experimental idea.
Now I want to go buy a bunch of nerf swords.

While the usual default for watching youtube videos is 320x240, exporting the video in the first place is a different story. I always export my videos in 1280 x 720- I know I would have to export them in the smaller size for RPG maker, but it's good to know that 640x480 is the correct exporting size for XP and VX.
Personally I've only worked with 2k3, but I'm glad to have the reference. Maybe It's time I stepped up to the newer programs.
Thanks for the info- and glad have the input on the "password" concept.

An examination of combining videos and gaming
Hey all,
Long time reader, rare- if ever poster. I'm getting that itch to try and make a game again, but this time I want to try something possibly different.
To explain, filming and videos are my first love. I produce commercials and videos for companies using my own equipment and it pays (some) of the bills.
I would really like to explore the idea of utilizing the ability to play video clips inside of RM programs. I'm not asking for help or anything like that, I would just like to get a discussion on some concepts going.
Questions and Concepts for you to possibly answer or entertain:
1. Q: Have you played a game that used original cut scenes? (original meaning actually original, not just rehashed clips of some other anime/game/movie).
2. Q: What's your opinion on using real people as graphics in a video game? (personally I've never seen it done well, but if there is a game that does then I would love a link).
3. Concept: I want to take some time and experiment with what I can put together using various video clip formats and sizes. But here's an idea I had for playing videos that are either too large or just don't deserve to be crushed and squished and uglified to fit in-game.
What if the videos were downloaded separately, like in different folders, and to unlock the video scenes, passwords would be required.
For example, let's say a new character is a about to be introduced (or something). The game, could give the player a password to write down along with the option to SAVE. The player can save, go to the folder, type in the password, and then watch the video and go back to playing.
Think this is too much for to ask of the player? These are just some whimsical notions, feel free to comment, support or bash as appropriate.
Thanks!

Is a FF Legend 3 battle system possible with RM2k3?
That's so cool of you, ariedonus! Thanks a lot- that is a major boost of motivation = D
I think I will have the characters face the bottom of the screen for things like back attack, which will just consist of placing downward facing sprites in the correct battle sprite slot. Awesome!
Thanks again!

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I thought about using smaller sprites for the characters, and when the attack and have to move forward I could move the sprite back a few pixels. We'll see how that works!
If I get further into it I'll post my results. That was such a fun battle system : D
EDIT: Just had a thought! If I make the attacks "ranged" they won't step forward? Maybe then I can have the sprites step up through pixel moving! *goes off to plan*

Is a FF Legend 3 battle system possible with RM2k3?
Hey everyone,
I found my old copy of Final Fantasy 3 Legend for the gameboy, and now I want to visit my nostalgic past by tweaking around with the rm2k3 battle system to sort of mimic this.
Here's a picture of the battle system.

As you can see, the characters are facing top of the screen (their backs are to you) and the monsters face toward the screen, like monsters in rmxp or the ancient Dragon Quest/warriors.
Now logically, I could use rmxp and make the battle sprites just the "walking up" sprites of the characters, but I'd love to see them step upward and backward without too much difficulty.
Does anyone know of any RM games that do this? And again, just curious if it IS doable- I'm not asking anyone to do it for me, I'd just like someone to give me the okay before I spend too much time into it ; p

They're so tiny! That have a certain feel to them though- it makes the monsters look HUGE in comparison. Makes is seem scarier in a way. : )
