Has anyone figured out how to doa Tactics game in RPG Maker?

The world really needs more SRPGs.
I particularly would like to see much more games that play like Shining Force with RPG gameplay in between the battles (exploring towns, finding hidden passage and treasures)
The Advance versions of FFT were massive disappointments imo especially when compared to the original...classes became limited by race, judegs randomly cut off certain abilities, the art style and tone went from super in-depth and serious to quirky and kiddish (their doing the same with the DS FF remakes their all that annoying chibi style now.

Anyways I DO plan to have towns be walkable, I never liked the "Menu towns" not sure if I'm doing dungeons though...the world map may or may not be free roam...I'd really rather it wasn't mostly for SRPG nostalgia reasons.
The main issue with mixing dungeons and SRPG battles is that battles in a SRPG take WAY longer than standard RPG fights so dungeons would likely only have a few scripted encounters...maybe I could make puzzle dungeons with only the "Boss" causing an encounter.
Thanks for all the help so far guys I've gotten quite a few of the scripts I was looking for so far, I didn't actually expect so much response but still got at least one must have one left
1. A way to allow players to add custom "Generic" characters to the party to mix and match with pre-made "Heros" (customization would be simple..choose a starting class possibly allow a few cosmetic and stat choices...not really required though) heh too bad I can't just put the CHaracter Generator from RPGMakerVXAce in game its pretty cool way to make facesets and sprite sets
As for the tactical RPG Battle Script - Currently I'm looking at GTBS V2.4 and it looks promising but will take some testing...Hoping to integrate Layy Meta Engine for the isometric view. Feel free to keep hunting down other RGSS3 or RPGMakerVX Tactics Systems though as I'm open to trying anything.
There's also my minor thingss I'd like to do...these are all optional and I'd have no issue making the game w/o and and will also be done last if I even have time but I really would like to include them.
1. A way to have the characters move along a path from important location to important location on the world map instead of free-roam
2. A crafting system (I LOVE crafting systems so I'd like to try to include one)
3. A Bestiary
4. A Records book (ie. Time played, total monsters killed, highest damage, highest money,etc.)
5. A Tutorial section (In case anyone hasn't played an SRPG before I'd like to outline the basics) selectable from the in-game menu...most likely just a bunch of text explanations but if I have extra time I might script some visual aids.

Probably not quite the way you envision it, but I'm sure he'd willing to help you with your X-mas wish. BTW, not to scare you, fl, but you've got just over 11 weeks to get it done.

Anyone know a good place to ger faceset, chipsets,etc. I'm ok at sprites but everything else is beyond my capabilities

I am glad that there's some activity on the Tactical gamefront. I got hooked to it from playing the Shining Force and many of the games made by Spiderweb Software games, which have some RPG elements to them. It is a highly overlooked genre. The most representative game hosted by RMN is Aurora Wing, so yeah, it is quite possible. Good luck getting resources for your project, failedlegend!

Oh and to everyone I forgot to mention If I can pull this off I'm going to be giving this to my friends as an X-Mas gift (which X-Mas is the question :P) and each will have themselves (or an avatar of some sort that represents them) as the moan character but If they do like it when I post it on here their names will be changed for their privacy and the main character will be changed for a wider audience (and will have key scenes changed to make sense and develop his character)

Oh cool is that his homepage or just a news site cause I've been trying to find the most up to date version to test with (this one is the most recent thanks)
Real bummer Yanfly hasn't made that script public the class selection is VERY similar to FFT class select, oh well I don't blame him for keeping some of his tricks for himself :P

I will definitely look into RPGToolkit when I get a sec but I'm hoping to get it to work in RPG Maker as I actually have a general knowledge of how that line of game creators work whereas I'd be starting from complete scratch with RPGToolkit.

Apart from the fact that PS1 FF Tactics is a 3D area and so rotatable everything is possible in RPGToolkit,

Seems to me to get what I need I'll probably need to track down several different scripts
1. A Tactics Battle System,
2. A way to change classes...preferably some sort of tiered system with special requirements like X level knight + X level priest to become a paladin
3. A custom map script that allows movement from important location to important location instead of open movement (I actually prefer open movement in RPGs but if I could find this..it would "feel" right for a tactics game..although towns I'll likely have players be able to walk around like normal)
4. A custom equipment system (this ones optional)
5. A crafting system would be nice :D but this is also optional
6. The ability to have more than 4 party members and to swap out which characters you currently have in your party.
7. A way to allow players to add custom "Generic" characters to the party to mix and match with pre-made "Heros" (customization would be simple..choose a sprite/face and starting class...maybe some stat choices..I dunno)
Oh I wish I knew how to code.
Anyways in case people don't know what I mean when I say "Tactics" game I'll try to explain
Combat is turn based, done on a grid-based battlefield...think chess but usually with a much bigger board and varying terrain heights and types. It also very similar to DnD or Warhammer combat in that respect.
The main attraction of this is ALOT of customization everyones "Army" should look different even if they have the exact same class line-up, its also great for Cameos (if I decide this game is worth it I might make a few requests for my fav RMN games) and weird classes (ie. The Calculator :D)
IMO FFT on PSX/PSP is the #1 Tactics game out there..I mean Fire emblem, Advance Wars and FFT Sequels are nice but FFT was just the perfect blend of everything (I like the mix of generic and heroics in stead of JUST generics or JUST hero characters)

Note: I DO NOT expect to match the graphical capabilities of the PSX :P Especially since there's no way I could makes sprites that good.
