You know when those things ask you to tick your gender? Not too crazy about those. This is because I am not really a Male. Neither am I a Female. In society, I am a Male and I do identify as one. In the Dominican Republic such a thing happens so often they even have a slang for it - Guevedoche or Machihembras ("male-female"). And the global broad term for it is "intersexed" or "pseudohermaphroditism" and the scientific name for my condition is "5-alpha-reductase deficiency".

I'll explain what 5-alpha-reductase deficiency is. It is a condition in which a a child is born with female characteristics and features but is not a female. They might have something called "ovotestes", which means that they do have ovaries (but not functional) and undescended testicles. The child may appear to have a vagina, but what it would be is just a physical abnormality where the testicles are supposed to descend. So babies born under this condition will be recognized as female and thus may be treated like females. This goes on until puberty, when the "girl" will discover she cannot get her period and upon inspection will discover that yes, she is indeed not a she. I didn't have to wait that long, though. When I was just a little more than year old, a private doctor noted an abnormality in me and decided to do further inspection.

So by the time I was one and a half years old, I was on an operating table. Following that, I had to receive hormonal therapy, which caused my growth to skyrocket. There isn't really much else to say except that my hormones had made me develop a slight case of Gynecomastia and I am unable to grow hair in certain parts of my body (back, buttocks, very sparse chest hair). Concerning its impact on my ability to reproduce, I still can, and it has had no adverse effect on my libido, except raising it a bit due to hormonal on-surges.

Nobody who hasn't read this knows this about me, aside from parents and family. It's not something you tell people. But no doubt there are many out there who recognize my effeteness, which is quite difficult to hide or resist sometimes, because yes, a part of me does identify as female and isn't really ashamed to do so. But then again, I'm not really ashamed of anything. Although I do mostly identify as Male, I just like ticking "Female" sometimes ^_^
