In swedish the word "krysta" is when you push really hard with your diaphragm when either squeezing out a doodie or when squeezing out a baby. Nice looking pic btw ;)

Limitations

Ideas mainly. I can code and make decent maps, and if I need sprites and chipsets I can usually find them online. As for edits, I can make minor ones on my own by pushing pixels around in paint, but I ask others for help with more advanced stuff (and people are nice so I usually get help ^^). So the problem for me is knowing WHAT TO DO; I suck at the whole designing process. Luckily a friend of mine does all the story for me nowadays, and he also makes small map blueprints on paper with notes on little tasks you have to perform in order to beat the map, thus I just go and map it out and code the stuff on it, problem solved. I'm like a mindless working ant or something.. ???

This is usually what happens when I try to make a map without having an idea of what it's gonna look like in advance.

Review of Sore Losers

This is the first game I played because I think it looked cool and it has the same title screen as my game,

and that can only mean success!

Score: 6.5 Pretty decent.
This score might be a bit high in comparison to that of the review on the previous page, but the game made me want to keep playing which is pretty rare for most RM games, and that increases the score a lot. The maps look pretty cool and the music is okay with a slight exception for the battle music: Is there something wrong with the midi synth in my computer, or does it consist solely of drums? A guitar solo starts playing after the drums have gone on for a bit, but I didn't like it very much (and I'm a headbanger so I should know xD j/k).

I didn't get very far in the game because I suck at games (took me 2 months before I could beat the boss in my own game whereas friends have beaten it on the second or third try, that's how much I suck), but the story up until where I am is interesting. Right now I'm supposed to get a teddy bear for this woman or she won't let me jump to that house from her balcony. I guess it's nice with quests, but to my understanding the characters are outlaws so why would they care about this? I should get a choice to walk through her room, and hit her if she refuses to let me. This would also feel more consistent with the rest of the game since I get to choose between things to say in the dialogues.

As far as details and NPCs go I think it's good. NPCs are funny and the message changes when I look down the shitter too many times. As I said, the mapping is pretty good, especially in the cities which is a quality that I admire since a lot of people suck at making them. I would play further but I'm a bit low on time at the moment and I want to try some more games as well, but so far this is a fun game.

Random stuff that could use improvement and that takes the score down:

Graphics don't always feel consistent

Enemies are to boring to fight with the high amount of HP they have

Healing items are a little expensive

When I escape from battle I don't have time to move before the monster touches me again which forces me to re-enter battle mode with a fully healed enemy, THAT IS ANNOYING!!

If the cursor in the todo list is at the top and I press up, it just stands still. It would be cooler if it jumped to the bottom choice and vice versa. Also, the cursor stops between the last option and cancel which is kind of annoying.

When I press "Go to title" in the menu, I don't get an Are You Sure? message which kinda screwd me over cuz I accidentally pressed it a couple of times (that's mainly my fault though :D)

I've removed some bugs from my game, and I'm uploading a new version atm. Still the same link as in the release post (it links to a folder :D). As before, the upload is quite slow so it won't be up for a bit. If you enter the link and see two files, go for the one called "PX_EXTRACT_ALL_FILES_AND_READ_GAME_INFO".
If anyone cares about what I've fixed ^^

I've fixed various small bugs and a couple of game breaking ones, I've also fixed the garbage collection so that unused sprites and backgrounds are now thrown away. Lag can still occur sometimes, but it always disappears with one of the following sollutions:
1. Save the game, turn it off, turn it back on, load the game you saved (always fixes!)
2. Beat the area and move on to the next (fixes it in 95% of cases!)
This is assuming you have played for a while and that you are not in the hotel area, if that area lags it's tough luck, just beat the area; save/reload won't work in it.

I would greatly appreciate feedback on this game, and if the game constantly runs below 30 FPS on your machine plz tell me your spec! I don't know anyone who doesn't run a core2duo so testing and optimizing for slower machines has been kinda hard.


edit: Okay it's up! I also put a 10+ pages long walkthrough in there! A friend just told me that sometimes when the game enters alert mode on the first floor of the HQ, it sometimes leaves alert mode really quickly and no clearing is performed, but this is a bug you should be happy about ^^

There is a ladder at the top of the corridor behind the gate that opens. Interact with it once and it mentions that the ladder goes nowhere, interact with it again and you can knock it over to form a bridge.

