I'm very happy to see that this game is still in progress. The original game had some really good ideas, so it's nice to see that this game will expand on that (hopefully) to an extent where we'll be able to understand it more.

^^ I like the other portraits art style a bit more too, but I definitely think this one works nicely.

@ Nedras: I might be getting too technical here again, but that's 14 games you listed, while the other list is 63, and I don't think it's actually compiled by any one person - Giant Bomb works like any other wiki, and wikis have categories (called "concepts" on GB in this case) that automatically list things which are tagged with those "concepts".
Either way, it's actually a drop in the ocean relative to all the games that are made this year, let alone all the games ever. You say it's more frequent in horror/thriller for instance, and it's technically true, but here are the games in the genre that don't have it to my knowledge:
Alan Wake
Siren
Siren 2
Forbidden Siren
ObsCure
Alone in the Dark
Alone in the Dark 2
Alone in the Dark 3
Alone in the Dark: A New Nightmare
Alone in the Dark 5/remake
Silent Hill 4
Silent Hill: Origins
Silent Hill: Homecoming
Just about any one of the dozen or so Resident Evils
Fatal Frame 1
Fatal Frame 2
Sublustrum
Penumbra
Penumbra: Black Plague
Amnesia: Dark Descent
Amnesia: Machine for Pigs
Dreadout
Murdered: Soul Suspect
Alien: Isolation
Dead Space
Dead Space 2
Dead Space 3
Dead Space: Extraction
Solarix
System Shock 1
System Shock 2
Amy
Neverending Nightmares
Silence of The Sleep
White Night
One Last Night: Deadline
Dino Crisis 1-3
Stalker
Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason
That's 35-45 games I can recall without using anything to assist me (depending on how many goddamn Resident Evils there are by now), and all of those are commercial, too. I admit I don't know the Japanese VN/romance market anywhere near as well, and about 40-60% of the second list is just those games. There are enough exceptions there too, though, like 9 Hours, 9 Persons 9 Doors + Virtue's Last Reward, Danganrompa, Kana: Last Sister (or whatever its exact name was) and more. If I were to try recounting the more mainstream genres like FPS that don't include it, we would be here all night.
What is your point exactly? Of course the games that don't have the theme of rape weigh out of the games that do involve it. Never did I say that there are more games that involve the theme of rape then there are games that don't involve.
I'm not going continue going back and forth strenuously with you as there is no point and doesn't help the developer whatsoever. (After all this is a review on THEIR game.) Have a nice day.

^^^^(That is literally why I came to despise Misao. I would have liked it if not for the cheap rape background put on the titular character. There are games I liked from that list mostly because it's not clear if it's rape or because the rape factor is pure speculation)
--------------------
More than complaining about how many games display/portray rape, we should complain about how it is portrayed.
I agree with that statement. The majority of times when I hear about a taboo present in a game I try to stay away from said game. From what I see, a lot of developers do more harm then good because they portray the issue very poorly.
Now, do all games with taboos in them present them poorly? No. I play When The Laughter Stopped and I definitely didn't think it sexualized rape in away. However, I did feel a bit sick after playing it. It got very graphic--and again, not my cup of tea. I have no idea though why the dev would make a biography-like game about one of their friends issue--and basically say that he never wanted said friend to play it. Which is understanding--but why make the game? Ift, whatever.
I do think though that if a dev wants to portray it--they should portray it well. I just rather it not be used for shock value or another copy and paste game.
And yeah, Misao is basically a horror B-Movie in game format ;P
Chivi-chivik
They want to put drama in their stories, and that's hella fine, but how they do it is the problem. They don't research enough or they treat the theme disrespectfully (this is specially applied to japanese VNs and otomes), and that's very bad.
Oh, yeah. There's some nasty ones out there that I wouldn't even CONSIDER going near.
Chivi-chivik
Being aware is the first step. Still using it in drama but writing/portraying it well is how it will be solved, even if it's just a little move. :)
(Heck, this could be applied to many other traumas and mental illnesses...)
Definitely. If you include the topic you should some research on it before including it into a story otherwise you can almost desensitize it--and I don't think the dev meant to do that.

