SILVIERA'S PROFILE

I am amateur game developer, and even more amateur reviewer, currently in and out of college.

I am currently developing a game called Eternity: The Black Star along with Solitayre, which is nearing its first release.

I have extremely high standards, so please don't be offended if you believe that I have reviewed your game unfairly. My focus is on improving the body of a work primarily by pointing out what I think are its flaws, but feel free to ignore me if I am wrong (and I will be).

Which version?

XP is my preferred maker. I hear that VX has improved scripting capabilities, but thus far I haven't found anything that couldn't be done in XP.

I'm not sure why everyone is in love with rm2k3 battle system. It tends to be far slower paced than even its predecessor and you pretty much have to work around rather than with the default damage equations in order to make something that is balanced fairly well. I've also seen countless promising projects destroyed by a limited understanding of how broken the Agility stat is compared to everything else.

Since I can jump into XP and manually edit the default battle system (allow skills to crit, make Guarding actually worth doing, etc.), it wins hands down for me. Not to mention scripting allows for a few amazing minigames.

Has anyone heard of the shooting at the Pittsburgh LA Fitness?

I guess I was just assuming over 48 years of life there had to be at least some point where he had made friends. In my case most of those people have come from High School. He said something along the lines of 100 women have told him he was a "nice guy" at some point or another, so to me it sounded like if he worked at it he could have built a friendship with any number of people.

Though maybe friendship with a woman was not enough for him.

I guess I'm too young to understand that, especially since I grew up in an age where keeping in contact with friends has become ridiculously easy.

Really reading blogs will never be anything more than skimming the surface of what he was actually thinking. The part I don't get is why he insisted on taking out his frustration on a random group of strangers rather than quietly withdrawing from the world. Not that I condone the latter option, but at the very least it would be more understandable.

Then again he might have just done this for attention. After all, most of his blog seems to be pointing people towards what lead him to that point. Not sure what the point of that is after you're already dead, especially since he seemed to be convinced he was on his way to heaven no matter what he did.

The more I type the more confused I become about the whole thing.

Just read the whole blog here. Very depressing stuff. Red flags all over the place of course, but I guess if he was as unpopular as he claimed there just weren't enough people reading it to notice what was going on.

More than anything else to me it sounded like the guy seriously needed a hobby. Seemed like at some point in his life he became obsessed with the fact that if he didn't have a girlfriend he was worthless (which is something a lot of people can probably relate to), and let it eat away at him for 30 years until he finally snapped.

I hate hearing about stuff like this.

Summer Screenshot Spectacular!

You start the game with three skills and every time you level up you gain an ability point, which you can use to learn a new skill or upgrade an existing one.

The main character easily has the biggest skill list and that's the one you're looking at, so hopefully things progress slowly enough that the player's brain doesn't explode.

Here are a few screens from my upcoming project, Eternity: The Black Star.

First up, the character creation screen.

Followed by the main character on the world map.

And lastly showcasing the main cast's battlers as well as my favorite skill thus far.

I'm particularly proud of Comma's battler as it was an edit from this.

Just a quick bit of advise requested please...

It's something every game maker suffers from.

For me the best cure for that is to play someone else's game. You may end up getting an idea or two, or be inspired to work on your own project.

I suggest visiting this topic on the importance of planning. http://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/4271/

The basic gist is that a decent amount of planning is required. At the very least you should know how many characters you intend to make, how long you intend your game to be, and any custom systems or extra features you plan to implement into it. Doing this early generally prevents you from having more work later on, such as trying to retroactively add something in to your game you suddenly realize it must have halfway through.

Everyone's got their own style though. Personally I just create a main character, develop his personality, and decide what kind of trouble he'll get into with his personality as I work.

Ok, so I'm trying to figure out how to use RPG Maker XP...

In the game editor you'll notice a Materials button. Simply find the appropriate section for the graphics you have drawn and use the Import button to bring it into your game. For most things you'll be prompted to select a transparent color, which will be invisible in your game for that particular graphic. For example if you drew a sprite against a white background, you'd select that background so it would not show up in game.

For more details, push F1 while XP is open to bring up the Help menu. Go under the category RPG Maker XP and click on Material Specifications. This will tell you how large your graphics need to be in order to fit properly and explains a few other things you'll need to know about importing them.

As for the actual drawing part, I recommend using a free program such as Gimp or Graphicsgale. Make sure to save all your graphics as either a JPEG or PNG file.

Help, my game.... It Died :'(

You should check your folder and look for Map.lmu files. At the very least you may be able to recover some data by transferring them into a new project, though as for the database stuff I have no idea where that is stored in rm2k3.
