Balance, balance balance!
I am not very good at balance. I am one of those lame mappers who makes nice maps but you can't explore them. But when testing my game, I have found that it is not very fun as most of the paths are very linier and there is not much in terms of exploration, something I am working on.
It is not easy (at least for me) to find a good balance, but I think it is key to making good maps.
Also all of the above is subjective, and depends on your game. Some games work better with simpler maps (i.e Pokemon)

Floating Island Chipset
You can always find a chipset you like, then edit the bottom of the cliffs by taking out the grass to make it look like it is floating.
I don't think you can really find a 'floating island' chipset anywhere though.

Something Out of My League
Well, you could try and get around the coding.
Just use the background for a DBS battle your map (take a picture of it, then place it)
Then set the battle transitions to No Transitions.
It may not be fancy or what you want exactly, but its a suggestion.

Gimme Boss Gimmicks
Instead of morphing halfway through the battle, my favorites are the ones the transform after the battle.
So you go through this really tough battle and are almost dead, and with no chance to heal or recollect you are helplessly tossed into another terribly hard battle with all of your health and stats the same as before.
Golden Sun is guilty of that.

Last I heard, it's not cool to be cool anymore.
Favorite game? I am too indecisive, but like Neophyte said most SNES RPGs (Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Zelda LttP), Super Metroid, Ocarina of Time, etc. Can't really decide.