So yeah, thank you for the review, it may be harsh, but it's fair, and it's what I need to get better, right ? I hope my answer is as fair and satisfying.
Sigma, I think you're actually handling this pretty well for a dev. I've seen a lot of situation where devs are given criticism and they automatically turn sour. So, kudos to you for not doing that. :)

Is it, though? I've read reviews on thousands of games by now, new and old (to shape my understanding of game design and game industry in general, & often TVTropes pages + other material. Yet, out of commercial games, at least, I can only recall The Witcher series, Dragon Age series, Mars: War Logs and a couple other dark WRPGs, + Hotline Miami 2 and uhm... what else? (besides the dark hentai stuff that has always been there for 0.00001% that consumes it?) I'm probably missing something, but on the whole, I would say our medium is much cleaner in this regard when you compare it to the percentage in rape in books, films, comics and especially TV shows.
Hmm... yeah, I'd definitely say that rape is more prominent in books, films, comics, and TV than in games. However, I don't think that dismisses the fact that are a "good" amount of games that portray it, whether the game is poorly portraying it or not.
author=Me ;D
Rape is portrayed in games too much, and most of the time it's poor.
I feel like I need to elaborate on this part because I feel as if I may or may not have communicated what I was saying properly. I think that rape in games--well, I wouldn't say it's common in all games, but I do think it is common in more genres than others. Those being horror, thriller, romance (Yep, I hate to add this one to the list, but I do see rape in a lot of VNs are actually bishoujos or otomes!), and more of the darker genres that all go along with it. And with those games, I feel like the idea, presence, or threat of rape is definitely used way too much in those type of games. And going back to...

Is it, though?
Here's a list of games where the idea (And by idea, I mean inferences, themes, etc.), prescence, or threat is actually there. I think the sad part of this list is that ALL of these are from the top of my head.
Silent Hill 2
M/1 (Of course.)
School Days
Misao
Beyond: Two Souls
Corpse Party
Heavy Rain
Lisa
Grand Theft Auto V
Dreaming Mary
The Day The Laughter Stopped (Which was already listed above.)
Yume Nikki
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea

Welp, that's a lot of games--it's sad too, because a good amount of those games I listed are more mainstream titles! :/

For anyone interested, I found this list someone else already made.
That's a lot of games :/

Debating if I want to review this or not. I usually like horror games, but I'm not sure if this would fit as a horror game besides the limited amount of jump-scares and themes. Perhaps I am overthinking.

Pentagonbuddy, you basically summed up my thoughts 100%. Rape is portrayed in games too much, and most of the time it's poor. Poor portrayal, well.... it seems to me that the author is almost desensitizing the subject in some sort of way.
Good review. I do too hope in the future that the developer doesn't stray in this direction when making another game.

For your first game, I think you did pretty good. The use of RTP wasn't bad, there wasn't any game breaking bugs (besides the sound files), there's a good variety of endings, and the scares were well done as well. Good job.
Although... not going to lie, I didn't really like this game that much. Not because of the graphics, gameplay, or music, but... the story.

Besides that, I didn't really see much of a plot. And a lot of the other endings I saw or read I thought were basically for shock value too. Murder, suicide... I don't know. It just all seems like cheap writing to me because of the way it's portrayed. I suppose it's just not my cup of tea. Anyways...
I did think the graphics were very pretty. The CG's were nice too. However, I couldn't read some of the text on the speech bubbles until going to the picture folder and reading it like that.
They are a few typos here and there... but it seems like you've been notified of those! I do want to congratulate you on getting all those downloads so quickly! Seems like I wasn't the only one who was "baited" ;) Alright I'm getting a bit out of hand XD;;
I look forward to more of your games! Hopefully we'll get to see more from you in the future!

The amount of rape in video games that I see everywhere now truly saddens me. I feel like it's the go to idea always because of the shock value behind it.
Now, I didn't think you portrayed it in an extremely bad way.. but it's just--agh! I don't know. I feel like it's something I've seen too many times before, especially in horror games--and especially to female leads.

EDIT
To SigmaKedavra--Unfortunately it is a common plot "twist" entertwined into writing nowadays whether it's subtle or not. I understand it was not your intention of portraying it in a "vile" sort of way, I really just don't want you to attract the wrong crowd or perhaps send the wrong message.