I'm playing sore losers and I've been told by Jade to go do the package thing. I've entered the badlands and gone through some broken windows which let me pull a lever so that a gate disappeared, but that does not seem to have helped me at all cuz the gate did not lead anywhere (nice trap actaully ^^). So how do I proceed??


Also, on a whole different note

If you're playing my game and all of a sudden lag appears in an area even though your cpu usage is not high, try saving the game (it actually works I was wrong in the release post it was my computer messing up) and restart it. This will take away unnessecary stuff from the memory and thus remove the lag, it seems my garbage collection that I was so proud of kinda sucked!

Hey thanks for noticing dude! The upload during the night failed, I'm trying to upload it again, but it's kinda stormy weather here (I live on an island atm) so my connection keeps failing me during the upload. If you managed to get anything from that folder it is probably a corrupt archive I'm afraid.. I'll keep trying during the day, the link will still be the same.

edit: IT'S UPLOADEDI noticed some annoying bugs towards the end of the demo btw, so I' not sure you can beat the game, and some maps don't always load their backgrounds when you enter them the second time ^^ but only some! This is the case for the final map of the game so that's why u might not be able to beat it. I'll work on fixing this!

EDIT: I've been informed of some game-breaking bugs and random lag by some friends, others have reported smooth playthroughs though.. I will go through the game and try to fix it on the 25th or 26th^^ and hopefully fix that shit. But I won't do anything tomorrow since it's christmas :D

Once during this evening the game started eating memory for me, if it does this for you tell me, and tell me what you did that made it start doing this (it causes lag!)

Controls:
Move - Cursor keys
Weaponn menu - 2 (hold)
Item menu - 1 (hold)
Shoot/Throw grenade - 3
Mele attack - 4 (push 3 times in a row for a combo!)
Ctrl - Call out to guards, this is fun to use when wearing a uniform, or just to distract them!
Space - Activate stuff, skip cutscenes and com-link conversations!
Delete - save
Space - pick up boxes and drop them (this distracts guards! you can only pick up small boxes!

When climbing:
Up - Up (duh)
left/right - kick left/right

DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS EXCEPT FOR SPACE (IF U WANNA SKIP THAT IS) DURING A CUTSCENE OR A COM-LINK

SEQUENCE! IT WILL SCREW UP THE TIMING BIG TIME!

Filesize rant!

The filesize is quite large for a small game but don't worry, the soundtrack is NOT full of MGS mp3s. The reason for the filesize is that every map is a .png which kind of fills it all up, I aim to code my own map editor in the future that will be able to save maps that GM can open. Also, we have voice acting so that kinda takes up some space as well!




Quality

I wanted the game to be better than it is at the current stage before I released something, but I also always wanted to release something before the end of 2008 so I guess this event will act as a bit of a compromise for me :) The game is 100% playable but, at times, not as polished as I would have wanted to make it.

The music is temporary; we've worked with several composers but they all abandoned the project without even saying something. Therefore I used MGS midis because I did not want to increase the filesize even further just to have MP3s.


Game info

In short, the game is a story driven stealth shooter á Metal Gear Solid (but the game doesn't progress far enough in the demo to reveal a lot of story). Have a look at my game profile for more info! Playtimes will vary based on how good you are at puzzle ish stuff, as some maps are a bit puzzle-ish.


AI bugs

When playing you will notice that the pathfinding is sometimes kind of weird. This is because I'm

using a DLL that is a little bugged (movement costs aren't properly calculated if anyone cares^^) and

GML is too slow to handle pathfinding on its own; I tried it, and it's the reason for the lagging in my second video.
Pathfinding is not only used to move the enemies, they use it to deduce the most probable location of the player based on where he was last seen and the direction he was heading when he disappeared. The same bug makes this calculation go wrong some times!
In future releases I will have coded a pathfinding DLL of my own as a project for programming class in school.


Other known issues

When you exit the hotel the framerate will be considerably lower in that area, I have a couple of guesse as to what is causing this but fixing this is a quite low priority atm since it is only in one area.

Save/Load can be a little buggy! (really sorry about that, it worked last week stopped working today :)


We greatly appreciate constructive criticism on this to improve some stuff in the future :)

We also appreciate reports of bugs that are not VERY OBVIOUS.

Also, a note of caution: Try to avoid navigating into narrow spaces, getting out can prove hard!

Last: If something is too hard, ask me what to do in PM or in the discussion thread, if alot of people seem to have problems I will write walkthroughs..
