Commercial gams - a philosophical & practicality debate

Here's another issue for you. I'm looking through the list of newly added games, and find a few that I think look pretty cool. Commercial. Commercial. Holy shit, expensive commercial. Commercial... and so on. I don't buy commercial games online. Never have, never will.
I'm with sbester on this. I don't buy commercial online games, either.

You guys don't use Steam?

Commercial gams - a philosophical & practicality debate

I'm really glad that this change is looking more and more likely to be involved. I really hope it does come to pass as I'd like to see what type of feedback I can get while I develop my game.

Issue with the Game Submission rules.

You are correct, Locke. A game is indie if it is developed and distributed by the developer, and no Publisher is involved. Insomniac Games for example, is an indie developer. (They don't answer to anyone but themselves).

Of course, they have to pass regulations for their games to be allowed on PS3, but Sony doesn't fund their games.

A few other issues that should be discussed: Reviews, Media, MakerScore and Competitions/Events in relation to commercial games. All of these things could cause problems especially with things that demand an opinion like Reviews and LPs.

The potential for complaints if a game gets a less-than-stellar review or LP is high - especially considering money and a person's 'livelihood' being a part of the picture.

Also, we could face a horde of game fans who join the site just to add favourable reviews to a game that might just be average when compared to others on the site. Either way, it spells trouble and possible conflict.

Then there are lockers and the use of them to avoid the rule (if we go it) of non-hosting. And is it fair to pit commercial games against hobby ones in competitions?

Also, Piracy. If someone didn't buy the game but references it (and possibly references that they did not pay for the game) are we, as a site, liable in any way? Do we have to police this?

If it seems the Staff are taking a while to make up their minds, keep in mind that there are many different variables to consider, not just bandwidth or quality issues.

Commercial games don't have to be included in competitions, at least not in my opinion. Or having a separate competition for commercial games would be perfectly fine.

Me personally, I just want feedback from the community to make the best possible game I can. People who can't buy it can play a demo, and buy it later if they like. (And the more tenacious ones will just pirate it anyway). As for policing people who openly admit to pirate it. That's up to you guys, you are under no 'legal' obligation to do so. If you want to have a strict 'anti-pirate' policy, then I highly recommend getting on people's cases or at the very least deleting comments.

I can't speak for everyone who would want to post a commercial game here, but me personally I would try to be as respectful as I could.

Issue with the Game Submission rules.

I think the new policy you proposed sounds extremely reasonable, Kentona. Offering a free playable demo and getting some feedback via development without expecting anyone to buy anything via RMN is totally acceptable. If you do make that change, I'd greatly appreciate it.

As for threatening the "hobbyist" nature of games. I would think having competition would spur you to do better. If someone else making a "better" game than you bothers you that much, then you have a whole 'nother slew of problems. Better to just make the games that you like, and if someone posts a crap game that's only out to get a buck, and doesn't seem like fun, then report the game.

But if someone is sharing a game they're working on and plan on selling, but offers a free demo, and just wants feedback on how to make that game better, I don't see what's wrong with that.

The focus should be on making new games, not getting hung up on whether or not a commercial game threatens you. People who make crap games (commercial or otherwise) are going to make them regardless. If a game is of poor quality then the community should comment and rate it accordingly, so that people will know offhand how crap a game is.

Here's a question, though, what would be the benefit to RMN for hosting commercial games and placing them alongside the hobbyist?

on the flipside, what would a commercial indie dev look for from RMN? (A portal just to link back to their official website? Would the tools we have here (blogs, pages, notifications, hosting, etc..) be of any real use to them?)

There is a lot to ponder here and I haven't given it much thought yet.

I just wanted to host the game to get some feedback. See what people thought, how I could improve it. Feedback is always appreciated. I'm not even trying to sell my game yet, I'm still making it. I just plan on making it commercial when I finish it. I only brought up the discussion to be upfront and honest.

Do we have to have this discussion so often? It's RMN's house, with RMN's rules. There are lots of places to dump your sales pitch and hope for hits.

As I said above, I'm not trying to go for a sales pitch. I just want to share my game's info and get some feedback, see what people think of current and future demos, how I can improve, etc. If I were just trying to sell the game I wouldn't even bother posting here. XD

I guess a better question of it would be, is it alright to post my game and get feedback and stuff as long as I'm not trying to "sell" the game directly on this site and more just going for feedback?

Issue with the Game Submission rules.

For starters, restricting "commercial" projects to whatever engines you have listed on RMN would restrict some projects. But honestly, if you're worried about something minecraft-esque it would become mightily apparent very quickly that it was drowning out the rest, and could be removed. (I'm sure folks would report it if it felt out of place.)

Hobbyists are people who make indie games for fun, and never plan on selling them.

Indie developers are ones who make games because it's what they want to do as a career, or their life, and can either have their game free or plan on selling it (their own discretion). The term indie just means you don't have a publisher paying for your expenses and has a say in the game.

Like if Activision were publishing my game, I wouldn't be indie.

I really don't want slick barely-indie devs parachuting in and dropping their games here and then never returning, though.

You don't have to be commercial to do this. Most hobbyists do this with their projects. Plus, it would be much better to host a game where the developer is actually taking it seriously instead of making a crap FF fangame that has no originality or forethought (and will likely never be finished).

Issue with the Game Submission rules.

Yeah I'm not saying everyone who wants to post a commercial game should be able to do so. I'd want to keep it within the RM Community. I was just curious if I could submit my game that I eventually plan on selling if it got accepted on Steam (Via Greenlight) or Desura. I mostly wanted to share my game to get feedback.

Out of curiosity (haven't found a proper section for it) where could I post a topic about my game?
