Five Strategies for Better Game-Making

This is good stuff. I wish I saw more people adhere to number 1, characterization is so important for any kind of successful story-driven project.

I struggle with number 2 sometimes - I tend to write a lot of less-than-crucial conversations between characters mostly to develop them a little at a time. I can get carried away with the backstory, too. I do hope I've never written anything as vague and pointless as those Xenogears guys, though.

MotW's not done. It's a long game released in chapters that each amount to about 4-5 hours of playtime. Each one is a semi-contained story arc, so sometimes you get people describing them as complete games, but they're not really. We've been averaging about one "arc" a year. Six of seven are released, the most recent was in August 2009.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Karsuman.

Also, FG:

As for the games themselves, I have never actually played any of them so I can't offer an opinion.

This comment amuses me greatly, given our past differences. We're actually putting some tweaks on the older arcs at the moment, and many of the ideas for improvements came from reviews we've gotten on this site (yes, even yours, FG), so thank you all for that.

Edit: I can edit! At last! Well played, sirs!

Educated Choice Awards 2008

Thank you to the organizers of this for your kind words about MotW. I think some of these games represent the best the RM scene currently has to offer, so I'm humbled to be included amongst them.

"Why the hell are VX/XP users so protectionist about people who use 2K(3) disliking VX/XP games; it is almost as if they think all 2K(3) users are incapable of liking anything not made with 2K(3). It's retarded."

Because this is a persistent attitude you find within the RM community. You're right to say that not all RM2K/3 users feel that way, but I'm not sure Karsuman necessarily meant that. Still, several people have openly admitted to me or friends of mine that they ignore all RMXP/VX games just as a rule. Personally, I adored RM2K, and held onto it even when RM2k3 came out. But when XP emerged, ArtBane and I felt it offered us more possibilities for our next project.
