Is Hero's Realm worth remaking commercially?
author=kentona
but worrying about failing is my thing
if I wasn't worried I wouldn't have made this blog post.
This is probably what made my IGMC entry this year so terrible. It's what then lead me to stopping Hanging On which actually had people interested in it. It's what has really stopped me from doing any REAL work on games since June. You just have to shove that aside and not let it hold you back like it's grabbed me and I'm sure some others on here.
You have a very strong base and I think you can really do it if you put your mind to it and I'm sure this whole site will back you up 100% of the way (unless we're going to be adding microtransactions, then we'd exile you as head of the site sorry :/) While I don't think Hero's Realm is generic I think the RPG genre needs something generic every once in awhile.
I think before you think it's going to fail right away decide if YOU want to do this and get started on organizing your thoughts towards the (as I said before) 20 mins of the game and let's see where it gets. From there if that comes out well and gets good feedback take kickstarter in to consideration.

For Kickstarter I'd say before you start you need to have like the first 20 mins of gameplay working fully playable in the new version of the game, this means graphics, music, etc. As well as maybe some noticeable scenes from the game to add in the overall kickstarter video.
I would not develop the game for mobile as the main platform though and keep that as a extra if you still wanted to. It would be a decent idea though to have a 30 hour ACTUAL rpg on mobile on the go.
As for piracy. It's gonna happen. One way or another but I'm sure you can be smarter then most rpg maker games on steam that don't try to encrypt their games past the easily passable rgss encryption file.
Distribution, Steam Greenlight would be decent and considering we got up to 71% on shattered before we ran out of votes I'm sure Hero's Realm could make it. Additionally itch.io and humble are also options.

This was cute and fun, somethings were a little tricky to figure out but other then that I enjoyed it! Maybe you can have Richard hint about trading for a placemat if you don't have it yet?

As for losing much I keep most of my actually important stuff on Dropbox but I did lose some recent game stuff which blows.
Still need to redownload my 200gbs worth of programs and stuff though which is a pain in the ass (autodesk stuff especially)
